  • Did you know there are many grades of rosin, from violin to cello and double bass? There's nothing exact about Rosin, and yet after a while we get a feel for how much to use that's just right for our sound, and we learn how to keep our violins and bows in tip top condition with all that rosin dust flying around...Mary

      Hello!
      It was my very first teacher at school many decades ago who not only kept sugar cubes in his violin case to fix the endlessly greasy spots on our little bows, but a mint yoyo (a delicious little chocolate mint wrapped biscuit) which we all got at the end of every lesson!
      I'm carrying on his tradition now with my 6 year old piano pupil who gets a Tunnock's Teacake (a Scottish treat) at the end of his lesson - he loves it! 😄Mary💗

    Hola Mary! 💜🎶💜🎻

      Hello Lola! Isn't it amazing what we can find out that's new? Last time I had a bow rehair, they told me my bow stick was caked with years of rosin, so they carefully scraped it off, and my goodness, the bow has become revived, flexible and easy to play off the string. Of course, now I realise what a difference simply wiping the bow at the end of the day makes to the bow - so simple, ha ha!
      And yes, you're right, our instruments have the power to bring us joy - most of the time, but I wouldn't change it for the world, would you?
      Take care Lola! Mary💗

    Sorry Mary,what cloth do you use for the bow hair again?

    • @violinstudiowithmaryv
      @violinstudiowithmaryv  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's a piece of cotton fabric (mine is a cut up old shirt) for the hair and a microfibre cloth for the stick.
      Thanks for watching John. Mary💗

    Thank you Mary. I like the secret of the sugar cubes but here are very expensive!!! 😅 All is very expensive here 😢 now...

      Hello Marta! Yes, and sugar is one of those staples in our kitchen cupboard that we tend to take for granted.
      In fact a lot of essential things for the violin are very expensive; strings, bow rehairs and repairs by luthiers to name a few...
      So there are many reasons to look after our instruments very carefully! 🙂Mary 💗

    Hi Mary, I notice on Amazon the dark Melo rosin looks darker than the Melo dark you are using.

    Hi Mary, thanks for this very informative video. I have for years been using a wine cork to clean rosin off the strings after playing. And then follow this with a micro cloth. I am now wondering if the cork may be too rough, although I have not had any issues with the string unraveling. Any thoughts. John

    • @violinstudiowithmaryv
      @violinstudiowithmaryv  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hello John! Well, this is a new one for me - I've not heard of using cork on the strings! Does your method of cork then micro cloth actually work well?
      It seems strange to me to use a 'hard' surface like cork on our (expensive) strings. Fingernails that are too long will wear strings out very quickly...the outer wrapping starts to widen and become loose. You can clearly see the wrapping covering the string where it's stretched over the bridge.
      The Heifitz spit and cloth method not only applies but also removes any acid from spit on the strings, which is a great benefit, I think.
      But John, all I can say is it's a corker of a good idea to follow in the footsteps of Heifitz in any way we can! 😀Mary 💗

      Mary, I got the cork technique somewhere on line, and yes it works quite well. All you do is break the cork in half so the edge you put on the string is rougher than the smooth edge of a cork. The side benefit of this technique is you always have a ready reason to buy a new bottle of wine. But I like the spit approach as I have found that spit can clean just about anything. Cheers John

    I have to wonder who the first person was to look at a sugar cube and think that might make a handy bow hair cleaner.
