👏 I’m always appreciative of your practical, real-world advice on these things, especially when speaking to beginners. Like many of us, I started by following a lot of ‘TH-cam Pros’. They were amazing for the start of my cinematography journey but, at some point, I moved past the level of ‘noise’ that I used to consume. As a working professional I lamented the lack of practical advice out here. I’m in pre-production of my first documentary and your advice (and tone) has been crucial in helping me tell their story. Thanks for all that you do. Thank you for providing real-world experience with a healthy dose of encouragement. You probably don’t realize the impact you’re having but I can safely say it’s a tremendous one. 💪🏼
Wow, thank you for saying this. I'm so happy to hear that my videos here are making a positive impact :) Good luck on your first documentary! You got this
Great simple advice. I started out shooting reversal film stock which is had around a 6 stop or so dynamic range. You had to nail that exposure and get in camera and I still practice that in digital.
Amazing! thank you :) I am a beginner, so its so nice to know that there is so much information out there and people like you Austin willing share your tips and tricks from your profession:)
Great advice! Now that I am retired, I have dreamed of making a documentary. I have found a great story but have struggled with where to start with the cinematography. I didnt want shoot hours of video and then be unhappy with the look. Now I feel like I know where to start. Thanks!
Facts!!! You don't even need to have a LUT in camera, because you should be using your exposure tools. People that sell LUTs are the biggest scammers! So many things affect colours. You need to learn how to have a good eye for how it should look. The best and only way to grade accurate colours, is to put a swatch card in the picture and then match it to the card in post. Then you have accurate colours for that screen. No LUT is a magic fix!!! Very few people say use a swatch card, because they want to sell you a shortcut LUT, that actually doesn't work. Thanks for the truth! ❤
Same, have used the A7SIII since 2021 and still haven’t upgraded! Heck of a camera! Even when the new version/FX3II comes out, I’m keeping this thing around. Probably my favorite camera I’ve ever owned!
Agree on overcomplicating things - I also believe it's possible for beginners to get good results with modest equipment with a bit of smart planning and good narrative. It's almost always impossible for non-professionals to have enough capital to get all the equipment you need over night.
@@austinmeyerfilms It's too funny-you respond faster here than on LinkedIn. LOL. You are probably one of the coolest, most collected documentary film folks I have watched. You are so down to earth. I appreciate you sharing these tips so much!
About the 'learn to trust your eyes' in exposure segment.. Only do that if you use a great monitor or viewfinder. Even then, visibility and colors can be an issue depending the environmental lighting. That's why computer monitors need to be color calibrated with environmental lighting measurement. Waveforms, false color etc. now become very useful. And let's not speak about most built-in camera lcd screens.
I appreciate your opinion, but I just disagree with it. People have been creating amazing images for many decades with terrible monitors, viewfinders, and computers. If people practice enough with whatever equipment they have, and understand how what they are looking at on their monitor relates to the final exported image, they can learn to trust their eyes
Phantom LUTs all day. Neutral to be specific. I also apply the neutral phantom LUT to the camera monitor and my external monitor so false colors line up according to the LUT. Sometimes I’ll bake in the phantom LUT for quick turnaround projects.
Hi Austin, you have summarized thousands of "questionable" TH-cam videos about technique in just under 10 minutes in a perfect way. Almost everyone talks about absurd color corrections but says that 80% do not do white balance 🤬🤬🤬. Absurd!!! The pearl of the week is at min 11.30 approx. A concept that should be tattooed on their arm. 😝😏Learn the basics of technique, but then think about the story and the management of situations. We do not have to sell equipment but create stories that work and tell. A big greeting from Italy
6:03 i really new to all this the few times I've tried the opposite seems to be true especially if i try to raise the shadows im wondering what i might be doing wrong
That's a great question. I have never used the FX30, so I am not exactly sure. I'd definitely try to find some resources (on youtube or otherwise) that speak specifically to your camera's functionality. Let me know what you find out!

Love that! I would have zero clue what I was doing if I was shooting reversal film stock 😂 I’m spoiled
The most crucial technique in documentary filmmaking is not cinematography, it's building a solid and genuine relationship with the protagonist.
Straight fire! 🔥 Thanks again, Austin!
Thanks, Anthony!
The L cut @ 5:44 into the Davinci Resolve interface was so clean 🔥

That’s a solid strategy. I gotta say, I’m a Tungsten Phantom LUT kinda guy 🎨
@ you Tungsten people.. 🤓

Good advice! I shoot with an FX30 and in order to shoot whit s-log don't have picture profile option and "flexible iso" needs to be on, right?
