Melons can be a difficult fruit to know when to harvest. That includes the Honeydew. I have found there are a few clues to help you know when your honeydew melons are perfectly ripe and ready to harvest from the vine.

You have to be careful when selecting a honeydew melon because many of them are picked too soon. Joe Carcione in his book The Greengrocer advises: "There's nothing better than a fully ripe honeydew but it takes some skill to choose one. First look for color, creamy white or creamy yellow. Rind that's dead-white or has a greenish tinge indicates a melon that was picked too soon. Don't you pick it, either. Next, feel the skin for 'bloom.' A good one will have a soft and velvety feel, slightly sticky or oily. One that feels like a billiard ball -- smooth, hard and shiny -- was picked too soon. A little give to the rind indicates ripeness."
I think that one was far too green. Honeydew has some crunch to it, but not that much.

This was not a ripe melon. When you cut a ripe melon, the knife should slide right through.

It was still green. Wait for it to turn yellowish. Lost a lot of sweetness harvesting it early. Just like she said, culd have stayed on the plant a few more days. Would have made a big difference.

Great video I am actually doing some research so that I can hopefully pick some of my melons today! I have watermelon honey dew and cantaloupe and although there are several of each fruit I am hesitant to pluck one lol. This gave me some confidence thank you ladies! Also I LOVE y'all ladies pioneer woman cutting board, I adore her kitchen supplies 🤍🤍

Good luck picking ripe melons that are wonderfully flavorful. Yes, I (Emmaline) love all things Pioneer Woman. I have tons of her kitchen wares that we use in the videos and even more in my kitchen. We film at Marie's so you only see what I drag over to her house, but if you have a walk through my kitchen you would see the plates, bowels, utensils and holder, butter dish, cookbook stand, towel rack ... and TONS more. I love the cheerfulness of all the flowers.

I used the video to harvest a melon. The melon was far from ready. I should have known from the crunch sound I heard in the video and how they couldn’t cut through it because it wasn’t ripe.😂

I usely go by smell. It will put off a sweet smell and soft when I'm at the grocery store. Don't know how to grow them but bet it tastes good. Hi from Lutz Florida USA
