    The only 100% sure fire way to know if a watermelon is ripe. Reach up with one finger and see if you can snap off the vine. The tendril is a good indicator but they can turn brown before the watermelon is ripe. If you test the actual vine for dryness by seeing if it will snap off is the only real way to know if the melon is no long receiving nutrients. Trust me. You should never have to cut a watermelon vine.

    • @SimplisticFarms
      @SimplisticFarms  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I suppose it's contextual like everything else. Variety could possibly be a factor. I know that the ones I let go until the stems were to that point were actually Over ripe for my liking. That could come down to personal preference as well. Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel!🤙

      Could you explain a little bit more what you mean by "snap off" exactly? How would you actually test for it?

    • @ricsgarden7394
      @ricsgarden7394 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@siOu666 I dont know what more to tell you. Reach down with a finger and the stem will pop loose from the melon if it is ripe. If it doesnt pop loose its not ripe. Lots of people guess and cut the stem. You should never have to cut a melon loose.
      The "test" is if it doesnt pop right off. If you cant do it pretty easily with ONE finger then its not ready. Try a few and you will learn the amount of pressure needed.

      @siOu666 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ricsgarden7394 thanks a lot. Hope I will get enough opportunities to test your method this season. Those tendril / browning leaf methods have proven to be not too reliable. Your method is also independent of variety?

    Beautiful! I'm growing sugar baby watermelons on a trellis as well. My question is about them hanging that way. I noticed that some are hammocked but most are not. How heavy do they have to be before you hammock them? Mine that are growing now aren't nearly as big as those and I have them in hammocks. LOL I had no idea the vines were that strong.

      You can use trap crops, use a bt spray or use surround kaolin clay. They’re all natural and can be eaten but still, rinse off when youre about to eat. The clay has to be surround, not regular clay. Surround is much finer and is made finer by a machine so you can’t achieve the same fineness at home. The bt is just regular bacteria found in dirt and compost. I the bt spray definitely doesn’t effect pollinators but I think the clay may kill them because it gums up.
