This is some of the most amazing art I've ever seen. Your workflow, your commentary, and especially your finished products...I am speechless. THANK YOU for posting this.
Your chanel is probably the best of this kind on youtube. It's rare for a person at your level of talent and dedication would spare time to do these free vdos which help thousands of people learned to improve on their skill. Thank you very much. You are very kind.
Im a self taught graphic artist who works full time in a factory. up until i found these videos i was struggling but ive learned so since and i just wanted to say youre awesome !
Hey buddy :) Feng has actually mentioned in some of his videos that he deliberately leaves out a lot of the vital information. He does this because if he were to teach us everything in these videos there would be less reason for people to want to attend his classes. Don't take his words for granted. It's amazing that he's shown us as many videos/tips that he has especially considering how busy I'm sure he is. I've been an artist my entire life and I'm still learning so much from them. Cheers!
Well worth the wait. The information you cover about the industry, your own workflow, and gaming perspective is gold. Thank you again for the AAA tutorial.
I have been watching all the episodes since last year and it gave me whole new direction to my career, after all these awesome tutorials I have gained so much knowledge on perspective, design language, color value lighting, time management and what not. Before I saw these video I was into animation and flim making course but now I have just dropped the Idea of becoming an animator and looking for a job as an concept artist..thanks feng for sharing your treasure...thanks
@wolfengheist Please refer to the Program Fees menu on our website for course fees information. Also, feel free to email us at contact(at)fzdschool(dot)com for additional information. Thanks!
As a total neophyte on digital-painting, I'm always flabbergasted when I look at your work... I'm 22 and I feel like it's too late for me to reach that level. But your videos are greatly helpful, and I thank you so much for that. Keep up the good job !!
i'm a game design student studying in Sydney. My friends and i absolutely admire you. And of course, thank you Feng Zhu for so many terrific videos you've given us!!
It's not the snow specifically, it's the fact that it would be really cold there and that adds to the feeling that you don't want to be out there. Snow can be used to make things look magical or cozy as well it's just adding to the feeling that is already there.
This is awesome and yet very instructive. I like when artist talk over painting even if prerecorded, help knowing what's going on and getting an overall grasps about the project :) I could watch this all day long.
Mate, you never have to be sorry for long wait between updates. this stuff is free and some of the best out there so we are happy to wait and get these whenever you get time. This is a great one. Cheers.
You can /start/ drawing at any age! I know people who went to school for art who didn't decide to start until after community college! Their skill may not as refined as someone who's been drawing forever, but the talent is still there. Skill can be learned!
Before you added the spikes, the warm colors contrasting to the snow made that seem like a friendly place to me, not an evil one. I mean, if you're in a snowy wasteland and you crest a hill to see a warm red/orange fortress, it'd look like a respite from the cold.
TBH this video itself has already inspired me to try to achieve such paintings and i think that his voice helps in a sense that it lets me know more about the gaming industry and helps me think about whether i am interested in joining the industry. Learned tons from watching. Cheers!
Your workflow reminds me of the the talk "John Cleese On Productivity." He talks about setting aside space (clear distractions), time (allocate time in advance), time (don't stop once you got your first idea, finish the allocated time), and humor (don't take yourself too seriously).
I study electrotechnical engineering university, thou I like what I am learning and what will provide for me in future. I enjoy this kind of videos and want to be more into this. I started leaning and I try watching this videos to learn more and develop in this field. I don`t have much time, but I would like to go more in learning this I love digital painting and design. This is so much help. Thou I didn`t watch all of them, when I have time I will watch all o them they seem amazing.
I have heard both phrases being used for different things. Whenever we want to dish out as many ideas as possible we use "Flush", which is mostly just getting the ideas and designs out of the way. Whenever we want to build the idea up with details we "Flesh" it out.
Hey Feng, I'm currently an Australian student at school and I am determined to get into the conceptual design business. I absolutely love your work and I am sure everyone else does as well. I would like to say a big thanks for being one of my inspirations.
Each drawing takes him something between 20 and 30, or 40 minutes. They aren't entirely finished by then, but everything he does afterwards is just some finetuning. He's incredibly fast.
I have a whole palette set that was made using the collage-palette technique he talked about in episode 8: Skull Village. It's easiest if you can take the pics yourself. I used my camera to take RAW images, so it worked out very well. Then I just recorded any colours I really liked while I was sampling from it.
Feng I would love it if you talked about lifestyle and health, how to keep yourself focused for 8 hours a day with enough consistency to be able to work full time freelance. For example details about diet and exercise, daily routine, ensuring you sleep well and wake up well rested. How to avoid overworking but still maximizing productivity? What to do when you're simply too unfocused and tired to work? How do you avoid that in the first place? How do you guarantee consistent motivation to work?
I'm not saying it's meaningless to know about clients, it's totally worth it. It's just that it's really impossible to take in all this information about the industry at the same time as learning the painting aspects.
The visual library is learned differently for everyone. I learn from drawing from reference a few times, others get it from looking at lots of things and they can draw it later (wish I could do that). How did you gain your visual library?
Hi! Currently our school does not offer any online courses as practical and in-class assignments are required. We believe that one-on-one communication and guidance is the huge part of succeeding in our program. Please refer to the FAQ page on our website for more information. Thanks!
Feng, thanks again for a great video. The best thing of your videos is that you not only talk us about technique and different ways for painting, you talk us about design. And there aren´t too much guys talking about this on the web. I have a little question about this video: Do you think that this paintings you´ve showed us are enough detailed to include them in a portfolio, or they would need more detail and refining for that ? Thank you !!
FZD School welcomes any aspiring designer regardless of their background. All we really look for in a potential student is the strong interest in design, drawing, and the motivation to succeed. It helps to have some drawing capabilities, but it is not an entrance requirement at our school. The goal of the entrance portfolio is to show your interest in design. This can be in the form of sketches or drawings. We are looking for your problem solving abilities and “thinking on paper” skills.
The career would be "concept artist" - you can either be freelance or work in a studio. And which skills/courses would you focus on? Well - industrial design, general drawing, color, composition, painting. - You should watch some of F. Zhu's other videos - there's one specifically on the difference between conceptartist/entertainment design and illustration - and which skillsets to go for
Click the image tab up the top, go to 'rotate canvas' (might be called something depending on what version of photoshop you have) and then click 'flip horizontal' you can set a key to do this for you by using actions, just search for a tutorial on "how to create a flip canvas hotkey in photoshop"
I learn from colouring in monochromatic style, say using variations of red or blue to understand the variations of tone and then continue to translate that into multiple colours and start thinking about how different lights create different colours and then think about material
Feng zhu talks about alot of the time just working on one layer. For landscapes it works amazingly. If you plan on character design usually the more layers the better.
I see a lot of artists who share their brushes claim that they use the normal round brushes the most o_O But then I see all the texture work in their art and it's like amazing.
Regarding health, I try to work only from 10am to 6:30pm. After work, I usually go for a 4km run with my dog by the beach, followed by a 30 min workout. That'll relax your eyes as well and keep you healthy. Avoid fast food and junk food - they'll put you right to sleep. Our industry in general is not very good for your health. There are a lot of coffee, stress, pressure, etc. involved. So you'll need to balance your life with other activities. For me it's gym, my family and travelling. :)
15:30 i agree with energy and self standards and finding that balance, glad to see I am on the right track. Breaks and recharging the brain is a good thing !
Love your work man! and your videos are fun and helpful. id like to hear some time your thought process.. or i guess your design thought process explained. like what goes through you head before each brush stroke and how you decide what content goes where. for example, when you scribble down a blob of color, what, in your mind, determines if its a rock or a tree. it'd be nice to just hear your inner monologue as your painting to see whats intentional and what is happy accident. thanks!
The thing about colors is that it's a huge subject which you can't really cover in a single youtube video. I study design and we had a whole term just about colors, and we only covered the basics. If you are having problems there are some great books on the subject which explain the theory pretty nicely and you can study them in your own time. Peace!
Wu-Yi mountains where they grow tea! I think that's what you were talking about in China around 19:20! Also yours a godsend for my inspiration and I love how you work you're a natural creative and an amazing person for making this information public! Thank you. You may have changed my life hahaha. Your content being real time and descriptive makes me immediately active and inspired.
For the image you scraped, I think that if you changed the light blue back ground color to a darker purple/midnight tone it could have been great. Could have added some dark storm clouds in there. I was getting the evil lair vibes from the structure, but the environment wasn't matching.
Hey there Feng, Like many others i like the videos quite a lot. Ive seen the videos with graduates aswell. Of course showing off their final works is nice but wouldn't it be an idea to have a video with works from 1 person from before, during and after the whole course? Like they say, showing progress is more important then the final products. I'd love to see how someone grows better during the course to see how much someone actually gets better. Cheers!
oh god i was so shocked when you deleted the fourth one...i actually loved it....this calm atmosphere...there it becomes once again very clear that every art is also a matter of taste :D Love your videos by the way..they help me alot as an upcoming Gamedesigner
He said he uses pretty much the photoshop defaults. Otherwise look up an artist's site by the name of Geoffroy Thoorens, or djahaL. In his goodies tab at the top, there's some great brushes that I saw FZD using in this video.
hello,I'm kheopsyco from belgium.I try to learn alone color painting with my new tablet but i was stuck with the colors and luminosity difficulties. Thanks for your work and thanks for this video because it gave me the keys to understand and solves these difficulties ! thanks thanks thanks
Really awesome video! Love how rough, yet detailed you were able to make all of these pieces! Definitely will be using these to study when I'm working on my own work!
basic knowledge is always the greatest wall, after u climbed that all becomes easier, funnier, more enjoyable and the learning curve turns exponential (and when u are near of perfection every step returns to "so hard" again, but with a better disposition and self-esteem ) ,,, and it is applicable for any thing u try in ur life. ----i hope its was understandable im on the first wall speaking english;)
As Feng has said in many of his previous videos, he uses the default Photoshop brushes, specifically the chalk brush and the soft and hard round brushes.
Thanks Feng! i've watched all the video's and they have inspired me greatly! i'm thinking about joining your 1 year course in 2 years! hoping to see you then ;)
Great as usual. At 11:32 you are talking about color palettes, maybe you could make video about colors? making swatches/color palettes; colors of morning/day/evening/night in one scene etc? I've got problems with colors. :/ Thumb up if you like the idea, guys.
the right way: watch this, feel *pumped*, open photoshop, draw *awesome box, start again, draw *equally awesome triangle*, start again, *draw equally awesome cylinder*, continues until comfortable with perspective and shading. this step takes up several years of your life. just drawing basic shapes. then try drawing something and failing horribly.only after years of drawing crap with a few gold nuggets do you reach the motherload. you are now 30 years older and have grown a beard. well done.
I would say not to worry about what hes doing right now its best we learn from what hes doing. He has a set in his brain already which makes him draw faster than we could. We have to build these same building blocks that he does. If your doing this alone it will take some time or maybe you will see what I see. Hes right about fundamentals
that's the question I've been wanted to ask, too. as a illustrator who just started my career, I have to sit in front of the computer and paint all day. just recently I started to have little bit of health problem, such as back pain, and I'm only 22, I just can't imagine how it's going to be when I'm 30.
You job is amazing, I really am stunned by your skill. Seeing what you can get to in only 20min, really professional also, One more fan. (Very inspiring for my own work btw) Like and Subscribed well diserved.
I think the older that you are, say, at least in your mid to late 20s or older, and the harder you try to catch up to someone like Feng, the more you're going to feel yourself drowning in anxiety, but really ONLY if you took many years off from drawing or are just beginning. Make whatever time you have to practice really count, even if it's only for an hour, and try to balance out time for your 'mileage drawing' and more finished pieces that require more time. Hope that helps.
This question isn't really directed towards Feng but rather to any experienced artist. Feng always talks about learning the fundamentals of drawing and I wanted to know what those fundamentals where exactly so I could focus my studies more. Thanks.
yeah man this is a different side to the art industry, this is design, its like feng says in his other videos, what we are ding here is not art, we are not painting a fancy picture to be sold and made money on, its the game or film thats making the money thus meaning what you are doing is designing, and the designs you do are not simply thrown away, they are used in the production stages and made into enviroment or characters, what your thinking about is fine art and painting where the artist..
For that first one you deleted... My thought later into that was "Abandoned fortress at a mid range altitude that has now been inhabited by something else." It could also look sort of benign on the outside, but then you could do an inside shot and it might be hiding some sort of hideous monster.
The FZD Design Cinema Contest deadline is approaching soon. Be sure to submit your entry by September 30, 2013 to win a trip to Singapore. Good luck to you all~~
Hey Feng again awesome video! Could you please put some fundamental stuffs sometimes, like basic of lighting , mood , colors and those kind of stuffs, I would really like to hear you talk on those topics! I don't have the funds to visit art school so learning some really simple things from you would mean a lot to me and many other people.
I'm just starting, what's the best way to get better? Do you just keep doodling, or should I remember to practice a certain way in order not to develop poor habits? This questions to anyone as well, and I mainly want to focus on buildings as opposed to landscapes if that helps anyone ;s
Hi Feng... Awesome video as always. I've been learning a lot from your videos, it's very helpful to everyone who wants to be part of the industry. I would like to ask if you have some tips on coloring because I'm not very good that those parts... Thanks so much for making all these videos all this time... Keep being awesome!
The painting part's the easy part on here, it's his creativity that makes him a god tier artist.
10/10
The painting is not easy, painting is like rocket science and his creativity is that, times infinity and then taken to the depth of forever, level...
@Vincent Eagle, Agreed
I'm consistently amazed by Feng's ability to generate ideas on the fly... incredible skill. Thank you so much Feng!
Love your tuts bro
Comes with experience
The way he builds his forms and establishes the scene so quickly always blows my mind.
You're a monster, dude. A MONSTER.

This is literally one of my favorite art videos on youtube so far!
As a total neophyte on digital-painting, I'm always flabbergasted when I look at your work...
I'm 22 and I feel like it's too late for me to reach that level.
But your videos are greatly helpful, and I thank you so much for that.

I appreciate your generosity in doing these vids, Feng. As always, this one was also super helpful!
There are artists that use dirt and sand as mediums and create the most beautiful work you could imagine.
You can /start/ drawing at any age! I know people who went to school for art who didn't decide to start until after community college! Their skill may not as refined as someone who's been drawing forever, but the talent is still there. Skill can be learned!
Woot finally another great video. You have no idea how much these help Feng. Such awesome work!

Because it is simple. We are mere babies though, so we don't understand yet.
man, you babies must have improved a lot since 3 years ago, hows the progress coming?
what about a year from then?

I have a whole palette set that was made using the collage-palette technique he talked about in episode 8: Skull Village.

Great Stuff And Good Information On How The Industry Works. Your Art Work Is Awesome.
FENG!!! I MISSED YOU AND YOUR LESSONS!!! Thank you so much for your channel it helps me out a lot!
I actually find the business and industry part very interesting...since he's about the only person out there mentioning it
Animal studies help greatly with creature design. Mix and match those features!
Thanks Feng! i've watched all the video's and they have inspired me greatly! i'm thinking about joining your 1 year course in 2 years! hoping to see you then ;)
I think the .psd examples he's talking about would have been on the ImagineFX cd; this video was originally for that magazine.
Great as usual.
At 11:32 you are talking about color palettes, maybe you could make video about colors? making swatches/color palettes; colors of morning/day/evening/night in one scene etc? I've got problems with colors. :/
Thumb up if you like the idea, guys.
Almost Haloween of 2017, time to rewatch all the old vids + the new ones :D
the right way: watch this, feel *pumped*, open photoshop, draw *awesome box, start again, draw *equally awesome triangle*, start again, *draw equally awesome cylinder*, continues until comfortable with perspective and shading. this step takes up several years of your life. just drawing basic shapes. then try drawing something and failing horribly.only after years of drawing crap with a few gold nuggets do you reach the motherload. you are now 30 years older and have grown a beard. well done.
It's adorable how the description tries to save us 2 minutes off a 47 minute video
I would say not to worry about what hes doing right now its best we learn from what hes doing. He has a set in his brain already which makes him draw faster than we could. We have to build these same building blocks that he does. If your doing this alone it will take some time or maybe you will see what I see. Hes right about fundamentals
...Maaan
All the things you talked about in here.
They're gold. Keeps me interested from start to end. Awesome.
that's the question I've been wanted to ask, too.
as a illustrator who just started my career, I have to sit in front of the computer and paint all day. just recently I started to have little bit of health problem, such as back pain, and I'm only 22, I just can't imagine how it's going to be when I'm 30.
hey, thank you!!!! I mean it man :) I have just started to read about perspective! Thanks again and hope we could keep in touch!
Its all about practice mate. One day you will get in the industry too!
I think the 4th painting at around 17:30 would have looked incredible as a sort of island.
These videos are fantastic. Really helps inspire me.
Oh my gosh I love watching this guy. He's really helped me improve my skills
This question isn't really directed towards Feng but rather to any experienced artist. Feng always talks about learning the fundamentals of drawing and I wanted to know what those fundamentals where exactly so I could focus my studies more. Thanks.
Thank You Feng, for ALL your videos!!!
You just got yourself a new subscriber. Fantastic info and wonderful work. Thank you for sharing this.
yeah man this is a different side to the art industry, this is design, its like feng says in his other videos, what we are ding here is not art, we are not painting a fancy picture to be sold and made money on, its the game or film thats making the money thus meaning what you are doing is designing, and the designs you do are not simply thrown away, they are used in the production stages and made into enviroment or characters, what your thinking about is fine art and painting where the artist..
For that first one you deleted...
My thought later into that was "Abandoned fortress at a mid range altitude that has now been inhabited by something else."
It could also look sort of benign on the outside, but then you could do an inside shot and it might be hiding some sort of hideous monster.
I don't have the funds to visit art school so learning some really simple things from you would mean a lot to me and many other people.
excellent, this open concept idea will help me create stuff for other people! Thsnkd!
Edit -> Transform -> Flip Horizontal or define a shortcut (no sc given in factory settings as far as i know...)
That's some prime Feng here. Not only eyeballing perspective correctly but also picking colors without cannibalizing anything for palette.
