No apology needed for the length of the video. Very informative as always. And the new hollowing system is fantastic. Can’t imagine what it costs but as I always say, you can’t really put a price on how valuable good equipment is.
Excellent Mike, I've had the system for a year now and I can say ditto to everything you said. You actually refreshed my mind on one or two points that I had forgotten. It was time well spent for me.
Mike, I watched your review twice and then went out and bought the entire system - I really believe this is going to help this ole man get back into hollowing - I had a serious shoulder injury and it just refusing to let me enjoy some of the turning I use to do.
I see you edited your reply - not sure why, I kind of like Hippie :) At any rate, I put down a bunch of money - but I do not care, I got the full system with the Laser as well as the large handle with the 3 collets, and the heavy duty handle - based off my understanding and what I own this should now allow me to have longer/better handles for tools I currently own (that have shorter handles). I have had multiple surgeries on my main shoulder and as such I picked up on your statement that the system did help ease some of that motion and vibration that can lead to discomfort - I know it will not eliminate it, but a little help is always better. Truly stinks getting old - sheesh - Well, Mike again I do appreciate your reviews as well as your turning videos - If I ever get over there, I hope I have time to stop in and say Hello and shake your hand. Have a great day. Robert
I saved this video up because I hadn't time to watch it and I wanted to sit at peace without rushing off to do something and I'm really glad I did because it was excellent. That was a very fair, and reasonable, critique and has made the system very attractive. I checked the prices and they were a lot lower than I imagined. I recently made my first excursion into Simons tools with his sanding systen and I am very impressed with the quality of his stuff so far. I think I'll be buying this hollowing system. Thanks Mike, great video. Best Wishes, Brendan.
I am honoured Brendan that you should even think of saving anything of mine ;)...lol Glad you found it useful in helping you decide what to go for, it is really effective, and easy to use, which is a big plus...because I do like easy! Let me know if you do decide to get it, I'd be very interested to know what you think. Cheers Mike
I am soon to start an extension to my workshop so I have a couple of new tools on my list for when it is finished. I'll probably buy this hollowing kit because, with more room I'll be able to get better access to my lathe. I'll keep you informed. Best Wishes, Brendan.
Excellent review Mike! Thoughtful, comprehensive, objective, and aimed spot on at giving the user a complete picture of the system! I greatly appreciate such a balanced and complete assessment!
Too many comments to make here but I assure you they are all positive. I especially appreciate your taking time to detail the alignment setup. While it may be common knowledge to myself and other long time lathe users, I think it is something often overlooked by new or self taught turners. Very well presented, Mike. But, cease with the apologies.Alert your viewers that this or that video is going to be a little longer than usual and then have at it. We enjoy your offerings or we wouldn't come back. Hope this unit works out for you. All the best, --Joe
Great job Mike. You solved two of my issues with the tool I made. First the bar being level to my bed ways. A simple thing that eluded me. Then the angle of the cutter head. I corrected both of these items and whilst I was happy with the tools overall performance those two things improved the quality of the performance. Thanks for a informative and helpful video. Take care my friend and do a kindness Mark
Thanks Mark, and I am really very pleased that you found some useful content in it mate, objective achieved...:) Take care, and thanks once again for watching my friend Mike
Mike I have this same set up with the laser, found it to be really good takes the physical stress out of hollowing but you still need skills... I have upgraded to the camera I didn't use Simon's system I used an old phone and a PC video cam, this gets passed the challenge of the laser and knowing which bit of the cutter is cutting especially when getting close to the bottom. In addition Simon Hope is a great guy to do business with, an accomplished turner and always ready with help and advice.
hi Chris, I am glad you concur with my initial evaluation of the system. Like with anything there is a learning curve, I totally agree, but I feel this system has a shallow one, and as more time is spent with it, even better results could be achieved. Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it. Cheers Mike
Great outfit Mike. The whole system shouts quality and it's very versatile. I now aim to get the rig but maybe not until Christmas so I'll have to start conditioning my wife on what I would like as a present. Piece of special wood on its way. Best wishes, Alan.
It really is Alan, I am really pleased and impressed. I am sure as I use it more it will perform even better. Your too kind my friend, I shall await the "Postmans Knock" with baited breath ;) Thank you mate, and take care Mike
Really nice piece of British engineering Mike & definitely looks to be fit for purpose. Thanks for the comprehensive 'walk through', very enjoyable & informative. Oh & thanks for the parcel, took my old hands a while to unwrap but well pleased once I got there. Regards ...... Geof
Looks like a great hollowing system Mike, you did a great job in explaining it, I enjoyed seeing you using the laser as I haven't seen a video showing the detail you just did. Take care Rob.
very helpful video Mike, you do explain the workings brilliantly i have watched a good few of your video's now and learnt a lot. i have only started wood turning this year but i am loving it and hope to buy the hope hollowing system for my lovely lady who is loving the turning also, this Christmas. thanks again!
Thanks Andrew, it's great to hear that you are both enjoying your new turning adventure. Let me know what you think of the system in the New Year...lol ;) Take care Mike
Great review Mike. Simon did a demo day at John Davis Woodturning which is near me but unfortunately I was away ! I really wanted to see the hollowing system and was disappointed I couldn't go, so your video is most welcome mate. It is obviously a very complete and high quality system and worth saving up for. Cheers mate, Jim
Thanks Jim, I would like to see Simon demonstrate too, as he is a very talented turner, and teacher. I think I am a very poor substitute for the "real thing" though...lol. take care mate Mike
A great review Mike. I have had the full system for about 6 months now and it certainly has made hollowing a lot easier and more pleasurable with my arthritis issues. You have 'pipped me to the post' with this video... I have been working on one (on and off) for a few months. However I was never able to get all of the required bits in the video at the same time due to the restricted space and camera angles in my little workshop! If you get your head down to centre height your Lady Wife may be able to take a pass across your chin with the cutter ;-) Cheers Tom
Thanks for the upload... my 6mm hollowing tool arrived today so I thought I better watch someone who knows what they are doing using it..... Then I can go and have a play tomorrow.
Great demonstration video, Mike!! You make it look so easy that I might even be able to use that system! Thanks Mike! Another tool I can try to explain the need for to SWMBO.Happy Turning, Mike,.....Gord
Mike thanks again for a very good video mate.. I use the Simon Hope 6mm pro tool and you know Mike I have to say for me it is by far the best and most versatile hollowing too I have used . I also found that there is a little learning curve with this tool but once you get through that its brilliant. the hollowing jig is something I have had on my radar for a while and I think your video have convinced me its the right way to go. I live in Denmark Western Australia and Simon has been great getting tools and equipment shipped over to me and at very reasonable cost . You are right he is a very helpful guy .I have found all the tools I have purchased from him fantastic and they deliver what he says they will. Thanks again for a very good un bias review Mike.Kind Regards Col
Hi Col, I am very happy to hear that you concur with my findings, about the tools and indeed Simon himself. I agree about the learning curve being a shallow one, I haven't spent too much time using the system, but already feel at ease and confident with it. Thanks for watching, and your input. Take care Mike
That was a great and very informative video Mike. I watched it from start to finish and the time flew by. Many thanks for such a detailed and well explained review.
Great video Mike! looks like this system will work for me too..... But saving for bigger lathe right now.... So this will be on the "WANTED" list. -Jim
Looking good Mike!! That arm jog sure looks complicated, but I'm sure that after doing it once it becomes (almost) second nature. I'm glad you found a system that works for you, I think I will finally try out my Ultima in my next project, got a piece of Norfolk island pine piece waiting to be turned, so of course it's end grain, which supposed to be the right way to work with the Ultima, we'll see if I can tame that beast :) The laser system looks nice, I've been meaning to try and rig one for myself, wonder what a world of mess I'll be making with that idea...! Thank you for sharing Mike! Yuval.
Thanks Yuval, it really isn't complicated, but there are a few parts to assemble, but if I can do it, I assure you that anyone can, and it is really effective too. i'm sure you'll tame the Ultima, given your abilities mate, of that there is no doubt. Take care Mike
Hi Mike, great video as usual, many thanks. I realise that this vid has been up a long time but I have only just seen it. One comment if I may, I don't want to appear cocky as you are a far more experienced turner than me but one thing I noticed is the way you check the level of the bar with a spirit level. That method would only be effective if the lathe bed is level, if not then the bar will not be parallel to the bed rail which is the important thing. I understand that you are probably aware of this but a newby may not be. Once again, thanks for all the great videos, keep 'em coming.
Hi David, a very good point, which I had overlooked, as I assumed others would have a level lathe. But, I have to agree that I should have made that clear. Thanks for your input, much appreciated. Cheers Mike
Hi Mike i also have the Hope hollowing rig, i found the best way IMHO to set up the rig "level" is to just like you did to start with by setting the cutter height to centre of steb by adjusting the tool rest, then move tool rest approx 7 to 8 inches away from head stock( do not move height of tool rest) and then extend the tool still resting on tool rest and see if it still lines up with centre, if not, adjust back at rig tool post so that it does, then recheck everything again
Hi Mike Great video as always, Sorry i,m late in commenting just starting to look at all the videos that have been posted. I like the Hope system very much, thanks for the demo. Best Wishes Alan.
Great review CAPT..errr Mike ;) A well explained and enjoyable review and demo, not too long at all Mike ! it looks a very nice piece of kit .Cheers for now Bram
Hi John and thank you. Been using this type of respirator yir eight years now, and am still very happy with its performance, in conjunction with good extraction and air filtration.
Thank you mike one big problem that I'm having is how to prepare green wood for drying hollow forms an spindle work is there a book or a video that you could recommend thank you for your kindness any advise from you or your subscribers would be awesome l love your channel an the way you reply to comments
+Todd Thompson Hi Todd, if you search for Woodturning wet or green wood, many videos on the subject will be listed my friend. Hope this helps, there is also a very good book by a turner called Michael O'Donnell. Cheers Mike
Hello Mike, brilliant video as always! My mum just sent this to me as I have been stuck at the hollowing stage for a while. My dad passed away in 2020, I brought a cheap lathe and tried turning for the first time to make a conga drum shaped urn. This tool looks like it may give me a chance to complete it thank you! I may aswell ask whilst I'm here, I live in South London and it sounds like youre based in the south of the UK? Do/would you consider me bringing the urn to you to help hollow it out?
Great video Mike, but I would really have liked to see what was going on at the other end of the tool/jig. Any chance that you can point me at a clip that shows the whole action. Best wishes, Philip.
Informative and enjoyable as usual Mike but . . . . and this is a very rare occasion . . . somewhat disappointing. There's someone with a bigger tool! When are you going to test out the Anatoly Tsiris gear and give us an updated vid? I'm sure you can fit it in your garage even if your misses has to park her car outside. Have fun!
Thank you Ray ... and I think I would need a MUCH bigger workshop ... that guy does some truly amazing work, no doubt there :) Thanks for watching mate. Cheers Mike
Hello Mike. I was looking at the hollowing system on the link you provided. Can you please tell me if it will work with a 25" swing the site says up to 24".I have a robust American beauty wood wood lathe?
Hi William, I would imagine that if it states a 24" swing, that is the limit. However, a call to Simon would confirm if there is any "wiggle" room. Sorry I can't be of more help. Take care Mike
Hi Mike since making this video have you tried the camera system yet. Thinking of getting this system but not sure if the camera upgrade it worthwhile. Cheers Colin
Great video, very well done. One thing I noticed that might be helpful when setting up the laser. You could use the little level on top of the laser mounting block perpendicular to the headstock. This should verify the laser is spot on vertical. Just a thought. :-)
Hi Mike, great video and looks a great bit of kit. Can you please tell me does the Simon Hope hollowing tool fit into the Handle of the Robert Sorbey spiralling kit? Keep up the good work with the videos.
Great video and well explained Mike, Looks like a great system and good precision and should be a huge assistance to anyone venturing into this investment. By the way love the new look It looks like you are becoming a bit of a Rebel as well LOL.Thanks again take care my friend.
hi mike this is my 6th time watching this video I'm new to wood turning an trying to make mom a urn from cedar to say the least it has been beating me up I've looked at half dozen systems an settled on this 1 I ordered mine a couple days ago I ordered 1 of everything an Mr. hope emailed me the very next day to let me know I'd ordered to much I wanted to thank you for posting an to give Mr. hope a plug (good man to deal with)
Great review Mike and looks the complete hollowing setup , glad I guessed correctly in previous comment as to the type you were purchasing. I think it's time for me to save up .Just a question on the process you will use to dry the Ash . I recently wet turned an end grain hollow form using cherry but left it on lathe a couple of days before I could return to the piece and came back to find a large split in the wood because of pith still being there. How do you dry wet turned hollow forms to stop this? I did add some CA but it just split in a different place .
Thanks Terry, I tend to treat them the same as a wet turned bowl, and try and get the wall thickness even then either bag it(brown paper) with some shavings, and sometimes without shaving. This I have found works quite well, I also must add that this had some small cracking which I CA'd as was needed, and it seems to be holding up OK...Cherry does like to crack at the best of times mind you ;) Take care Mike
+Mike Waldt Cheers Mike , I had not experienced splitting that bad overnight . I usually use newspaper to wrap them in.Would brown paper be better option ?
I really like the look of this system, and your demo. The system looks very well built, and quite heavy duty ready. Do you know if there is a U.S. source?
Hi mike, this has nothing to do with this video but do you know if it's possible to use a supernova 2 chuck on a lathe going in reverse without the chuck flying off the lathe? Please explain. Thank you
Most chucks have some sort of locking system for reverse turning, normally a grub screw arrangement that enables you to tighten them against the spindle shoulder, as does my Axminster chuck. I have never used the Super Nova, so I am not acquainted with the set up. Hope this helps a bit. Take care Mike
Nice beard, you're looking a lot like my dad! thanks for all the detail on these various hollowing systems-- I want to buy one eventually but money is a bit tight right now and I keep spending it on blanks instead....
Hi Robert, I have a short bed lathe with 28" between centres and with the tail stock removed I could use this jig to hollow up to 16" deep, hope this helps Take care Mike
God review on this system, Mike. I hope to see the camera backed off a little to see the system at work. Will the bar slide in deeper or is there a socket for not allowing it to be? Does one always use it with the post forward? Cheers, Lee
+Lee Waterman Thanks me Lee, in future hollowing videos I'll bear that in mind my friend. You can position the post wherever you feel it works best for you. Cheers Mike
do you think the main stem is long enough to use on a 22" lathe. if my math is correct I would need to be 3" higher for center. looks to be a sturdier system than another I'm looking at
Hi Bill, yes it will be fine, it will fit up to a 24" swing :). Here's the link to the info: hopewoodturning.co.uk/jig-s/hollowing-jig/?p=1 Cheers Mike
As always Mike, You are a Greate teacher. I love to see your videos. But all those tools? I know that some people can have aikes (bad english) and having as you bad shoulders, and those tools are a good help for them, but for the majority of all Johns's and Annies it should not be a need. Maybe I am old fashoned, but the question I ask my self is, Wat a bout the plesure, the satifaction, the feeling of joy when you hawe finished somthing even after trials and errors.
Thank you Julius, I know what you mean, but sometimes we get joy from using different tools as well. Take care, and thanks for your support my friend Mike
Great piece! I don:t think that would fit on my lathe. I have a Shopsmith, I:ve had it for over thirty years and at my age I don't think I need to invest in another lathe. Espically for the stuff I do. If I were a professional turner probably, but for a "hobbiest", I have to stay with what I have. Enjoyed the video, as always, and as always, I learned something. Keep it up. The beard is filling in nicely. Got your red suit yet? LOL
No apology needed for the length of the video. Very informative as always. And the new hollowing system is fantastic. Can’t imagine what it costs but as I always say, you can’t really put a price on how valuable good equipment is.
Thank you once again Keith very much appreciated.
Excellent Mike, I've had the system for a year now and I can say ditto to everything you said. You actually refreshed my mind on one or two points that I had forgotten. It was time well spent for me.

Cheers
Mike
+Alan Edwards
Thanks Alan, it's a great system and really suits my needs mate.

Mike
I use the hope hollowing system all the time I chuck a piece up and hope I don't break it while hollowing
Lol William...very droll...very droll indeed :)

Great review ! I see you have the Axminster powered respirator , how do you find it? Thanks.
Hi John and thank you. Been using this type of respirator yir eight years now, and am still very happy with its performance, in conjunction with good extraction and air filtration.
Are you taking it to Newark to demonstrate
Hi Roy, I'm sure Simon will have one there mate 🙂
I managed to get a second hand system with the laser came with the hook bar and the normal 6mm straight bar
wow I like that set up . top demo Mr Waldt
Thank you kind Sir, I was going to use some Chestnut...but decided against it in the end ;)
Take care Leon

could recommend
thank you for your kindness
any advise from you or your subscribers would be awesome
l love your channel an the way you reply to comments
+Todd Thompson
Hi Todd, if you search for Woodturning wet or green wood, many videos on the subject will be listed my friend.
Hope this helps, there is also a very good book by a turner called Michael O'Donnell.
Cheers
Mike
I have just got one of the hollowing tools from Simon but its catching alot whats a good speed to start at
Hi Roy, tilt the cutter about 10° or so and make sure it's cutting just on centre, speed around 1500 - 2000 rpm, and light cuts to begin with.
Ok thank you Mike
Hello Mike, brilliant video as always! My mum just sent this to me as I have been stuck at the hollowing stage for a while. My dad passed away in 2020, I brought a cheap lathe and tried turning for the first time to make a conga drum shaped urn. This tool looks like it may give me a chance to complete it thank you!
I may aswell ask whilst I'm here, I live in South London and it sounds like youre based in the south of the UK? Do/would you consider me bringing the urn to you to help hollow it out?
Hi John glad you found the video helpful. I'm actually in Bedfordshire, send me a PM if you want to arrange something.
Great video Mike, but I would really have liked to see what was going on at the other end of the tool/jig. Any chance that you can point me at a clip that shows the whole action. Best wishes, Philip.
Many thanks Mike. That link shows just what I wanted to see. Thank you for using precious turning time to find it for me. Best wishes, Philip.
A very good and well explained video, that even I can understand.
A bit late but thanks
James
Better late than never James, and thank you.
Take care
Mike
Great teacher
Thank you Gary.
Thanks Mike!
My pleasure and thanks for watching Jonnt.
Have fun!
Thank you Ray ... and I think I would need a MUCH bigger workshop ... that guy does some truly amazing work, no doubt there :)
Thanks for watching mate.
Cheers
Mike
Take care
Mike
Hi Mike since making this video have you tried the camera system yet. Thinking of getting this system but not sure if the camera upgrade it worthwhile. Cheers Colin
Hi Colin, no I haven't mate, the laser is great, and can't justify the extra for the camera.
@@MikeWaldt thanks Mike. Love your video's, keep up the good work.
Great video, very well done. One thing I noticed that might be helpful when setting up the laser. You could use the little level on top of the laser mounting block perpendicular to the headstock. This should verify the laser is spot on vertical. Just a thought. :-)
+Gil Grace
Thanks Gil, appreciate it, and the tip, I'll remember to use that.
Cheers
Mike
Hello Mike. At what angle to you hold the cutters to the vessel?
Hi Daniel, approximately 10° - 15° the less of an angle the less aggressive the cut. Cheers. Mike
Hi Mike, great video and looks a great bit of kit. Can you please tell me does the Simon Hope hollowing tool fit into the Handle of the Robert Sorbey spiralling kit? Keep up the good work with the videos.
Thanks Tony, the Hope 6mm Pro Carbide tool has a 16mm bar, and that I know will fit the Sovereign handle, as I have done it myself.
Cheers
Mike
Great video as always Mike. thanks for this , very helpful. cheers
Thanks for watching Nick

hi mike
this is my 6th time watching this video I'm new to wood turning
an trying to make mom a urn from cedar to say the least it has been
beating me up I've looked at half dozen systems an settled on this 1 I ordered mine a couple days ago
I ordered 1 of everything an Mr. hope emailed me the very next day to let me know I'd ordered to much
I wanted to thank you for posting an to give Mr. hope a plug (good man to deal with)
Hi Todd, I'm pleased to hear that your happy with both the system and Simon himself. Let me know if there's anything I can help you with.
Cheers
Mike
Great stuff like always mike! Keep up the good work!
Thanks Jason

Gostei eu sou marceneiro gostaria de aprender esse serviço de torno sou do Brasil moro na cidade de Angra dos Reis trabalho perfeito parabéns
This I have found works quite well, I also must add that this had some small cracking which I CA'd as was needed, and it seems to be holding up OK...Cherry does like to crack at the best of times mind you ;)
Take care
Mike
+Mike Waldt Cheers Mike , I had not experienced splitting that bad overnight . I usually use newspaper to wrap them in.Would brown paper be better option ?
+Terry Sykes
I do use both Terry...and I really don't think there is any difference mate.
Cheers
Mike
Excellent. I could listen to you ages explain things. Remember Out of Town with Jack hargreaves. Thats who you remind me of.
Thank you I really appreciate you saying that.
Take care
Mike
Do you think that 1.5hp Laguna is strong enough for OneWay coring system?
I would suggest under 2hp would struggle with larger bowls but that is just my opinion Mark.
Informative and well presented. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks you Phil, appreciate it.
Cheers
Mike
I really like the look of this system, and your demo. The system looks very well built, and quite heavy duty ready. Do you know if there is a U.S. source?
It is a great system, but unfortunately not shipped to the US or Canada. Thanks for watching Kevin.
Very informative and interesting video.
Glad you enjoyed it Florence, and thank you.
Cheers
Mike
great video and love your content
Thank you Wyatt

Mike
Hi mike, this has nothing to do with this video but do you know if it's possible to use a supernova 2 chuck on a lathe going in reverse without the chuck flying off the lathe?
Please explain. Thank you
Most chucks have some sort of locking system for reverse turning, normally a grub screw arrangement that enables you to tighten them against the spindle shoulder, as does my Axminster chuck. I have never used the Super Nova, so I am not acquainted with the set up.
Hope this helps a bit.
Take care
Mike
Thanks
glockmeister1213 SuperNova do have the grub screw Mike mentions.
great review Mike, love this system don't think ill be able to afford one though ,take care garry
+Garry Cottee Thanks Garry...it is a great system.
Cheers
Mike
Nice beard, you're looking a lot like my dad! thanks for all the detail on these various hollowing systems-- I want to buy one eventually but money is a bit tight right now and I keep spending it on blanks instead....
+GSMachinist
Thanks...you turn without blanks that's for sure ;)
Cheers
Mike
How long does the lathe have to be if you are hollowing out a 12" deep vessel?
Hi Robert, I have a short bed lathe with 28" between centres and with the tail stock removed I could use this jig to hollow up to 16" deep, hope this helps
Take care
Mike
God review on this system, Mike. I hope to see the camera backed off a little to see the system at work. Will the bar slide in deeper or is there a socket for not allowing it to be? Does one always use it with the post forward?
Cheers,
Lee
+Lee Waterman
Thanks me Lee, in future hollowing videos I'll bear that in mind my friend. You can position the post wherever you feel it works best for you.
Cheers
Mike
do you think the main stem is long enough to use on a 22" lathe. if my math is correct I would need to be 3" higher for center. looks to be a sturdier system than another I'm looking at
Hi Bill, yes it will be fine, it will fit up to a 24" swing :).
Here's the link to the info:

Thank you Mike, just messaged you as well, sorry. Great demo, thanks.
Thank you and my pleasure Jim.
Take care, and thanks for your support my friend
Mike
Great piece! I don:t think that would fit on my lathe. I have a Shopsmith, I:ve had it for over thirty years and at my age I don't think I need to invest in another lathe. Espically for the stuff I do. If I were a professional turner probably, but for a "hobbiest", I have to stay with what I have. Enjoyed the video, as always, and as always, I learned something. Keep it up. The beard is filling in nicely. Got your red suit yet? LOL
+Alan Rouse
Thanks Alan appreciate your comments mate. The beard is coming along....for how long is yet undecided ;)
Cheers
Mike
PS: Now going off to watch the follow up video. :) :)
