I am a introvert and honestly appreciate that the beard makes me less approachable. I will smile and take the approach once I have decided I want to chat.
RBF and tats, 6ft2...185 athletic, mma trainer, firearms trainer and generally Im misanthropic. Keeps people away from unless I choose to interact. And everyone is attentive, respectful and answers my questions promptly. Nobody talks to me when Im in the gym or on the firing line training. Being older and completely white bearded with very close cropped hair has made no difference. But hey Im intelligent well spoken and if I know you Ill give you the shirt off my back if you need it.
I've always smiled at people, especially when I started shaving my head, so I am aware of it. but I refuse to walk around with a constant smile/grin on my face, I'm a serious person and it's hard to be taken seriously when you're forcing a smile that just isn't there. Besides, dogs, cats, and horses like me, plus little old ladies ask me to reach for things at the store and they all know what's up. That's good enough for me.
At 6’4 360, I love having rbf..the nonverbal body language statement just entering a room. The best feeling is the beard in the wind on the road glide, or hiking. Like I’ve been places, seasoned, as it blows in the wind on a 2 lane hwy or trail…a dog with his head out of the car window. Lol
Dan, I have never given this any thought. When I first saw the vid I was like well that doesn’t pertain to me. Then I realized holy cow that’s a thing I’ve never recognized. You rock!!!🍻🍻🍻
I think I might have it, but not certain. I’ll just say I’m the one who has to do the approaching vs being approached most of the time. With and without the beard.
I am 6'5" and most people who guess my weight estimate in the 300-350 range. Any way you look at me, I am intimidating. Along with that, I prefer my hats backwards and I enjoy having a long beard. I am intentional about making eye contact with people and I am an extrovert with introvert tendencies. I enjoy talking with people and most who take a moment to chat understand that there fear is unwarranted. It is nice being able to walk through a crowd though and not have to stop and get people's attention to get through! That said, I observe my surroundings and if I see something like the short person straining to reach the top shelf, I don't usually wait to see if they ask for help, I just take action while verbally offering help. If you can make someone laugh or smile, it goes a long way to diffusing any tension. Honestly, if people are too fearful to speak, approach, etc., that's on them.
Being I have an all gray beard, it seems when I smile I get the, “Hey you look like Santa” and when I don’t smile I get, “Are you in a gang"? I like that it can go either way. sort of like Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hide lol
I’ve always had a RBF. The original RBF and now with a beard I continue to have a RBF. It’s just my natural, straight faced look. I swear I’m not a mean guy, even though my face might tell you different😁
I have long full beard for few years but I never had that long as you it’s my 6.5 month of my regrowing I’m going to take a yeard beard and then I will decide what next . I’m a welder so I don’t know if my work let me to have longer beard because Because it will protrude from under the welding mask but I will se . Take care Dan stay bearded and stay positive 😊
I have just the opposite reaction. I wear a cowboy hat with a salt and pepper beard short to medium length. The hat seems to make me more approachable. I am not a smiler, but people approach me anyway.
I have noticed since my beard has gotten big i get alot more looks and double takes yet people approach me less. Im fine with that because i do have social anxiety.
I have it for sure, I personally like it because it gives me the choice to initiate interaction with others that would normally leave me be or avoid me due to my appearance. I am a nice person, and I treat others with the same respect given to me.
I’m super positive and think I shock people with my personality. I don’t give them a chance to think otherwise lol - I work in a supermarket and customer service every day. I feel confident and proud now that my beard is more profound and on point due to this channel. I wear a hairnet as a beard net matching color of my beard and people are shocked I have one on and sometimes I’m asked why I don’t have one on and I pull it away from my face and say I do and they are like wow lol it’s awesome.
I have it. Someone told me they were intimidated of me because of my beard before. But now it’s super long and I look way more intimidating! I also have angry eyebrows XD and I am a bodybuilder so yeah. Resting beard face for sure.
Interesting question. I think I don't have much of a problem. I try to say hi to folks to be friendly. Also, there is a plethora of bearded men in our area. It's like a convention at the store, lol. So, while it may indeed be true for some people to be intimidated by my "look", I think beards are more acceptable now.
Food for thought, indeed! I see myself in your description, although I don’t think my beard has anything to do with it. I just don’t know how I come across to people. At social gatherings I often tend to think I’m like a Penicillium in a Petri Dish surrounded by dead space. The man who asked if I was a Priest because, he said, I looked like the Blessed Solanus Casey and had a Tranquil Soul, kept an empty seat between us while he said that. My beard has always been white, yet only once did it get a “look-Santa”. I was told I intimidated people but they couldn’t say why or how. Do I have RBF? I really don’t know.
Hi Dan C. I think it is just what is natural to you when I didn't have a big beard I always use to smile on pictures then I stop it . Becauce I saw all men with big beards on pictures not smiling. My wife asked me why you don't smile any more?So I start smile again becauce that is just me. Sincerely Ladislav
This actually makes total sense! When I first met you at the meet up in SA, I was a little intimidated…for about 5 seconds 😂 Once you waved me over and started talking, all intimidation went away lol
This rings true too much with me, i'm always paranoid that my interactions and ammount of people who'd talk to me would be more without the beard, even when I smile you can't really tell and my RBF just makes me look angry when i'm not 😅 even at work not many people talk to me but when they do have to if its work related I feel they're quite surprised that there isn't an angry dude hiding under all the fuzz 😆
I think I've had RBF since birth... but it is Resting Bulldog Face. Always look like I'm either snarling or angry, grumpy, or just a whole lot of "leave-alone". My mom, sister, wife, ex-girlfriends all told me to smile more... but I just don't. Maybe it's a defense mechanism for me living in New York City and being on the streets, but always had it, and now with a beard... some find it nicer, others find it worst.
Absolutely have it! I’ve always had a serious face even as a kid. I was always told you’re always look mad 😂 im only 5.6 not intimidating of course lol but I first realized it when I noticed none of the charities that hang out in front of stores ever asked me to donate for anything. Pan handlers won’t come up to me. Neither will Jehovah’s Witnesses on the street.😂 my daughters were the first to alert me to this. That’s when I realized it.Lmaooooooo
I get it a lot. I'm told I look mad all the time. Like you said, I don't sit around with a smile on my face. I say make me smile and you will see I'm not mad. My boss told me in a review I look mad all the time. I didn't really know how to respond other than to say, "well I'm not" Is what it is.
Hannah is ALWAYS asking me why I have an angry look on my face and I legit just told her the other night “this is just the way I look” 😅 … I may have even used this term not knowing it’s alternate meaning! 🤣 Too funny.
How I see it, a man with a long or bushy beard will appear more intidating because it makes the man look tougher. Same thing with shorter beards, but I don't think I've ever felt intimidated by a man with a short beard at first glance. If we walked around with more of a happy looking facial appearance, it would appear less intimidating at first glance. That being said, my beard is not at a length where it will intimidate another person.
Haha I definitely have it, I’m an easy going guy but I’ve been told my resting face is not approachable and I’ve been told I’m very intimidating to start a conversation. I need to work on smiling more
@DanCBearded let's just say, I use RBF to describe Kev's face all the time now! It's so fun when there are two meanings! Mine, on the other hand is the original "RBF" 🤨😂🤣

Oh interesting!!
Sometimes... unfortunately no one was willing to pay my bills, yet. Guess I have to improve my RBF game 😂
Haha keep working on it!
Don't worry about the opinions of strangers. It's a sin to worry
Well shucks
People always look at me like im a psychopath because i have naturally angry looking eyebrows and my brow bone is like a cave man 💀
Haha I hear ya

so strange i was curious if anyone had a video of this exact topic I'm growing it out I'm 4 months in already experiencing this , people are very offended
Got you covered!
Yeah I have it like everyone else i am nice & I am quite this one time two people told me to talk you are scaring 😱 us.😅😅
My brother and mom would ask why are you mad 😅
haha I hear ya
I dont think I have RBF. If anything more people talk to me now than when I didn't have the beard even with me shaving my head to skin people seen to want to talk to me.
Although I'm only 5'3 so even if I had RBF I dont think I'd be all that intimidating looking lol.
Your pic is RBF! haha
@@DanCBearded hey I was looking in the direction of the sun, I was squinting lol
Guilty of that dan i just aint a natural smiling happy person from other people's perspective my beard no smile and black/dark metal clothes might send out the wrong impression but i dont care really i aint a massive people person sue me 😁 smirk and grin now that's another story i could do that easily
Could work for you!
😎👌
