The Motors : Love And Loneliness

  • From Wikipedia: The Motors were a British pub rock band, formed in London in 1977 by former Ducks Deluxe members Nick Garvey and Andy McMaster together with guitarist Rob Hendry (who was replaced in May 1977 by Bram Tchaikovsky) and drummer Ricky Slaughter. Their biggest success was with the McMaster penned song "Airport", a number 4 UK hit single in 1978. en.wikipedia.or...
However this track shows a style way beyond pub rock, into an epic sound with seemingly elements of both new wave and progressive rock. It was released as a single in 1980 and also appeared on the final Motors album Tenement Steps. Strangely, the album didn't chart in the UK and only barely made the US charts. The single reached UK No. 58; Canada No. 60; U.S. No. 78.

One of my favorite singles of the late 70s early 80s. I can't help but think this sound was hugely influential on bands that came later like Human League, New Order, Flock of Seagulls, etc.

This is the Best thing they ever did, even if "Airport" was the hit in the US. Majestic, sweeping, wall to wall power pop, and even though it's catchy as f**k a close listen reveals just how bitter and really angry a song this is. Amazing. McMaster ' s expressions sure help in that regard as well. A shame these blokes weren't able to find that hook more often and really go farther.
