These costumes deserve so much praise! She not only balanced traditional African culture, modern culture, marvel comics, and royal garments, she did it in a way that was beautiful and created an amazing atmosphere

Yes! They did this with the score of the movie as well, with the African talking drum and an 808 machine in T'challa's theme as well, for an example.

I'm Nigerian and any time she referenced Nigerian culture I couldn't stop smiling. This is more than just a movie to me. It deserves all the success it gets

Dominic 'The Lord' Kabinga That’s unfortunate and I think all African countries should be mentioned more and there should be more diversity in film, but it’s nice to have my country mentioned without the negative connotations that are usually associated with it.

It’s people with an attention to detail like this that make movies great. I didn’t notice all this stuff when I watched it, but it’s like you could almost sense the love and care that went into the world building.
Drew Ferrandini It gives the universe of the film texture. Makes it more lived in. Gives me a solid reason to go back for a rewatch.
One of my favourite details I didn't notice in the movie is the throne room. It is inscribed with the written language of the Leopard People and the floor is glass because the room is built above the ancient meeting place of the tribes shown in the prologue.

I love it, bc it encourages you to get deeper into the underlying cultures. The movie in general just gives you a hint of Africa and wherever you look, it just keeps on showing you more and more things you can learn about.
I love things like this. Things maybe folks don't pick up on completely or even notice, but that the movie wouldn't be the same without. You'd absolutely notice if the quality was less than this high level

I know nothing of African apparel. It's pretty amazing that it wasn't just thrown together. All the clothing actually has meaning and symbolism. She obviously did some extensive research.

I'm not much a costume person nor into fashion but there's NO denying that each outfit crafted for this film was a piece of unique art. It's a celebration of culture & should be celebrated in its craftsmanship

Yup! They did it on the Victora's Secret runway back in 2013.
She did an amazing job in Black panther and all the costumes were so beautiful. Kudos to her and her team.

I mean, it is actually pretty cool, since I have both sides, I can celebrate 3 Christmases a year, mostly 2, and I also went to Nigeria where I spent Christmas with my other relatives there and some of my cousins that were born in Nigeria and came to America came with us too. I love my life right now.

my grandmother dressed like the merchant tribe elder...she had the huge earrings too, the turban, the indigo clothing, everything's accurate. only things missing: dark henna on finger tips and bottom lip tattoo. I miss her sooooo much
Watching this breakdown is dizzying. The level of detail and symbolism behind these garments that you otherwise wouldn't take note of or understand is incredible. She is a master of her craft.
So proud when I saw the Sotho blankets in the movie.
Lehakwe Tloti I saw Black Panther not long after watching a video about Lesotho on Geography Now(a YT channel) and noticed the blankets in the movie. I though it was so cool to see something I’d just learned about shown in such a big film

I am not even black and I am super proud of this film. Everything is so detailed and the culture is being continually referenced. This whole movie is on point.

Suicide Squad won in the Makeup and Hairstyling category. Black Panther will likely get a nomination in the Costume Design category.
While I agree that this is an incredible research effort and the amount of thought that went into it is insane and super interesting, I dare you to say Tudor fashion is boring. The Renaissance saw a change in fashion that wouldn't be met again until the rise of the hemlines in the 20th century. I mean, hair was being worn openly, cleavage was shown, more underskirts were being worn and even substituted in order to make clothes appear even bigger. Mens fashion started to change rapidly as well. After the Renaissance there was barely a single piece of clothing that looked the same and had the same purpose it had before.
If you want to call something boring, then please take a different era for it (for example most movies set in modern times).
Ok, sorry for my rant. But once you look into it, European Renaissance fashion is just as interesting as traditional African clothing, you just have more stereotypes about it, bc it gets referenced a lot more.
+Graup Tudor, Renaissance, and Elizabethan clothes are not boring. However, the fact that they always get nominated/win makes it boring and predictable. And that's what the comment is about. The costuming in Black Panther is fresh and imaginative because we've never seen designs like this. We've seen numerous interpretations of what Queen Elizabeth wore, but never an African queen in the 21st century with advance tech. And the way Ruth Carter describes her design process, how the beads on the Dora is passed down mother to daughter, or how they 3D printed Angela Bassett's headdress. It's awe inspiring
I've seen this movie about 6 times and each time, the costume design never seems any less impressive or breathtaking
First off: Ms. Carter did an amazing job with the costumes. Second: at 1:44, T'Challa has the perfict "Oh no" look on his face after Shuri says "Did he freeze?"
If this doesn’t win for best costume design or even nominated then the award ceremony can be shut down.

Mystical and futuristic is the best way to describe Black Panther and it’s what made it such an interesting experience to me. What a fantastic film, can’t wait for the sequel.

I just realised Zuri is the only wakandan man that doesn't have a "Letter'rest of name" type of name. N'Jobu, N'Jadaka, W'Kabi, T'Challa and T'Chaka all follow that pattern.
Shao Xun Leong i assume that the shamans of wakanda don't have a letter in front? in the scene with young t'chaka and n'jobu and zuri, he said he was 'zuri, son of badu' his father badu doesn't have a letter in front either, and zuri grew up to be shaman so i assume that badu was shaman before zuri took over, probably due to retirement or death.
I really love the videos where directors break down scenes, but having ones like this with costume designers and DPs is an awesome idea, too. They don't get enough recognition.
If another Victorian/20th century era film wins the Oscar for best costuming next year...

UltimateKyuubiFox You are right! So many movies have such great fashion and costuming that _aren't_ about medieval European aristocracy, yet it feels like that is all that wins in Oscars.
UltimateKyuubiFox In the last 4 years, the costume design award has gone to The Grand Budapest Hotel, Mad Max: Fury Road, Fantastic Beasts, and Phantom Thread so the Academy is not that rigid anymore.
Vino sitas To say that they “copy” each other is silly. You know very well that they’re going for historical accuracy in those costumes. Historical accuracy is a good thing. Just because you can’t appreciate the nuances and differences among different European cultures in different countries and time periods doesn’t mean that they’re all copies. So far, Black Panther is my top contender for Best Costume Design (for the year) but let’s not resort to silliness.

This is giving me life. I wish they did an entire documentary breaking down the movie, and how fantasy was based off of actual African culture, math, science, and resources. Loved how she draws on top of the images to give more detail. A beautiful captivating people we are. #Wakanda forever
