Good to know, I'm tired of all this data collection too. Like you I dont mind my email, but yea... there is no logical reason to ask for phone number unless they intend to be spamming you with txts, or worse, selling your phone number to others to spam you.
I have a throwaway pay as you go SIM card for these ridiculous apps that insist on SMS verification, so I can get the verification text, then turn it off and forget about it.
