The name is a play on "Horumon" which is a traditional Japanese food, and is made from cheaper meat cuts and served as street-food. The band started as a hard-core punk band (and weren't very good). They switched to nu-Metal and were a lot better. And then they started making music like this.
To be precise it's play on words. Horumon for the aforementioned dish but also the English word Hormone. First few years their name was written in English and it was "Maximum The Hormone" before they changed it to Kanji (Japanese letters) which they use today. Basically they wanted to commemorate their love for food and craziness/hormonalness
