    About the princess thing, I wanted them to really get into Jeanie’s perspective. And I get it. Princesses exist beyond Disney and have before the popularity of Disney princesses. “Bratty” connotations of royalty such as remarks like “yes your highness🙄” when a woman is being “demanding”, DO exist. When “princess” is said, it depends on the context and tone in which it’s said that makes it sexist or not. I think that’s where Jeanie was getting at. However, Disney changed the way princesses were looked at and put them into a positive light which is GREAT. Now when we think of princesses we think of those influential women. I think the parents who are complaining should just adopt Disney’s interpretation of a princess.

    I hate how nowadays society craps on anything feminine. Nothing wrong with princess.
    I understand it's important to teach children (especially little girls) about being independent and that they can do things for themselves. But, what's wrong with promoting balance? It's okay to be feminine, caring, gentle, etc. There isn't ONLY value in being masculine, strong, leading, etc.
    Then Disney princesses are strong in a unconventional way....there is strength in their feminine energy.
    Feminism is about equality, saying being masculine and feminine are both important and equal. Not that everyone should be masculine and femininity is weak. I hate that narrative.

    Jeannie gets it, it deffo has negative connotations. I think Disney mean they want to reclaim the term from how at times it is used in a sarcastic way. When someone acts entitled you might say they are acting like a princess to suggest they are being spoilt similar to the phrase 'she thinks she is royalty' . Ofcourse mothers talking to their daughters will use it positively but thats a given.

    • @mimia.4810
      @mimia.4810 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      But I think the deeper question that Tamera was trying to get at is....where did that connotation come from? In all the Disney princess movies, the princess weren't entitled or spoilt. They all had great personalities.
      Disney has done a fair job in portraying princesses in a positive light. I remember Disney princesses being the most sweetest and caring characters. Maybe I'm missing something.

      Why are we giving AIR to such a negative term!!
      This is what I don't like and don't want to hear from Jeenie!! I appreciated that the girls weren't giving it so much space because there's nothing wrong with being called a princess, as a girl or as an adult!! It should never be considered a negative term!!
      Princess is such a term of endearment and cherishing!! That's it!!
      I'm not going to accept or let other meanings of it taint the word!! Plain and simple!!

    JEANNIE IS BEYOND THIS SHOW ;princess in many of the fairytales we watched growing up meant someone who was waiting to saved by prince charming;DAMSEL IN DISTRESS waiting to be saved,who are victims to evil step sisters and witches and are saved by a prince.Disney only modified the narrative because of the feminist movement .There is no way a kid understands that it not reality especially if we dress them up and call them princess.I grew up believing fairytales and silly soaps that are fashioned the same way.Its an unrealistic protrayal of women.

    • @mimia.4810
      @mimia.4810 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I disagree, I think Disney princesses taught valuable traits. It depends how you look at it.
      Most, if not all, of the princesses were kind, gentle, loving, and caring. They remained the same despite all of the negatives of society (represented by witches and evil step sisters lol).
      I think there is something to be said about people,in real life, with those traits. Disney princesses taught a different kind of strength and power....femininity! Too many times, society shames feminine energy and only acknowledges the strength in masculinity. But there is strength in femininity and Disney princesses had that strength.
      I think that's what Tamera was trying to get at (which is a fair point) I don't think Jeannie is "beyond" this show.

Also, this prince thing coming and saving me, I was completely unaware but yeah subconciously I did expect it despite my mom warrning me when I was a girl that it's not rational. The word "princess" it can go many directions and it just depends on how people say it or representing it as. When I think of the word princess as a child it's like oh I'm special in a good way. As a adult I think of it in Disney princess way which is confident, kind, hardworking, adventurous and independent. Like there's a quote from a Barbie movie called Princess Charm School and the character Blaire/Princess Sophia say "There's a princess in every girl " I love that quote so much. So don't think of the word princess in a bad way because it can be in a good way too.

    I’m a guy and one of my guy friends used to call me “princess” as both a derogatory term and a term of endearment. I’m gay. And also at the time I was so nice/noble to EVERYONE that I was sometimes naive as to people’s ill intentions. I took forever to get ready because I always HAD to look good. And i wasn’t hyper masculine like all all the other (straight) dudes in our friend group. So he called me a princess to make fun off all of those afore mentioned traits and to call me high maintenance. But it was also his term of endearment for me because he was my closest friend in that friend group and he’d literally be my knight in shining armor when I needed help with anything or if someone tried to start something with me (even tho I could easily defend myself. I’m not scared to throw hands).
    But yeah, that is a perfect example of both the positive and negative connotations that could be inferred when calling someone a princess. I’m really confused as to how none of the other girls picked up on Jeanie’s point. She was spot on.

    *all I know is.... my boyfriends grandpa who’s in his 70’s... uses the term “princess” in the most negative light.... my boyfriends brother broke up with his girlfriend recently because she was too “needy” he said... when we were discussing it with his grandpa he goes “yeah apparently she was a princess”. So yes.... TO ME “princess” is just a cute NAME.. that’s all it should carry.. is a NAME, it’s a TITLE... it’s not too deep to most. But there are some people who use it in a certain way and I think that’s what the question being asked is referring to!*
    *EDIT: I love Tamera. I love them all. Just my two cents.. for some reason I felt she was almost offended someone could look at the word “princess” in a negative way... and nobody is disagreeing with her at the table. Jeannie wasn’t saying that saying “princess” SHOULD be used in a negative way... she’s just bringing up the fact that some people DOOOO use that term in a negative way.*
    *its not the way you use it in a sentence.. just your meaning behind it. Just like my example above with my boyfriends grandpa...*
    *and the question was “is princess SEXIST?” Not... “if calling children princess’ is bad” like I think Tamera was getting offended by*
    *disclaimer... I freaking love the real and all four of the hosts. This is JUST SIMPLY my observations about this ONE clip and the topic at hand... much love* ♡
    *last edit after finishing the clip.... they looked too deep into this.... I felt everyone was mad at jeannie for some reason LOL..... jeannie wasn’t saying being a princess is bad (I mean towards the end she did say u should feel good about yourself without being called a princess, yes) but all jeannie was answering... WAS THE QUESTION.. the question simply was “is it sexist?” Jeannie was just saying “yes... it CAN be.. because some people do look at it that way.. in a negative light”. That was ALL....*
    *i will even stick up for Tamera because I just don’t think she was able to explain her feelings correctly... I don’t think when Tamera calls her daughter a princess that it means she’s more powerful or more better than anyone..... I think Tamera just means it in a endearing (and most importantly) very SIMPLE way... it’s **JUST.A.CUTE.NAME*
    *all I know is? Yes..... the term “princess” can come across as sexist. As I believe my boyfriends grandpa is sexist LOL. Does it mean it’s sexist for everyone? No. Some people use the term in a good way. That’s all!! Lol!!*
