This podcast really picks up after the first hour! With my background in AI, I completely resonate with what Pavithran Rajan brilliantly articulated about data control. The one who controls data controls the narrative, and ultimately, the one who controls the narrative controls world order. His deep insights on data localization and ICT manufacturing are spot on - it’s crucial that we safeguard our infrastructure and data. Pavithran sir’s clarity and foresight on these critical issues are truly commendable. The future of any nation’s security and sovereignty will depend on how well it can protect and leverage its own digital resources. A must-listen for anyone thinking seriously about these issues!

Gen Shukla is erudite and definitely articulates very well. However, his views appeared defensive and more of tactical nature talking of state craft & trade craft to execute plans on ground. He missed the very basic point of need for complete indigenisation of ICT infrastructure !! No self respecting sovereign nation aspiring to be a 'Vishwa Guru' can afford to do that. Col Pavithran on the other hand had a more strategic outlook in his understanding of future wars and how India needs to prepare itself for challenges ahead. I totally agree to his point of building strategic capabilities today and intentions can change later. Strangely, the General seemed not too covinced about the same. We are not like the US who can make the NATO trail behind them whenever they want to. India will have to fight its own battles by itself where in all probability they will find US supporting our adversary or at best a being a neutral party !!

This podcast has brought out very important aspects of how seriously India should take it's national security. The need to control crucial technologies has been very well brought out by Col Pavithran, along with the need for the military establishment to wake up from it's stupor and play an active role in defining the national security narrative. Gen Shukla has also brought out valid points on how important it is for the military commanders to understand emerging technological trends and cultivate a culture that encourages out-of-the-box thinking, even if it does not conform to the thinking of the top leaders. Looking forward to more such podcasts. Hopefully the political establishment is listening in.
It was such a charm to listen to Gen. Shukla & Col. Rajan. Beautiful minds. Kudos 👏 💐 to Smitha Prakash for bringing in such knowledgeable people and conducting a mighty good podcast. Lovely 😍.
I have been following many podcasts related to national security and ongoing conflicts. What I’ve noticed is that many content creators struggle to frame their questions and keep the discussion engaging. That's something I truly like about your podcast. You not only ask great questions but also bring in highly knowledgeable guests for the discussions. Thank you for producing such good content, and please keep it coming!
I find Lt. Col. Rajan is Tactical (practicality and reality) and Lt. Gen. Shukla is Strategic (policy & political). Lt. Col Rajan is well connected with the ground realities. Both have contributed handsomely to the discussion.
A wonderful free flowing podcast where the two brilliant military minds spoke with openess (sometimes dangerously frank ..😀) and originality. They were professional enough to respect the difference in perception of future warfare and the challenges we as a nation face in addressing these issues. Incisive questioning by Col Pavi who in his own inimitable style brought home the point of why senior military leadership should not sucuumb to the ailing dogma of political & bureaucratic system and must think freely. The General was professionaly honest enough to concede that the three stars & four stars must bring in their A game to prepare for the future wars and not for the last war fought as it would most definitely have disastrous consequences without a bullet being fired. The inherent resistance bred in old school thinking which has often misunderstood and even undermined the need for a fully indigenised ICT was brought to fore during the discussion. It's about time that we break the shackles of our mindset that is overly dependent on the western technologies and build our own fully indigenised ICT systems. If China can do it for themselves why can't India. The only limiting factor it seems is in the space between the two ears at the decision making levels. Special Kudos to Smita Prakash for bringing such topical subjects in her podcasts.

It was scary the discussions outcome, perhaps it is an eye opening and risk of National Security. I strongly feel General Shukla is the right candidate to suceesser of next NSA. ANI should forward this podcast to Ministry of defence for their information.
Brilliantly articulated and a well rounded podcast. Much needed - Smitaji. These discussions are essential for shaping India's rising soft power in the world and in the Global South. Many counties value India's neutrality, inclusivity and subjectivity when it comes to collaboration. However, in order to ensure an accelerated solid growth trajectory we need independent think tanks at the heart of India and abroad. These should be advising the government and the armed forces about current and future technological and geopolitical landscapes. Many think tanks in the USA and UK are well-connected globally and can influence international debates on security. By establishing forums, think tanks and ecosystems similar to those in the USA/UK, India can promote approaches to addressing both national and global security concerns like terrorism, nuclear proliferation, and climate risks. This can improve international relations and support cooperative security frameworks that benefit the country. I especially resonate with Lt Col Rajan's comment about advising the Gen independently! It is particularly relevant in this day and age of asymmetric and digital warfare. A small comment on X can cause a riot in a sensitive state or an Instagram picture can lead to a celebrity being boycotted by the public! As the means of warfare and threat landscapes are evolving, conventional wisdom must also be challenged and an independent think tank will provide an external voice that can challenge the assumptions of policymakers and military leaders. By effectively offering alternative perspectives, these forums can introduce innovative ideas, ensuring more robust policy discussions and preventing strategic blind spots that could jeopardize national security!
Worth listening to this conversation, especially Pavi's insights on recent international issues. His well-informed observations reflect his years of dedicated experience as a retired officer in the Indian Army. Jai Hind!
Smitha Prakash and team, a very good job. Great podcast.Thank you. Your guests were brutally honest. I hope the government takes note in a positive manner. A humble request please forward this episode to PGuru, shree Iyer, sumeet Peer, The Jaipur dialogue, and Adi Achint. So that they don't lull the public into believing that China is a walkover but a real threat. These podcasts must also have similar high caliber guests. Thank you once again.
One scary thought to come from this is that most of us still don't understand that cyberspace is the most lethal weapon in this age. We think of Long Range Missiles as lethal in the conventional setting. But now, high value targets can be identified and tracked in real time via the cyberspace or even the AD systems can be sabotaged to fail at stopping the incoming barrage. Thus cyberspace would enable destruction at a larger scale. Another really informative and eye opening podcast!!!
Amazing conversations as always SmitaJi !! Thank you to ANI team to bring great education for common listeners - your tone and interaction is amazing. Please keep up the good work.
Very invigorating, national security conversations between an erudite General and a candid Colonel. While Parliamentary control over the military in democracy is a given the very unique Indian style of “civil control “ over the military acted as an millstone around the neck of the nation the weight of which continued to grow and subjugated the military both in thought and action, leading to present state. Though establishment of CDS and DMA maybe right step, but the years of legacy of psychological subjugation is very difficult to shred unless systemic transformational changes are implemented in the organisational culture of the Armed Forces. For decades, India enjoyed the “common goods” without concomitant, commitment of resources, both military and civil in establishing and protecting them. This restricted our aspiration only to safeguard our boundaries and did not inspire the nation to establish capacities to go beyond them. While today the aspiration appears to be there ,once again, the nation is shying away from commitment of resources , instead replacing it with perceived sense of strategic autonomy in matters, economic, and political. Once again, the strategic fate of the nation will be in the hands of external powers, through new and emerging alliances whether you claim to be part of it or not. Gen Raj Shukhla brought out these aspects very openly and recommended cultural transformation in thought and action by the armed forces. This cultural transformation is a must for the technological transformation Pavithran was recommending. There should be no doubt in anybody’s mind that indigenous ICT infrastructure is the only way to go,. however, given our capacites, the road to transformation to total indigenous ICT is long and winding. The question is are we on that road carbon neutral India by 2075.? Ambitious as it may sound , How about self reliant ICT by 2030? Democratisation of R&D; go beyond investing in only IITs and Govt Inst. Trust the Private Universities and Industries and invest in their R&D capacities. The second issue, Pavithran raised about data localisation and privacy can only be neglected at our own peril. The consequences are staring at us from all around us . Before the bolt from the blue hits you, It’s time to put our act together on this issue. Smita and Ajit need to be congratulated for putting these conversations in public domain
This is probably the most invigorating conversation in your channel’s history. Update the title to mention the healthy debate by two competent people discussing importance of strategic autonomy in age of Tech and AI!
I see this discipline in these army men in this pod cast when the senior talks there’s no interference from junior officer amazing how that training is still instilled even after there respective retirements
Awesome discussions. I give full credit to ANI and the participants. But i am afraid these discussions end up as just chat and outcomes. How can we turn these discussion to connect to policy makers and decision makers?
Israel - Iran war, nuclear option I just finished watching the Smitha Prakash podcast on the above topic. I love the ANI SP podcasts featuring many known faces and voices, a special favorite being the samosa caucus. I tuned in to this particular one that featured two high ranking retired army officers, expecting to hear an expert, erudite prediction on the ultimate outcome of the present strife in the Middle East. But, at the end of it all, even such an ominous hashtag appeared like a small signature on one corner of a mammoth canvas, the whole, nearly 2 hour discussion traversing into a sphere, way, way beyond the scope of the title of the podcast. It was so riveting , so all encompassing about warfare, so enlightening but also so intimidating to the intellectual sensibility of an ordinary mortal like myself that, the previous intellectual podcasts felt like nursery school classes! We were enslaved to the couch leaving all other daily chores behind for those couple of hours as we optimistic and boastful citizens were shown on a crystal clear mirror, an unblemished image of the numerous blemishes that set us miles and miles apart from the next imperfect nation, but also felt happy that our ignorance was dispelled to a such an extent that we would be mindful of our next rhetorical proclamation.
My pranam to both sirs...🎉 Really the discussion and the discontent induced innovation is the best a podcast can give... Thankyou @Ani @Smita_ma'am Please have more such podcasts especially with these honorable sirs ❤
Opening statements: It’s not 3. Add the Iran backed Al-Houthis from Yemen where US has directly engaged. Then earlier last week there were rockets fired from IRAQ. Then you have the Syrian front. So it is 5 in total. I have travelled to 4 out of the 5 countries and know the dynamics well. 🙏 Thank you Smita ji
The biggest takeaway from the podcast is that, the extremely narrow pyramid of career progression opportunities in the military is harming the professional ethos of the Indian Military. The General confesses that his presentation (linked to his own career) was more important than the larger aim of having an indigenous OS. The younger officers watching this would have also drawn the lessons from this. The Chetwodian motto is long dead, it’s my career every time first, the rest can be faked. The military and the nation is the loser. I agree with the Colonel, ‘For want of a nail, the kingdom is lost’. SSA Jai Hind!

When I have to ask serious questions to anyone or shout at my children, I speak only in Hindi. I must not be digging for words when I am serious 😊🙏🏽🇮🇳
When a discussion takes place in English, it should be in English only as there are listeners who are not conversant with Hindi. Ideal if the suggestion is followed.
But then Col Pavithran Rajan doesn't lapse into any other language. It is only gentlemanly that when you announce that the discussion is in a particular language, you stick to it.
@@sasikumart6693 Hindi is a major language, understood across length and breadth of the country, so it is understandable if someone switches to it to express themselves better, if people who can can subdue infront of English as a language, they shouldn't have any issue with the language understood by the majority of the masses...

This conversation enriched my knowledge base. This is what every podcast should aspire to be.
Worth listening to this conversation, especially Pavi's insights on recent international issues. His well-informed observations reflect his years of dedicated experience as a retired officer in the Indian Army.
Jai Hind!

A humble request please forward this episode to PGuru, shree Iyer, sumeet Peer, The Jaipur dialogue, and Adi Achint. So that they don't lull the public into believing that China is a walkover but a real threat. These podcasts must also have similar high caliber guests. Thank you once again.

Bahot intezaar ke baad, dhanyavaad❤
Very very insiteful podcast!
Thank you for getting such luminaries for your podcast!❤
One scary thought to come from this is that most of us still don't understand that cyberspace is the most lethal weapon in this age.
We think of Long Range Missiles as lethal in the conventional setting. But now, high value targets can be identified and tracked in real time via the cyberspace or even the AD systems can be sabotaged to fail at stopping the incoming barrage. Thus cyberspace would enable destruction at a larger scale.
Another really informative and eye opening podcast!!!
Great knowledge depth 🙏🙏
What a beautiful discussion .
What an intellectual talk .
Desi touch is must in everything.

What a informative podcast love general Shukla
Love these podcasts!! Please please please bring in more ex-army professionals!
So much information power packed into this podcast is what we need. Definitely made me think more responsibily about my country
One of the best podcast on national security
This is probably the most invigorating conversation in your channel’s history. Update the title to mention the healthy debate by two competent people discussing importance of strategic autonomy in age of Tech and AI!
Great podcast!! Need to listen to it again
It was great learning & understanding warfares & technology.
Smitha, Thank you for making this podcast. ❤🙏🏻
Col pavitharan huge fan. Thanks
Good info
Thanks for podcast
Very intellectual discussion ❤
I see this discipline in these army men in this pod cast when the senior talks there’s no interference from junior officer amazing how that training is still instilled even after there respective retirements
Anytime.. ANI.. Time favorite.. Madam, namaskar... After long long time... 🎉🎉
Awesome discussions. I give full credit to ANI and the participants. But i am afraid these discussions end up as just chat and outcomes. How can we turn these discussion to connect to policy makers and decision makers?
Israel - Iran war, nuclear option
I just finished watching the Smitha Prakash podcast on the above topic.
Israel 🕊 hand is not too short to reach out anywhere and any time.
Shalom Jerusalem 🕊 Israel 🕊 🇮🇱
2000 years they like street dogs.
I was egarly waiting for this men.

Thankyou @Ani @Smita_ma'am
Please have more such podcasts especially with these honorable sirs ❤
Gen Shukla should be the next NSA...
Truly fantastic podcast
Amazing Discussion !!!
Smitaji, unlike some comments below, I do not agree that you interrupted the guests too much. You very correctly directed the conversation.
Finally great guest again ❤
Best gift for this navaratri. Truly loved it.❤❤❤❤
Absolutely wonderful
I am officially scared for our countey
The biggest takeaway from the podcast is that, the extremely narrow pyramid of career progression opportunities in the military is harming the professional ethos of the Indian Military.
The General confesses that his presentation (linked to his own career) was more important than the larger aim of having an indigenous OS. The younger officers watching this would have also drawn the lessons from this. The Chetwodian motto is long dead, it’s my career every time first, the rest can be faked.
The military and the nation is the loser. I agree with the Colonel, ‘For want of a nail, the kingdom is lost’.

Jai Hind!
It was enlightening podcast.
Smita was so ill prepared for this interview plus not sure why she was interrupting so much.
Mind boggling interview. Very rich
Amazing. Rich with stats and details.
I absolutely love your Podcast Smita ji. I do feel your colleague should not feel pressured in speaking in English. He should speak in Hindi and enjoy his flow of questions. We know he knows English Very Well and he can write and communicate in English if need be. But he slows down with his English Questions. When I have to ask serious questions to anyone or shout at my children, I speak only in Hindi. I must not be digging for words when I am serious 😊🙏🏽🇮🇳
Enough to keep me awake tonight😢
Amazing podcast!
With all due respect, Lt. Gen. Shukla's defensiveness is the very problem we're facing.
This is a super podcast❤ Happy vijaydashmi
When a discussion takes place in English, it should be in English only as there are listeners who are not conversant with Hindi. Ideal if the suggestion is followed.
If you cannot understand Hindi it's your problem
It's an instinct.. When you are conversating in English with hindi speakers, you tend to speak a few words of hindi.. Same with other languages
But then Col Pavithran Rajan doesn't lapse into any other language. It is only gentlemanly that when you announce that the discussion is in a particular language, you stick to it.
@@Tillu_dream16-39Imagine Col lapses into his mother tongue, would you appreciate it?
@@sasikumart6693 Hindi is a major language, understood across length and breadth of the country, so it is understandable if someone switches to it to express themselves better, if people who can can subdue infront of English as a language, they shouldn't have any issue with the language understood by the majority of the masses...
Let the guests speak Smita ji
