Suriname 2022 - part 2, Commewijne district

District Commewijne - voormalig plantagegebied
In 2022 maakten wij een reis naar Suriname, waarbij wij telkens uitstapjes van enkele dagen maakten vanuit Paramaribo. De reis was georganiseerd door Waterproof Tours, en het tweede deel van de reis ging per fiets naar het district Commewijne, eerst langs de weg naar Leonsberg, daarna met een bootje naar de overkant van de Surinamerivier. Via Fort Nieuw Amsterdam naar Mariënburg en daarna met een bootje naar de overzijde. Met de fiets bereik je dan Mariënbosch, een gerestaureerd plantagehuis eigendom van Saoed Abdoelrahman. Wij werden hartelijk ontvangen door de familie en hebben daar twee dagen prima doorgebracht. Op de fiets zijn we een stuk langs oud plantagegebied gereden, waar weinig meer van over is.
Na terugkomst in Paramaribo maakten we nog een dolfijnentour vanuit Leonsberg naar de monding van de Commewijne. De rivierdolfijnen hielden ons daar goed bezig.
Commewijne District - former plantation area
In 2022 we made a trip to Suriname, formerly known as Dutch Guyana. The trip was managed by Waterproof Tours and we made short excursions each lasting a few days, from the capital Paramaribo. This is the video I made of our trip into former plantation territory along the Commewijne river. Our mode of transport was... a bicycle, first half an hour along the road to Leonsberg to take a small ferry across the Suriname River to New Amsterdam. We visited the remains of the fort, then continued to an abandoned sugar mill, and found another ferry across the Commewijne river, ending up at our destination, the restored plantation house of Mariënbosch. Here we were well received by our hosts, the Abdoelrahman family. We spent an enjoyable two days there and explored the former plantation trail along the river, before returning to Paramaribo.
Following our return we booked a dolphin spotting trip that took us back to the mouth of the Commewijne river, where we saw the river dolphins, who came to inquire after those strange two-legged creatures in boats!
