- Is this the most overrated weapon in Terraria? The Vampire Knives. In this video, I take a look at this post-plantera life stealing melee weapon which can be obtained from the Crimson Chest in the Dungeon. It has a history of been one of the most powerful weapons in the game, does this still stand in Terraria 1.4?

There is a weapon that little people know about that is a combo of the thorn Chakram and Vampire knives. It’s called the Fruitcake Chakram and has a 0.63% drop chance from presents. It does 14 damage, 8 knock back, and has a 4% crit chance. I think it’s worthy of being a video itself.
I like to think of vampire knives as a tool, I think they are a terrible primary weapon, but are extremely helpful as a secondary when you are at low health.
Especially against crawltipedes, they are pretty sick against the pillars
Ikr! Crawltipedes are the best enemies to use the Vampire Knives on, since you deal hundreds of damage on that mob, so every time a Crawldipede comes on-screen, it's pretty much an instant-recover
True! Vampire knives are more like secondary, it's good when your about to die and your potion is on cooldown
They’re the equivalent of the golden shower. You wouldn’t use it for its dps but rather the debuff it gives
@@gamgoose There are times I've used the golden shower as the main weapon. IE against wyverns. But I'm still relatively new to mage.
@@mengoinggodsway9024 if your still pre mechs use the Sky fracture, and be sure to get the Rainbow rod ASAP after “Twins” it’ll carry you through post golem.
It isn’t overrated especially because it is connected to the tankiest class in terraria, it makes Melee characters borderline invincible with the right setup(except against moonlord)
And of course, coming from a melee weapon that crosses the whole screen. See that gnome over there? He’s my third health bar now.
What truly makes any class "invincible" is being able to dodge correctly. Tanking really doesn't work on master+
Defense still gives a player an ability to take one or two hits on FTW-master but you really shouldn't rely on these knifes healing 500 in a moment.
They help with chip damage I guess, but so do healing potions and they're much better at that too.
They do not work on bosses and the best they can do is nulify dot effects.
If we're talking about expert or (god forgive me) normal mode then they're pretty much downgrade of what you can get at the time and yet again, they do no heal enough to be worth it as you can't deal enough damage with knifes.
So yeah... they are overrated. They used to be busted back when 1.2 released, sure, but after they got nerfed into the ground they became a fart in a really cool looking chest.

I get that some damage can be pretty hard to avoid or straight up unavoidable but yet again there is defense that can let you tank a hit and healing potions.
Normal mode enemies deal 100 damage at their best so like... yeah. By that point a freaking shadow spear can do the trick.
@@d4cto with the correct setup you can tank every master mode boss except moonlord until you've beaten him enough for the solar armour although in this build vampire knives become useless as it's instead based on invincibility frames so it's a more cheesy tank build

Vampire Knives are a great survivability weapon, but the Scourge is extremely underrated

You're seeing them as an offensive weapon when they're supposed to be a support weapon, like the golden shower. The healing is amazing as there's (like you said) only 2 other weapons that heal you. Use it as a weapon when you're in a tough spot, but not as your main weapon.
Or, if ur on multiplayer, facetank the boss with them and let ur friends do the job for u

2 hearts per second is equal to one Super Healing potion's worth of healing in 5 seconds, great for recovering from that hit you really didn't want to take (unless it's phantasmal deathray because moon bite)

He forgot the life drain, it's a very good underrated mage weapon. Kills groups in good time and is very satisfying, especially against multi-parted enemies like worms and some bosses. And it can go through walls at close range always but long range only sometimes.
Remember when they were first introduced in 1.2 and you could sit atop plantera with turtle armor and these knives and slowly kill it while it did nothing to you?
Top 5 memories of this game for sure, really miss turtle armor being the best lol

back then you could also set up a bed and a nimbus cloud in the jungle and wait for plantera to kill itself in the cloud while you respawned over and over, since it didn't despawn after killing you
1.2 bosses are kinda boring except ocram
Fun fact also, melee speed increases the velocity of the knives, not the rate of fire. However this doesn’t make melee speed useless, it allows the knives to travel further before their damage drops off. Because life steal is a fraction of dealt damage, you can get more lifesteal at range with a higher melee speed stat. Handy for using the knives at range like they are intended.
They are actually surprisingly good, obviously not a good primary but I have beaten duke by mostly just using these to regen and deal damage and it surprisingly worked, but it certainly took a while, other weapons do deal more damage, but it’s really good utility, a quick heal if you’re low
Even with the nerfs, they are still incredibly powerful. The healing from them is equal to using a greater healing potion every 5 seconds. That's all I'm gonna say.
Before the valhalla+knight helmet armor nerf, with this was insane the ammount of hp reg since only 100 above dmg was enough to give you trouble in recovering
They are hot garbage, worm scarf alone makes corruption a better choice, and the scourge does insane damage
@@surr3ald3sign acually brain of confusion and worm scarf round up to save the same amount of hp. but i prefer brain of confusion becasue it can save you from a finishing hit. ofc worm scarf is equally as viable, but aginst high dps boss the dps reduce is deffinetly worse.

@@surr3ald3sign brain of confusion is better since its buff. statistically, you're preventing the same amount of damage, while instead of tanking, dodging and preventing on-hit status conditions as well. it's been better for a while too.

As someone who tried to get a DESERT key for over 5 hours when 1.4 dropped, only for it to drop randomly in a world I didn't need it later while just building a desert build, I'm a little upset by that fact.
i literally never knew the vampire knives got a nerf, but i still think they are best biome chest 100%

@@gregoryf4186 that healing comes in clutch still, and can be used even in end game unlike desert and corruption, also desert is only good as a summoner, not worth it for any other class, where as vamp knives can be useful to all classes due to its healing

i wouldn't call them overrated. sure, their damage isn't stellar but this weapon is stupidly easy to use.
if you take a nasty hit you can recover to full health in not much time at all- this makes getting hit much less punishing. this utility without eating your main damage output makes the vampire knives probably the single best defensive item in the game. that being said, spectre armour is also super busted.
in my experience life steal is either so bad it might as well not be there(see bat bat and various calamity weapons) or good enough that in the hands of a player who has at least a vague idea of what they're doing is near game breaking
Just casually put Devourer of Gods in the blender for THEIR essence.
This is a support weapon. With the Beetle Armor or Turtle Armor + Warding Accessories and a left click while remaining immobile, you can basically tank entire crowds. You can just farm the Hallow in a farm like your while clicking on the left click. It's pretty great. Not really overrated.
It is possible to get the knifes with the legendary modifier by finding them in the dungeon of a celebration mk10 world. If you have a key to spare it's definitely worth to have in the collection!
Id say they’re still a very good melee option especially if you want to be as tanks as you can, but scourge of the corruptor deals way better damage.
I loved this item back in 1.2, it was insanely overpowered to the point I could easily compare it's DPS to 1.3 endgame items like the Daybreak and the life steal could heal you back to the 500hp full if you landed 8 good hits.
I remember YEARS ago when i would just craft turtle armor and crimson key from crimson key mold and absolutely cheese plantera, just holding mouse 1 and standing still.
The next weapon you should talk about is the crystal storm. It can be obtained almost immediately after hard mode and can carry you up until Post-Plantera. It’s incredibly underrated and I wish it wasn’t. The only downside of it is that it doesn’t pierce.

@@simpcard6327 Not really just suck, its the damage it deals doesnt compare to enemies with two times the ammount of health and armored enemies just nerf your dmg to oblivion so, if you pair it with the ichor shower, maybe it wont be that bad

They’re great for summoner because they benefit from all the melee buffs you would use for your whips, you aren’t missing out on damage because you summons are still attacking, and they help compensate for summoners’ crippling defense stats
They are great as a secondary weapon, use something else for your main damage source and swap to them when you're low on hp to regen your health.
The weapon's honestly just a lot more fair now. It was completely broken when it was introduced and I totally didn't showcase its pre-nerf absurdity. It's a nice weapon to have in the toolkit if you desperately need healing and the spread of the attack isn't half-bad either I guess.
It's definitely become weaker, but it's still an incredibly cool weapon to use (esp when paired with a fire gauntlet)
I honestly dont even see many people talk about vampire knives, but I personally think its pretty strong, if you're decent at dodging you're basically invincible with it.

The way I see it, Vampire Knives have a very useful quirk, and the reason they’re so popular is because their use is mostly to take out large groups, and group fights are very common. Or at least that’s how I used them and they worked really well
I think the vampire knives are invaluable on melee. They are great for keeping you alive at longer ranges, which is incredible for the melee class. Especially going into 1.4.5, where true melee is a lot more common and getting close is almost required.
I use 'em in Calamity, and even in early 1.3 calamity had them nerfed to the ground but still saw them being one of the most powerful weapons for multiplayer, not to mention being upgradeable into even stronger versions for post-moonlord. For a melee tank, being able to lifesteal while constantly aggroing the boss AND their spawns with the extra knives is crucial for a lot of bosses in MP, especially death.
They are a great secondary weapon for when you have low health. I always use them in melee playthroughs and would 100% recommend
I consider vampire knives to be in a similar spot to the ray gun from cod zombies, where they’re both iconic but most people won’t go out of their way to use them anymore.

Vampires knives remain one of my absolute favorites weapons to use on a Summoner, especially with Flasks of Ichor. Swapping to a whip every few seconds to keep the damage buff on is really all you need as far as dps goes, since your minions are your main source for that. The Knives with a flask on then provide a really effective way to keep Ichor stacked on bosses while making up for your weaker armor with life steal.
It's a great weapon for survivability, but it's counterpart, the Scourge of Corruptor is alot better than the Vamp Knives in terms of dps because of it's homing projectiles. Either way nice video very informative!
I've been doing a melee/ranged/summoner multi class sort of build lately and I'm finding them amazing. The trick for healing is to make sure every single knife lands on an enemy almost every throw, with 85 def I can literally stand still inside of golem and just use the knives and stay at full HP, I only have +6% melee speed.
It's okay for some other bosses, right now I'm throwing bodies at the Empress of light (night) and getting around 3/4 of her health bar, mainly using the knives with an ichor flask, vortex beater (ichor bullets), and 3 segment stardust Dragon. The healing is still surprisingly good at stage 1 you just have to stay really close to her (solve for her sprite height against the knife spread), and then it starts to fall behind in stage 2.
For crowd control though you're absolutely correct, its damage output on any one individual enemy is pretty abysmal unless you stack damage modifiers, although I found that that can be helpful for the lunar pillars or any boss battle that has minions. If you're good with mob training then you can keep them around as a "stockpile", focusing on the boss until you need health when you just point at your crowd and click, as long as you can keep dodging the boss you can recover a good couple hundred HP pretty quickly.

You should talk about the unholy trident. Genuinely the best magic weapon at the point when you get it and I don't see anyone talking about it.
I love to use the knives in my tank build for when I’m playing multiplayer, especially with a mage who can provide additional healing. This allows me to to take all aggro and simply tank all the damage allowing my team to just focus on dps

Do you know what I want back? The OLD Shadow Beam Staff! Infinite piercing WITH NO damage fall off the more enemies you hit! My God do I miss it

And about the knives, the feel like a weapon you would use to quickly regenerate health (still quite useless since potions exist).

I’d say they’re mostly useful and retain their reputation as a backup, really only being pulled out of the player is around or under half health
I remember using these against Golem on mobile before 1.3. Always used them since. Nice to see that someone else recognizes that this weapon is actually amazing
I feel like I used to see it used and talked about more in the older versions before 1.4. And, I always pick the Corruption because of... well, it's the original evil.
They aren’t supposed to be a primary damage source, just a backup to switch to when at low health, although I do tend to use them alone against those Martian saucer bosses because the second phase and those damn lasers
If you're planning on calamity content, the emperian knives (something like that) might fit your channel. Basically better Vampire Knives
I got three keys on my expert mode playthrough, two of them were hallowed😔 but the other one was the crimson key which carried me straight through lunatic cultist and helped me kill eol pre moonlord
Life drain with a side of melee
I managed to complete a playthrough with them as my final weapon and I would recommend them all the way up until moon lord. You want to keep your distance during that fight and I actually needed to learn more about his attacks, as to when it's safe to get up close for more damage with them
I feel like they fall of on the higher difficulties where you take tons of damage per attack. On lower difficulties they are great though.

Vamp Knives are a safe option with no real drawbacks. They don't deal the most damage in comparison to other weapons on tier, however the utility they do offer with the life steal more than make up for the damage. I would still recommend using higher dps weapons for main damage and using vamp for support, of course.
See the vampire knives are great and all, but I like Scourge of the Corruptor...

They are good in certain scenarios. In my most recent 4 person expert playthrough I was using them almost constantly as the melee tank character, taking all the boss damage while other classes hung back and did damage. Single target damage isn’t to bad either. Due to a lapse in communication both the frost moon and EOL were spawned in and while the other players were messing about trying not to die constantly I managed to do 1/4 damage without dropping below -2 hearts. They’re a great weapon with below average damage but great utility. Not overrated
I never really felt like I needed a life stealing weapon as a melee user considering how easily it is to get a regeneration build and the frequency of dropped hearts from enemies. Keeping the Hand of Creation equipped or a heartreach potion is plenty
They're great for clinging to life in the harder battles and have very respectable DPS. However a lot of the time the effort put in to get the knives is way more trouble than they're worth. Usually, I only grind out the knives for the clout and fun of using the weapons themselves but rarely out of necessity.
As a non main weapon it’s still really good. Like you said at the start there are only 3 weapons with actual lifesteal
tbh I like the scourge of the corruptor more due to the homing. I find it quite underatted.

It’s a massive crutch, but it’s also almost necessary to use for how the class is intended to be use, it’s a parasitic-symbiotic relationship
When I used to play terraria on mobile, a friend gave me his vampire knives just after I beat the mechanical bosses.
I literally stood still when I killed plantera.
Later, when I was playing the 3ds version, I couldn't beat plantera without them, so I had to use Heart Arrows.
The vampire knives work much better as a secondary weapon for when you get low in a boss fight rather than a primary weapon that you would use for dps or fighting regular enemies
With the crossnecklace and good armor, you can literally just shoot up at golem. That’s nice but golem is pretty easy anyway, for such a hard weapon to get. I think it’s good for crowds
On all 3 playthorughs of terraria, ive always gotten a corruption or crimson key early hardmode to post mech
when making the mob farm pls remember to add a jungle biome as it boosts spawnrates, add a water candle, add some jungle torches, add a gnome and you should be good

for my first Expert Mode foray I ended up getting the Crimson Key from my Ichor farm while stocking up on Ichor Flasks and it made for a fantastic backup tool for when I got really low in the tougher fights and my potion cooldown was still running. Came in clutch for not dying a dozen times on the pillars and when I'd been going for a long while on the Pumpkin Moons while farming up the last few Zenith components
I spent about an hour trying to get a megaphone from some pixies and found a key within the first 10 minutes.
My hallow was also close to a desert so when running back and forth to get pixies to spawn I got a desert key.
How did you manage to turn the knives into a machine gun during frost moon?
One of the important things to note is that the weapon's functionality comes from its synergy with the rest of the character's set up. Because of the life steal, the player can focus more on attributes like damage output and immunity frames, allowing for the life steal to make up any lost defense. Against normal enemies, using banners is a very good way to make the knives viable for events and whatnot. I wouldn't say it's overrated, rather situational given how unique the weapon is
I think the fact that the final boss has an attack meant to specifically counter this weapon (and spectre hood, which has a similar story of nerfs), it gives lifesteal as a whole an OP reputation, even after every other aspect of lifesteal tools gets nerfed to mediocrity.
Meanwhile I play a tribrid build, and these things have been the clincher in EVERY close call I've had.
0:20 It's exclusive the the dungeon in crimson worlds, not the same as being exclusive to the crimson biome.

I remember when the vampire knives were really powerful and they could have been a substitute for the Terra blade even maybe better
Pro tip: If you are fighting Solar Pillar, kill Crawltipede using vampire knifes, when you are hitting it, you are healling yourself 10 times more than normal.

I know it's not specifically a crimson key but I built a cavern layer jungle/crimson volcano farm. About 5 minutes later jungle key drops.... And about 20 minutes after that got my second
I once got the crimson key from a crimson I made cuz I wanted brain of confusion, the place was like 1 sky island and maybe some blocks on the left or right, the drop was insane.
EoSD being one of the first video games I played, I feel like I just love this weapon for being a nostalgic touhou reference rather than it being a good weapon by itself.
I dunno if people consider this cheating but if I’m doing a melee playthrough I’ll go to the effort of getting both a crimson and corruption key and getting both (I’ll create another temporary world, rush Plantera, and get whichever one I need, then delete the world). I just love both weapons so much. In my opinion, scourge is a much better primary, while having the knives as a secondary is awesome if I need some health in a sticky situation.
My way of farming biome keys is to get the Jungle Temples and farm some Solar Fragments
Then summon a Solar Eclipse near my Arena after making an artificial biome of the desired key I want... works pretty well due to the high amount of enemies during the Solar Eclipse
What me an my brother have done to get biome keys, is build 2 convertor belts come together and summoned a pumpkin moon since the keys have a higher drop rate from bosses (I think)
Even as someone who doesn't like using them and actually doesn't really use them at all, I can safely say that no, I don't think they're particularly overrated. It's as with everything, just testing them in a vacuum doesn't really show how they're actually used by people. As a straight replacement in a build not meant for them, they're pretty trash, but if you actually know what you're doing even a little, they can be a literal life saver. I for one find them useful because I tend to go for high damage less defense builds while lacking a philosopher's stone. If I need to heal and my regen isn't enough, vampire knives would be the only way. Especially because I also happen to despise using the nurse.

I think people always over exaggerate how bad the Vampire Knives nerf was. Before the nerf, it was insane, maybe the best Melee weapon in the game. The Vampire Knives just about invalidated every other weapon available paired with its good damage and very high lifesteal rate.
After the nerf, it’s reasonable, but they’re still excellent. You can’t get away with soloing things with Vampire Knives anymore, but it functions as a utility weapon for the rest of the game after Plantera. It’s best used in conjunction with other weapons, and only truly struggles on Moon Lord, where the game literally had to implement a debuff designed to disable it and Spectre armor due to how powerful they’d be otherwise. Scourge of Corruptor will always be the worse of the two Evil key weapons, not because its damage is worse, but simply because Life Steal is so valuable that it makes Vampire Knives viable for the rest of the game after you get them. With decent dodging skills, post-nerf Vampire Knives can still make you nearly invincible, especially since Melee has the best defenses in the game

It sucks as a weapon but is excellent as a utility. If you still have potion sickness for example but your health is low, you can throw out some knives to clutch the fight.
Judging the vampire knives by DPS is kinda missing the point of the vampire knives. The reason they're so great is the life steal, they're a side arm you swap to when your health is getting low, the only time I actually use the vampire knives as a weapon is when I'm taking tons of damage and want to keep myself constantly topped off

The vampire knives got me all the way through from plantera to moon lord on my very first full playthrough. They're still the best to me no matter what.
I once dropped 4 crimson keys in one day, and the best part it is it was always accidental because i never felt the need to get vamp knives so i never farmed for the key. I've never dropped one since
The Vampire Knives been my favourite weapon for like forever, in fact it's the main reason why I prefer crimson over corruption. It also helped me a ton in my FTW playthrough, the ability to just swap a weapon real quick that heals you to full life is so broken. Still a fantastic weapon to this day!
The healing potential for this is so good that I even use it in my calamity playthroughs. Right now I'm post moonlord in one and I can still make use of it's healing by switching over mid boss fight to heal, and then going back to my dps weapon. It's dwarfed my use of healing potions at this point
idk man, i’m only just now coming back to Terraria after a long time but these things CARRIED me through 1.2 when i was 12 :) ofc i didn’t have them as my primary weapon but they were a great tool to switch to when health started dwindling. PS its weird not seeing a crimson key mold haha
