See now that I know of the key brand it may replace the fettered bagnads for me, I run the Regeneration build in the late game so something like that seems like a good thing for me but I shall test. Great video!
Against Fishron, there is actually somehing you can use. Shield of Cthulhu. Upon striking an enemy, it both does damage and awards I-frames, making it a counter against boss dash attacks or stunlocks. Queen Bee in pre-hardmode, awarding I-frames against Destroyer or Skeletron to grapple out of attacks with minumum harm, et cetra.
The Keybrand is incredibly underrated. It has an incredible effect. Once you have hit an enemy or even if an enemy is hurt it deals so much damage. That + the legendary reforge can make one really powerful weapon. I used it until I got the influx waver.
Considering I'm something of an expert when in comes to Kingdom Hearts, I've been using the Keybrand even before the buffs it got in 1.4. It's a solid choice, even against the Lunar Pillars.
Love your videos man - Some people on here not understanding you’re just showing what each weapon does and nothing more. Haha they are funny - Good work Sockrteez 👍🏻
I would love to see them rework either of these weapons so they become more usable. Breaker Blade can get a wide yet slow sweeping animation that can deal big damage to larger enemies or easily take out smaller groups of other enemies. Hell they can even change it so you can charge it up and deal like 1.5k damage with a single large sweep. The Keybrand has a much longer weapon size as to poke enemies from a distance. The swinging animation also alternates between wide and narrow strikes. I'd also personally give the Keybrand an afterimage effect that trails behind each swing and does 33% less damage.
honestly, i've been wanting to see true melee getting a buff with something like that. the new melee re-work is nice, but i do hope they look at some underpowered melees (like these ones), the slash is an actually good idea, since it's pretty much a massive range buff and a good directional attack.
Keybla-ehem, brand, is my melee option despite being a ranger, for easier mobs and times when melee is unavoidable, I think I added extra knockback so the speed keeps most things just far enough away. I wouldnt do this on a melee specific character, but for mine its nice.
I remember the first time I beat Wall Of Flesh and all I got was the Breaker Blade and an Emblem. I was a little upset because the damage was lower than the Nights Edge that I had been using. That was in 1.3 though, so maybe I’ll give it another shot.
in terraria mobile version back in like 2017, I accidentally got breaker blade from my first ever WOF kill. I then proceed to use that bad boy for he rest of my playthrough and refuse to switch to a stronger weapon. My next playthroughs though, i haven't got any luck and never got breaker blade again :(
1.4.4 makes me love these weapons, now Breaker Blade is an amazing Pre-Mech True Melee, and now not only does the Keybrand get more dmg, but in the secret seed is obtainable Pre-Boss, which makes it amazing until atleast EoW/BoC since it deals about 30/45 dmg with its bonus. Amazing.
It reminds me of how much I LOVE to play melee, being a tanky beast is so fun, but pre hardmode and early hardmode is ANNOYING. However once you unlock the good swords it becomes so much easier.
I pretty much always end up using the breaker blade to farm the hallow at the beginning of hard mode, i like it a lot actually. Keybrand i don't think ive ever used but i haven't played in a long time so with these changes its probably good for something now.
I always liked the breaker blade. Its knockback keeps you safe in early hardmode, which is something that can't be said for the laser rifle or the clockwork assault rifle.
I hope a reliable melee weapon against Wall of Flesh will be added to Terraria someday. In expert and master mode the only option to beat it as melee is cheesing with starfury and super low arena (so projectiles don't get blocked by the ceiling).
the melee weapons without projectiles are best for invasions so if your in multiplayer and your doing an invasion it can help them get their guns and you can tank ranged attacks since your a melee and shields nullifies the knockback
I tried out the keybrand while I was grinding in the dungeon earlier, and it's starting to become one of my favorite melee weapons. I do kinda want it to get reworked to have a bigger and cooler swing like the night's edge did recently, but as it is right now, I appreciate it for what it is. The kill effects are cool too.
the breaker in specific feels like it shows just how good melee is for hordes, its so easy to bully hordes safely with it especially when paired with a flail in case you need to deal with range
As someone who played a true melee playthrough, these two can be of incredible help against bosses. I used breaker blade, excalubur and the keyblade for most of hardmode and it worked incredibly well.
The key brand is actually my go-to melee weapon in the late game if I'm running mage or ranger, as I like to keep a very fast projectile-less sword on those classes in case I need it.
Why? It seems that it would be better to keep a projectile weapon. You wouldnt change your playstyle, just that a resource isnt used. And for mages mana isnt really a problem and ive never had issues with ammo as a ranger. Like the biggest thing is, why get close when there are equally damaging alternatives that let you stay at a range?
As the dedicated melee warrior in playthroughs with my siblings, Keybrand was prolly my goto weapon in exploring the dungeon and I have no idea why, it was probably because of how fast it was and how I could destroy projectiles that would otherwise kill me in the dungeon, other than that I am happy that its getting recognition despite it not being a great boss weapon. Its pretty good for mobbing and general killing of regular mobs.
I remember while doing a mage run i got a breaker blade just threw it away Now doing melee and i decided "Sure why not" It really helped me deal with alot of enemies at once early hardmode
in calamity iirc true melee weapons (doesn't shoot projectiles or shoot only upon hitting an enemy) do get boosted very heavily, making them kind of powerful even with melee weapons that do shoot projectiles
Believe it or not, the breaker blade is my favourite wall of flesh weapon. There are so many insanely good ranged weapons at the start of hardmode, making the clockwork assault rifle not effective for very long. The laser rifle deals not too good knockback and the firecracker is mostly just your standard whip that gives you slight more control over summons and more damage in a summoner playthrough. But the breaker blade is incredibly useful because for its decent base damage paired with its special ability of more damage on first hit. This, paired with its range and insane kb makes it a perfect weapon for navigating the caves since they are in quite an enclosed space.
idk I feel like you are underrating the Firecracker, as no other whip competes with it early hardmode especially with the Sanguine Staff. But hey, you are entitled to your opinion
Yeah, they aren't the most practical in vanilla. But i always take em anyways because there's still some potential/use to em. HOWEVER, That's just vanilla Terraria. Have you heard of the acclaimed Terraria Overhaul Mod on the Tmodloader platform? Ill make a quick rundown in case you don't know. It basically rework the entire mechanics(movement,combat,ect...) from the game while keeping progression intact. It also increase the difficulty a bit. This mod is pure insanity! Here are the 3 major changes for melee combat : -A heavy strike will send you forward in the direction of your mouse even more than a regular, and will deal more dammage if the ennemy is low on health -Your mouse position is taken into account for where your hit.Which mean running backwards while swinging backward is possible, but also that the ennemy on the opposite side of your hit will not get hit by the beginning of your attack. -THE DAMMAGE OF YOUR SWINGS WILL BE INCREASED BASED ON YOUR CURRENT VELOCITY WITH UP TO 3x DAMMAGE BONUS! These changes makes True melee an excellent Burst class with good DMG trade potential. Oh and btw entities velocity is uncapped in this mod.So there is some huge janky cheesy strats :D Realy tho if you haven't tried it and you run terraria on more than a potato chip.I highly recommend you'll give it a try.You can even disable some mechanics if you don't like em.
I actually always thought that the Breaker Blade was a little better than the Night's Edge, so I didn't mind getting it in a melee playthrough. But the keybrand is more of a meme for me...
The reason I never used them is because I only played terraria on mobile around 2016. My basis for choosing weapons is the damage output and how cool it looks. Never really understood those effects til now
I rolled the Breaker Blade on a random weapon challenge playthrough, to fight Queen Slime! It's honestly quite good, and after you enter phase 2, her flying puts her in the exact range to be clipped by the blade if you jump while running. Not the easiest thing to use, but quite decent.
I found keybrand to be particularly good at finishing off bosses or going in at specific phases of bossfights. If you get good enough at swapping between weapons mid-fight and maneuvering through projectiles, it's a great way to either quickly finish off a boss or get in a few really meaty hits towards the later part of boss fights. I actually finished off the Moonlord in my first complete playthrough by occasionally switching to keybrand, doing an all out blitz attack at the final few portions of HP knowing I was running out of resources. If used strategically, it's a fantastic pocket weapon
Honestly, these weapons as well as many of the other fast swinging melees without projectiles always seemed better suited on Ranger than Melee to me, they help with the few situations where you either run out of ammo while exploring or a group of enemies closes the gap and lets you keep them at bay. Though this applies more to the breaker blade as its huge reach and ability to setup enemies for, say, a good onix blaster shot, is really useful.
They've shown now that true excalibur and true night's edge are getting changed in 1.4.4 to be more close ranged and are rebalancing multiple other swords. I wonder how many melee weapons will get reworked?
i think the main reason Breaker Blade and Keybrand (mostly Keybrand) isn't exactly because everyone thinks they're terrible, but mostly because by the time we get to them, we either already smth better, or we just see no use for it. Keybrand is the embodiment of this, being in the same progression stage as swords like Influx Waver, Pumpkin Sword, Terrablade, etc.
Melee weapons like these are my favorite. Even dedicated a challenge run of MMFTW to them. (though spears that also didnt fire projectiles were used like dark lance and journey was used to reduce grinding) In fact, the best true melee weapon for WoF is the beekeeper. The bees can knockback the hungry even in higher difficulties, which will allow you to do maximum damage to the wall. Wish it got more love.
I think they should give weapons like this special moves. Like if you dash with the the breaker blade it can do multiple, fast slices, slash they enemies into the air, and smash em back down. Somthing like that. A dash with the key blade could elongate it doing a piercing attack forward for high damage. Just more options of moves and potentially added invisibility frames
The keybrand can go realy well with a tank setup and attack speed and being reforged to legendary it becomes a unit for group of enemies and bosses that stay more in the place like the lunatic cultist golem.
Breaker Blade also has the hilarious resprite for the comically large spoon meme on Steam so arguably it's much more fun and absolutely hilarious just to use it on PVP just for the fact that your are killing your enemies and or friends with an absurdly large spoon XD
The firecracker (also wof drop) is also really cool for super early hardmode if it’s ur first time playing and u dont really care if you use the wrong weapon for a class then this is for you! You can also use it on cave walls to see what’s inside!
from my experience the breaker blade was PLENTY for hardmode, due to it's built in gimmick of having extra damage to unhurt enemies it was able to take care of most early hard mode threats with relative ease
Break combined with the shield parry buff and critical hit can one shot any non miniboss enemy and severely damage tougher/tankier ones on first hit. Its stacking 5x damage on top of 2x crit chance which usually at this stage of game is decent. Can obliterate if not severely damage enemies if your good at parrying.
Melee, besides tanking in multiplayer and using Yo-Yo's, feels like it's lacking some love and fun/satisfaction value, and that's not even talking about true melee, that feels like condensed masochism to another level.
If i remember i had sometime manage to make the key brand deal a total of 2300 damage in a single crit on an injured golem, wich is mental for a post plantera weapon
I actually really like the Keybrand myself while I first obtained it in Mobile terraria 1.2.1 it's still been one drop that gives me a smile when it happens

the third and fourth flaw are the main problems with the weapon though
the main gimmick of the weapon is that it deals more damage against low hp targets, but that doesn't matter if it takes like 50 hits to get it low, ignoring defense hitting a moon lord at half hp would do as much damage as hitting a slime at half hp and it takes alot more to get moon lord to half

@@shogunbreaker_ true melee really needed that buff though. i would never use true melee weapons in vanilla because i can get hit less if i have a projectile and that leads to me killing more things. also projectile melee weapons still have teh melee hitbox so they can out damage most true melee weapons in true melee range.
See now that I know of the key brand it may replace the fettered bagnads for me, I run the Regeneration build in the late game so something like that seems like a good thing for me but I shall test. Great video!

“I’m running a few melee accessories”
Has an entire set of the best melee armor in the game equipped.
Also complains about knockback, while not using an obsidian shield, which is pretty much one of the most useful accessories.
I used it until I got the influx waver.
fun fact I beat all of the hardmode bosses with the fetid baghnakhs before the patch
I always use the breaker blade through early to mid hardmode, amazing weapon in my opinion.
This is my first time finding out about their new abilities lol. I still only remembered them as their 1.3 selves. Good to know
I would love to see them rework either of these weapons so they become more usable.
@@jax8920 Probably in terraria 2
Keybla-ehem, brand, is my melee option despite being a ranger, for easier mobs and times when melee is unavoidable, I think I added extra knockback so the speed keeps most things just far enough away. I wouldnt do this on a melee specific character, but for mine its nice.
Keybrand? More like Keybland!
My next playthroughs though, i haven't got any luck and never got breaker blade again :(
I've always had a lot of fun with the Breaker Blade, but I don't use the Keybrand very much because of other weapons being available
Amazing.
1:05 Nearly chocked wall of flesh
*proceeds to have the best equipment in the game*
It reminds me of how much I LOVE to play melee, being a tanky beast is so fun, but pre hardmode and early hardmode is ANNOYING. However once you unlock the good swords it becomes so much easier.
maybe it's easier because it's not melee? just a thought
@@cian729 still melee damage so still melee class
@@cloamker2533 guess I can't argue with that
I pretty much always end up using the breaker blade to farm the hallow at the beginning of hard mode, i like it a lot actually.
"i used some accessories" uses full solar flare armor and the best melee damage accessories
the melee weapons without projectiles are best for invasions so if your in multiplayer and your doing an invasion it can help them get their guns and you can tank ranged attacks since your a melee and shields nullifies the knockback
I love the breaker blade with size modifiers
I tried out the keybrand while I was grinding in the dungeon earlier, and it's starting to become one of my favorite melee weapons. I do kinda want it to get reworked to have a bigger and cooler swing like the night's edge did recently, but as it is right now, I appreciate it for what it is. The kill effects are cool too.
the breaker in specific feels like it shows just how good melee is for hordes, its so easy to bully hordes safely with it especially when paired with a flail in case you need to deal with range
True Melee should have invincibility frames if you strike just before getting hit. Maybe also do bonus damage. "Parrying" if you will.
I remember while doing a mage run i got a breaker blade just threw it away
Now doing melee and i decided
"Sure why not"
It really helped me deal with alot of enemies at once early hardmode
I used the Keybrand for some time in a Calamity Expert Run and it was pretty solid tbh.
If you're true melee there are MUCH better true melee options, like the gungnir.
@@skyral4137 That may be true tho, and i just said my own experiences, so i don't really need those advices xd
Can't wait for 1.4.4 where the true Excalibur and nights edge get a non projectile rework
in calamity iirc true melee weapons (doesn't shoot projectiles or shoot only upon hitting an enemy) do get boosted very heavily, making them kind of powerful even with melee weapons that do shoot projectiles
melee in itself got a big buff but there are true melee specific accessories and armor sets that make true melee actually worth doing.
I think that the non-projectile based melee weapons could be revived,if while swinging it you could cut or neglect any projectiles.
"That thing was too big to be called a sword. Too big, too thick, too heavy, and too rough, it was more like a large hunk of iron."
@@darkstroyor yeah good point
Yeah, they aren't the most practical in vanilla. But i always take em anyways because there's still some potential/use to em.
HOWEVER, That's just vanilla Terraria.
Have you heard of the acclaimed Terraria Overhaul Mod on the Tmodloader platform?
Ill make a quick rundown in case you don't know.
It basically rework the entire mechanics(movement,combat,ect...) from the game while keeping progression intact. It also increase the difficulty a bit. This mod is pure insanity!
Here are the 3 major changes for melee combat :
-A heavy strike will send you forward in the direction of your mouse even more than a regular, and will deal more dammage if the ennemy is low on health
-Your mouse position is taken into account for where your hit.Which mean running backwards while swinging backward is possible, but also that the ennemy on the opposite side of your hit will not get hit by the beginning of your attack.
-THE DAMMAGE OF YOUR SWINGS WILL BE INCREASED BASED ON YOUR CURRENT VELOCITY WITH UP TO 3x DAMMAGE BONUS!
These changes makes True melee an excellent Burst class with good DMG trade potential.
Oh and btw entities velocity is uncapped in this mod.So there is some huge janky cheesy strats :D
Realy tho if you haven't tried it and you run terraria on more than a potato chip.I highly recommend you'll give it a try.You can even disable some mechanics if you don't like em.
"The constant barrage of shots delay my killing cause I can't get close"
*ahem* cobalt shield *ahem*
I actually always thought that the Breaker Blade was a little better than the Night's Edge, so I didn't mind getting it in a melee playthrough.
But the keybrand is more of a meme for me...
keybrand will probably be one of my go to weapons for a true melee playthrough when i do it
The reason I never used them is because I only played terraria on mobile around 2016. My basis for choosing weapons is the damage output and how cool it looks. Never really understood those effects til now
they are more about dealing with groups of enemies rather than a boss with high health which is also true for most non-projectile melee weapons
I rolled the Breaker Blade on a random weapon challenge playthrough, to fight Queen Slime!
It's honestly quite good, and after you enter phase 2, her flying puts her in the exact range to be clipped by the blade if you jump while running.
Not the easiest thing to use, but quite decent.
only noticed you weren't a huge channel when i hit subscribe, great quality videos. keep it up!
Thanks man! I appreciate the sub :)
"Non projectile based melee weapons are renowned for being under-powered"
Nights Edge during pre-hard mode, Solar Erruption hard mode *cries*
Though this applies more to the breaker blade as its huge reach and ability to setup enemies for, say, a good onix blaster shot, is really useful.
the two terraria references that appear in smash.
The problem is enemies OP damage, You can't melee without taking damage, and if just a few hits kill you...
They've shown now that true excalibur and true night's edge are getting changed in 1.4.4 to be more close ranged and are rebalancing multiple other swords. I wonder how many melee weapons will get reworked?
Just seen this! Let’s hope the breaker blade gets a buff
i think the main reason Breaker Blade and Keybrand (mostly Keybrand) isn't exactly because everyone thinks they're terrible, but mostly because by the time we get to them, we either already smth better, or we just see no use for it. Keybrand is the embodiment of this, being in the same progression stage as swords like Influx Waver, Pumpkin Sword, Terrablade, etc.
Just subbed. I really enjoy your videos. They're very high quality and very entertaining. Keep at it bro.
Thanks man! I’m glad your enjoying the vids, I appreciate it!

Melee weapons like these are my favorite. Even dedicated a challenge run of MMFTW to them. (though spears that also didnt fire projectiles were used like dark lance and journey was used to reduce grinding)
In fact, the best true melee weapon for WoF is the beekeeper.
I've seen a few people beat true melee empress of light with keybrand
My first strictly melee playthrough I got the breaker blade. It's not great on bosses but it's damn good on events and general use.
Breaker Blade also has the hilarious resprite for the comically large spoon meme on Steam so arguably it's much more fun and absolutely hilarious just to use it on PVP just for the fact that your are killing your enemies and or friends with an absurdly large spoon XD
0:36 the reach on this thing is what makes it worthwhile
Keybrand is for when duke fishron is changing phases
So technically duel wielding keybrand and breakerblade could be pretty neat
The firecracker (also wof drop) is also really cool for super early hardmode if it’s ur first time playing and u dont really care if you use the wrong weapon for a class then this is for you! You can also use it on cave walls to see what’s inside!
Firecracker is one of the best whips in the game, because it synergies very well with blade and sanguine staff
from my experience the breaker blade was PLENTY for hardmode, due to it's built in gimmick of having extra damage to unhurt enemies it was able to take care of most early hard mode threats with relative ease
Knock back reducing items could help with your struggle to get close to projectile shooting enemies.
With true melee getting a showcase in the new update, these things will likely be the pinnacle of their tier.
Shyguymask defeated Fishron using Keybrand in one of his videos. I think it's called "Is true Melee bad?" or something like that.
"Kingdom Hearts?"
"Kingdom Hearts."
"Kingdom Hearts."
The irony of two iconic characters known for their amazing strength, whose terraria reference weapon are being deemed worthless
If i remember i had sometime manage to make the key brand deal a total of 2300 damage in a single crit on an injured golem, wich is mental for a post plantera weapon
For the keybrand, be as tanky as you can, wound the enemy with a normal weapon, then slap with keybrand turning it into a DPS contest
I actually really like the Keybrand myself while I first obtained it in Mobile terraria 1.2.1 it's still been one drop that gives me a smile when it happens
I used the breaker blade and I didn't even know at that point that some melee weapons fired projectiles.
