I initially thought my locals was doing fine (30ish people) until I realized that half the attendance wasn't even playing yugioh, they were playing magic... 💀
While I agree that this game is seeing a steady decline, Cancun is a major outlier as far as the data goes.
I think what's more concerning is that Konami didnt cancel the event while there was a record-shattering hurricane going on. Like, that didn't really hit me until my boi Evan pointed that out. That could've been awful.
I dont play tcg so when people talk about the cost Im always like "ok. Expensive. It wasnt till i spent money on a non-IAP that i realized how insane it is. I bought Sparking Zero's deluxe edition for the cost of a SINGLE ENGRAVER! thank god for Master Duel. I have no idea how anyone would be able to get in without it

It was, and its why I haven't talked about it in a video. Cancun is an outlier.
Mbt talked about how while the format is bad, he believes the main reason for nobody showing up was because of the hurricane. Which makes sense
Not only hurricane alerts, but cancun is a known tourist trap location, everything is expensive and locals are actively trying to scam you with any service. Its pretty known between the competitive players circle as a horrible location for ycs, it always has low atendance from foreigners

- Cancún is expensive for the average mexican
- Americans that went last year had a bad time with scams
- There was a hurricane alert which doscouraged people even more. That same hurricane became level 5 and actually did a number in florida.
Like.... If you look at Niagara & Lille numbers (Lille was sold out in a single day), you can see game is doing well.

Current Master Duel isn't much better since Tenpai dropped i feel... I played 20 rounds today and all I played against was FTKs and Tenpai (in that order of play-rate).
So at the start of the year we had every locals hit 20+ players. A second locals was around 14-16. New players came in or returning players (with the Fire King Structure Deck and like Dogmatika and stuff). Throughout Phantom Nightmare nobody played Snake Eyes at the first store, but attendence went down and in the second locals it stayed the same with 1 guy who bought into the deck. With the release of Tenpai it took around 2 locals to have the first Friday Magic not fire at store 1 and store 2s attendence started going down as well. Many switched to Magic, and Pokemon. Tins came out, that was the first week neither locals fired. This weekend there was a magic qualifier and I talked to the store owners, they are considering doing a Pokemon locals, have yugioh be managed by someone else and try to minimize their supply for yugioh because Light of Destruction, INFO, Rota and the Tins just dont move.
I started going to locals earlier this year, little after Phantom Nightmare, stopped at Infinite Forbidden release.

I don't thing that someone has brought up this but at wcys cancun, People were buying left and right the side events, like we got to regional 70 when they stopped, the only event that got really played were the time wizards and 3v3, everything else was BOUGHT bye People, I saw someone leave with 10 playmats and 4 deckboxes god deam
I feel bad for my locals because the yugioh tournament organizer worked so hard to basically rebuild the yugioh tournament space in our area and make the store an ots after covid hit, and now with how the format and its price have panned out for over a year, on top of the hurricane that recently pulled a u-turn into FL and GA, locals for yugioh is in a grim space
I honestly feel like this is only a story people are talking about because the picture got shared all over the internet. I'd think if something like this happened 20 years ago then it wouldn't be a big deal. Now people are using it as false evidence that the game is dying.

The fact that I can build a competitive Beelzemon deck for half the price of one engraver is just insane price comparing between card games.
Isn't beelzemon getting horribly powercrept by the bt 18/19 decks? Also,digi has equal,y horrible powercreep and no reprint sets (reboot literally doesn't count) it may be cheap for a single deck. But in time, you are spending the same as yugi
@@vvv_vimeru668not really the deck got new support announced and it’s doing decently in JP. We are also getting synced globally for digimon so it’s a non issue for everyone.
The power level has gotten insane, to the point where playing anything which is not a meta deck is straight up a pain in the a**.
Engines are hella expensive, because every engine even remotely playable is max rarity.
If you are a budget (non-)player, you can't even play the best non-engine, as the mulcharmies alone are more than 500$.
I'd play the game, but I can't afford 3-400 dollars every three months to play with shiny cardboard, especially when I can play the same game ,basically, for free both on official and unofficial simulators.
I feel like it's only a matter of time before they nuke the game in a similar way to MR4. It's been a complete mess since 2022

Had to close my own store last year, was a good run but it wasnt making money

My favorite part about all this is that I've been not buying yugioh and not playing duel links or master duel and I've gotten better at gaming as a whole.
You all should try boycotting and letting the game die it's better off that way. I know you invest time and money into it but it's better off to accept your losses and just enjoy something else more enjoyable.

In my opinion is the even the game the issue anymore. It is just that people don’t have the money or time to play the game.
