01' Euro C5 Coupé 6mt owner here... Yes there are huge panel gaps, interior quality is terrible, some minor electrical issues but all fixable... everything is easily fixable here... But the looks...man... This car breaks lots of necks in Europe and It's taken as an exotic car, interior design looks very nice, pop up headlights are incredible and give huge personality to the car, the LS1 is rock solid.. can't say other than great words towards the C5! It just needs non runflat tires, coilovers, shortshift, na exh hack, cam and springs, a tune and you got a very agile and fast classic super sports car.
Great video and good information for anybody thinking about buying a C5. All your points were valid, but to a newby it sounded like alot of negatives. I bought my 2003 AE M6 in 2007 with 18,000 miles. It now has 50,000 miles. I have redone 7 of the 9 grounding points, repaired the EBCM, replaced the headlight motor gears with brass, replaced headlights with LED, changed the brake fluid, clutch fluid, changed oil and filter, and transmission fluid. I replaced the OEM exhaust with Z06 titaniums, replaced the interior lights with LED, changed the front/rear emblems, and installed a new hood seal and installed the CAGs eliminator and LMC5 column lock mod. I have done everything myself, thanks to You Tube. Only the AC work was done by a shop. If you are at all mechanically inclinded, you can do 90% of anything needed. I have taken it on many roadtrips including the 2019 Corvette Caravan, travelled over 7200 miles with not one hiccup. This is a great car, fun to drive, and the best sports car in America for the fun and money!!! Its 20 years old, and still gets looks and comments!
Being a former autotech I would say you are taking a bigger risk with a low miles vette, just letting a car sit is one of the worst things you can do. I want to see a good service record and a decent amount miles showing you drove the car and maintained the car. They made a ton of these it is not rare, drive it.
Great video! C5 z06 supercharged here, forged pistons, rods 750whp, absolute beast!!! These cars are timeless, clean lines and very easy car to work on yourself!!!!
I've had a C5 FRC for about 4 years... as far as running costs are concerned, my average is about $500 bucks a year. That really was about the first year or two of ownership. I had to put a new battery in it, new harmonic balancer, new O2 sensors, temp sensors, oil pressure sensor etc. After that first year, i'm not joking, maybe $200 a year for oil changes and other maintenance items. Now upgrades, lol, those are another story.
Good overview. The first two things I did upon purchasing my '03 M6 convertible were to install the CAGS bypass to kill the 1st to 4th gear forced shift and the LMC5 module to prevent the steering column lockup issue. The car is such a delight to drive - the "iron fist in a velvet glove"; as happy cruising to the store as it is in the tight twisties.
Great video. I have a 2003 Z06 bought in July 2014 with 20,000 miles. I bought it to drive, it now has just under 95,000. I've experienced several of the issues you mentioned. I repaired the climate control screen going dark with a small solder job. I just had the EBCM repaired for around $150. I took it out, sent it off, then reinstalled it this weekend. Now I have my ABS and Traction control back working. I love the C5 especially the Z06 and you're right about having a stick shift being so much more fun to drive than an auto.
I have a 2005 ram 1500 hemi and I say it's about 1500 a year in fixing something on it. I've replaced brakes pads roters uper and lower control arms cv joints wheel bearings multiple water pumps fuel lines fuel pump and the list goes on. With that said best truck I've ever owned. Good vehicles require maintenance at 20 years old.
Glad you like them! Thanks for taking the time to comment!! Looking forward to the C5 coming back out of storage to make more videos on this coming spring!
Another item, you should mention if you ever do another video is the fuel filter in some years are not exposed and are in the fuel tank? And some years have the magnetic ride suspension, which can be costly to replace with those particular parts unless you program them out and put regular shocks in. Also, some years the ECM cannot be rebuilt at all.
Enjoyed your video! I have an 04 Lemans Commemorative convertible w/6 spd and get compliments every time I drive it. I look forward to watching your other videos.

Love my 2003 Z06. I bought it in 2020 with no mods and 19000 miles. Of all the Corvettes I've owned its by far the best all around. That is saying a lot because I've never had a bad Corvette of any Gen yet. Good info guys.
I really appreciate what you guys said at the end. Was starting to lose hope that id never be able to own one because of all the problems. But it gave me hope. 👍🏼
Great to see a father and son working together ! Yes, dad’s always drive better than their boys 😂… Question, I just bought a 2004 Z06 CE. I have heard that earlier models of the Z06 needed to have the valve springs replaced… do you know if Chevy got that worked out by the 04 models? Be strong and courageous
It'd be wise to upgrade to the blue "beehive" springs minimum. Double spring set up if you're planning to put a bigger cam. Also, while you're in there put in the Che trunion upgrade because the needle bearings in the rocker arms are a known weak point.
Not trying to chamge anyone's mind about buying a C5. Because I love mine. But the common problems with the Service Column Lock, pull key wait 10 seconds messages and the BCM not recognizing the key, is a pain in the rear. I bought my 1998 C5 /Auto 14 years ago. And never had issues with her starting (unless it was my battery. Have replaced many of those. So use a tender👍 But 2019 I took it to an electrical shop because my Security light kept coming on while driving. Manager said it needed a module bypass. So that was done. Drive home was fine, no Security light. Went to drive the car later that afternoon, and it cut off backing out of my driveway. Cut off a second time. So I got the pulled key wait 10 seconds message for the first time. So I did that and all was good. So I thought! But I did call the shop and tell them. They told me they've never had a module to fail, but bring the car back to them. They told me they replaced the module again. But same issues 2nd time around. So I was scared to try a 3rd time. So I've just dealt with it and only do car shows if it starts. And the car started having intermittent starts. So that's been over the past 5 years as well. Being a female with no mechanical experience, I have to rely on shops. But since my problems started after the module bypass was done. I've watched I think every You Tube video made and read a lot of forums on these common issue's. Now for the 1st time last week I got the Service Column Lock message! When it was supposedly fixed before I ever had the message 5 years ago. Sorry to vent on your channel, but I think anyone thinking about buying a C5 should do their homework on these common issues. But I've heard that a very low % of the 97& 98's don't except the module for some reason🤔
