    The ones I missed :
    Linework - literally kicking myself that I missed that one - but yeah line work tattoos are just stuff made out of lines (lol no shit Lauren) Curt Montgomery is a good example of line work tattoos 😀
    Sketch style - as it’s says - tattoos that look like a sketchy drawing with a mixture of line work and fine details . Bk_tattooer is a good example
    Dot work - I purposely didn’t mention this one cause you can use dot work techniques throughout many of the styles I mentioned . I probably should have mentioned that in this video though sorry 💙

    At age 12/13 or so i saw a documentary about a maori tattoo artist in New Zealand. She talked about the whole poke n stick process. She also explained how maori tattoos are made: you go to tattoo artist, tell them your life story and they then decide where the tattoo goes and what it looks like.
    Since then i wanted my first tattoo to be such a tattoo.

    Great video, but I think you may have unintentionally misrepresented Japanese style tattoos a little bit. While definitely the aesthetic and look elements are important, it's also important to remember and point out that the imagery and motifs used in Japanese style tattooing is deeply rooted in history, tradition, and story telling (whether that be images that tell the story of famous myths, or that tell the personal life story/beliefs/aspirations of the tattooed person).

    • @rebelprep
      @rebelprep 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @treacletatts yes! I came to the comments to say this! I would love to see a retraction or update to this part of the video. It's not "oriental" inspired. It's Japanese. And it's based in history and culture and has a darker and more symbolic past than some people understand. I think more people should be aware of Japanese or native or tribal imagery and history before getting it tattooed.

    • @rebelprep
      @rebelprep 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @treacle tatts whoops mistagged. But also same as other commenters- same with stick and poke being the origin of tattooing or "tatu"ing. I love your educational work and would love to see more of this history added!

    YAS at 8:57 you used Hannah Flowers as a reference! I got my last piece from her and she's such an absolute angel. Her art nouveau influenced portraits are just delicious. The rest of my tattoos are black work pointillism so it's my only colour piece for now, but I don't care if it sticks out 😂 it deserves to stick out! I love that modern Japanese tattoos are such a seamless continuation of historically significant and iconic illustrative styles from that region. Like if you look at Japanese woodblock prints from centuries ago, or artwork even older, they're the same style, just through a different medium. I'd never be drawn to get a Japanese piece myself, but I've always appreciated how the celebration of Japanese styles of illustration has held its impact and relevance.

    I don’t really care for traditional American tattoos, but I’ve been thinking of getting a shoulder and back piece and the Neo traditional style is inspiring me now, and glad I know what it’s called after watching this so I can search it better (my purpose for coming here).
    I’m an artist myself and have sketched out some designs I might like to wear in my skin, though of course I’d find an artist who I’d trust to make it their own.
    Basically would get a collage of foliage and forest animals, twisting around each other in dynamic forms, over one shoulder and across my back. with a bunch of other little meaningful details hidden between the leafs and ferns.
    In color with warm earthy tones. And I’m just imagining it in low contrast actually, with adjacent colors being close in value, for a less distracting impression from a distance but the more you focus on it the more creatures you’ll notice. Some highlighted focal points of course.
    So hey if anybody on here happens to read this idea and have some artist in mind who does things like this well, either with subtle colored realism or neo traditional, lemme know about ‘em !

    It would be great to do a video go through all the subtypes of blackwork. For example, I see far too little discussion of engraving/woodcut style tattoos. There are so many great artists doing that style and it gets almost no discussion that I see. You could also discuss subtypes of ornamental (which is mainly blackwork) like floral, minimalist, sacred geometry, paisley, Mehndi, Croatian, etc.

    Traditional is also supposed to have minimal shading and like, 3 colors I believe?

      Like, black red yellow blue? I think it's neotraditional when you go out of that. And I'd call your kawaii tattoos new school.

    The "stick and poke" with the stick tapping a stick with a "needle" is where the name Tattoo comes from... It's Tatu from Tahiti.

    Hey girl I was wondering if you could maybe answer a question I had. There was a style I saw that look like the saturated colors of traditional or neotraditional but without any line work. Do you have any idea what that might be called?

  • @thenoddistsdisciple

    I have a tattoo that looks like a woodcut print on my left calf, it's a blimp. I would call it a neotraditional piece technically speaking, but there's so much dotwork and the clouds drawn around it have thick and bold outlines. It's a flash piece but I've never seen anything like it, it's my own little special thing. :D

    Hi, I was wondering if it's a bad idea to get a moon outline on my ankle? I heard in multiple of your videos that single needle tattoos either blow out or fade, so is there any way I can get a small tattoo of the moon on my ankle? Thank you so much ♥️

    I found your channel from a recommended while watching Just the Tattoo of Us and I am so glad. I was trying to figure out which style I wanted to get a peppermint in (it's an inside joke with my friend and I) and I decided on traditional. Great video and great explanations! Definitely subscribing!

    Black / Line work all the way ~! I wont ever get a coloured tattoo thats just mee! I have a sun on one wrist, a moon on the other, they aren't dainty theyre a good size. I also have a unalome with a lotus and moon on my chest / sternum area. I also have a little nature scene trying to be in honour of my dads he couldnt finish before passing, they are all done the same style and I am sticking to it! I want a floral sleeve next with butterflies and crystals

    Haven't watch the entire video, but one tattoo I want to get a watercolor but with enough pigment for it to last, I would like a floral watercolor tattoo on my ankle.
    I would also like some Studio Ghibli tattoos like ponyo and the soot spirits.
    I love birds especially Eurasian Magpies, so I would like that too, and a butterfly koi fish tattoo.
    I also want my parents and 2 siblings to design a small tattoo design and I can have it in the formation of a diamond and have their birthdays marked to it.
    I want tattoos, I'm 18 but I don't have a job

    After that tattoo etiquette video I cant think of that hand poked style with the stick thing without calling it tap-tap 😹 it just makes so much sense, it should totally be called tap-tap
    Love your vids as always so complete and I appreciate so much the effort you make to educate people before they get tattoos so ♥️

    Hey Lauren, have you heard of Brutal Black? It’s a tattoo “art” project that’s been going on where they do blackout tattoos with the goal of causing as much pain as possible. There’s a VICE documentary on it, and it can be hard to watch, but I’m really interested in your opinion it .
