I think winter is a perfect example of why companies need to stop forcing high notes and making idols sing outside of their vocal range, she has a beautiful voice that isn't being 100% showcased and this technique could end up killing her vocal cords in the long run...
She's only good in the mid register, mediocre in belting, bad in high register, mediocre in lower register (compared to Ningning who has one if not the best lower register in the kpop history) aka she's just a lead and actually Giselle isn't that far from her neither is karina, Ningning is on another league of her own
It's actually a common issue, even in 2nd gen. An example for that is Tiffany of SNSD. That gurl suffered from vocal nodules but SM still pushed her and gave her lines that is outside her comfortable range (and they didn't even really give her the correct training that suits her voice).
Stable does not equal to good techniue imo. U can still have stable singing with flat notes and I noticed Jisoo always strain when belting coz that's not her comfort range but did great at lower register
In Winter's defence, she shouldn't be getting high notes *because they're not in her range* In the long run, she'll end up doing damage to her voice if she has to keep it up. High notes does not always indicate if someone is talented, and kpop fans need to drop that idea quickly
That’s not true, i mean, SM really care about vocals, is the only company that have idols still active with more than 30+ and more than 10+ the experience. One time Seulgi almost lost her voice in their trainees and debut era because they sing always live, but now SM is really taking care about vocals, and Winter can hit those notes easy. Its not like JYP that say tht their idols must have that type of voice that is not their range, like Momo.

Idols like Jisoo can't support high register and need to be given low support parts more. How exactly do you define vocalist? Karina isn't part of the vocal line and is actually 4th in vocals in aespa (Giselle recently rose above her for being more consistent and having a cleaner apporoach). So why is she in the video? And if you include her, shouldn't you just do all of the members?

I will never understand why it's the popular opinion that Ning Ning possess these qualities. To start, Karina has the best lows and mid belts. I've never heard her off key, but to be fair, her singing lines aren't very complex. Winter, is also never off key. Her high notes are not strained, instead it is the technique she uses, and it's a stylistic choice. K. Will, hyolyn, rachael lampa, and even I choose to sing this way because an open throat while pushing harder makes your voice vulnerable to cracking and unstable vibrato. Ning Ning sounds like she's got great potential, but the type of songs they sing and the delivery isn't natural for her voice. Her mid belts are inconsistent and lose stability in her vibrato and agility. Her high notes are fine, but unlike winter, she takes a different approach to them; she chooses to soften her voice and sings a bit wider than winter. Think, beyonce (crazy in love era), Wendy, sohyang. Ning Ning is good, but she sounds like she still finding her voice and all its capabilities. I think she can become the best vocalist is aespa, but as for now, she's really not. She reminds me of Katherine McPhee when she was on American idol; starts losing vocal quality in mid belts and high belts; they have the ability to do them well, but its inconsistent.

Ning may have more off key moments but she still has a better mix than both karina and winter. Winter’s high notes are also strained a lot. Watch the same high notes they have gotten in girls. Ning supports while winter strains. Ning also has a better agility than winter. It may seem different considering ning is weakest SM female main vocalist. But still winter doesn’t have a better mix or hv than her. She’s currently the best vocal in aespa.

I also don't believe what you're hearing is strain; instead it's high larynx placement; sure it takes a bit more effort to push alot of air out like that rather than having more of an open throat, but that doesn't automatically mean strain. While winter is using a full voice to sing high notes, Ning Ning does more of a head voice to sing higher. Sure, Ning Ning may be able to add a bit more power in her mid belts, but when she does,she comprises the control of her pitch, agility, and vibrato when she adds more power. Wendy and Ning Ning basically use the same vocal mechanics when singing, but there is stark contrast between the abilities of what they can do vocally at the moment. Ning Ning is not a naturally chesty singer and I can hear it in her inconsistent singing. I'm not saying Ning Ning is bad in anyway. Just for me, my own opinion, consistency matters more than ability. Like, sure if you can only do good vocal performances under certain circumstances, while another singer consistently does good vocals all the time (even with some abnormal vocal techniques), I will prefer the more consistent singer. Only because of this, do I put winter ahead of Ning Ning right now. I do believe winter is the best she will ever be right now. However, Ning Ning has much more room to grow and improve and could eventually be much better than winter could ever be.

She opens her mouth in a oval shape which is good. She is stable with her live voice, she sometimes goes out of tune when singing(prob because she’s dancing at the same time). She can reach high notes but sometimes she forces her untrained side of her vocal cords to reach that note, making her voice strained and sounding like she’s screaming instead of singing. Most relaxed: Haewon She has nice vocals, she often opens her mouth wide when she sings higher notes, she sometimes get a bit airy, out of breathe too fast, or strained. Sometimes a bit nasal. She has great live vocals, barely gets out of tune. She sometimes opens her mouth in a side ways oval, which is a not good technique. She doesn’t seem to reach high high notes like lily, but she isn’t screaming when she is reaching higher notes. Most strained: Sullyoon Sullyoon is good, but she definitely need more training. She strains her voice a lot, she sometimes out of tune, she isn’t able to make good chest/head vocal voices. I say her tone is good, but her technique isn’t. She opens her mouth in a circle shape, which isn’t so bad. She barely opens her mouth in high notes. Jisoo’s voice is top tier, I honestly don’t care about technique and all that stuff, it’s more about the vibe or how the voice makes you feel, she sings with emotion and the deep voice is great

How exactly do you define vocalist? Karina isn't part of the vocal line and is actually 4th in vocals in aespa (Giselle recently rose above her for being more consistent and having a cleaner apporoach). So why is she in the video? And if you include her, shouldn't you just do all of the members?

Karina isn't part of the vocal line in Aespa because Winning is too strong but Karina can still easily become Main vocal or Lead vocal in some other groups. And her and Giselle is interchangeable. And Karina does have reall soothing vocals so it's good

I will never understand why it's the popular opinion that Ning Ning possess these qualities.
To start, Karina has the best lows and mid belts. I've never heard her off key, but to be fair, her singing lines aren't very complex.
Winter, is also never off key. Her high notes are not strained, instead it is the technique she uses, and it's a stylistic choice. K. Will, hyolyn, rachael lampa, and even I choose to sing this way because an open throat while pushing harder makes your voice vulnerable to cracking and unstable vibrato.
Ning Ning sounds like she's got great potential, but the type of songs they sing and the delivery isn't natural for her voice. Her mid belts are inconsistent and lose stability in her vibrato and agility. Her high notes are fine, but unlike winter, she takes a different approach to them; she chooses to soften her voice and sings a bit wider than winter. Think, beyonce (crazy in love era), Wendy, sohyang.
Ning Ning is good, but she sounds like she still finding her voice and all its capabilities. I think she can become the best vocalist is aespa, but as for now, she's really not. She reminds me of Katherine McPhee when she was on American idol; starts losing vocal quality in mid belts and high belts; they have the ability to do them well, but its inconsistent.
Ning is still the best vocal in aespa she’s not overrated. I don’t what you’re on ning has a better lower register than karina. Ning has an amazing low register for a soprano. Ning may have more off key moments but she still has a better mix than both karina and winter. Winter’s high notes are also strained a lot. Watch the same high notes they have gotten in girls. Ning supports while winter strains. Ning also has a better agility than winter. It may seem different considering ning is weakest SM female main vocalist. But still winter doesn’t have a better mix or hv than her. She’s currently the best vocal in aespa.

@mimiimfat I don't think winter makes stylistic choices. I think her voice is just her voice and she doesn't have capability of playing with it and changing the timbre of it. I also don't believe what you're hearing is strain; instead it's high larynx placement; sure it takes a bit more effort to push alot of air out like that rather than having more of an open throat, but that doesn't automatically mean strain. While winter is using a full voice to sing high notes, Ning Ning does more of a head voice to sing higher.
Sure, Ning Ning may be able to add a bit more power in her mid belts, but when she does,she comprises the control of her pitch, agility, and vibrato when she adds more power. Wendy and Ning Ning basically use the same vocal mechanics when singing, but there is stark contrast between the abilities of what they can do vocally at the moment. Ning Ning is not a naturally chesty singer and I can hear it in her inconsistent singing.
I'm not saying Ning Ning is bad in anyway. Just for me, my own opinion, consistency matters more than ability. Like, sure if you can only do good vocal performances under certain circumstances, while another singer consistently does good vocals all the time (even with some abnormal vocal techniques), I will prefer the more consistent singer.
Only because of this, do I put winter ahead of Ning Ning right now. I do believe winter is the best she will ever be right now. However, Ning Ning has much more room to grow and improve and could eventually be much better than winter could ever be.

Lily: lily has great support and great techniques, she opens her mouth wide when she reaches higher notes which is what your supposed to do. She opens her mouth in a oval shape which is good. She is stable with her live voice, she sometimes goes out of tune when singing(prob because she’s dancing at the same time). She can reach high notes but sometimes she forces her untrained side of her vocal cords to reach that note, making her voice strained and sounding like she’s screaming instead of singing.
Most relaxed: Haewon
She has nice vocals, she often opens her mouth wide when she sings higher notes, she sometimes get a bit airy, out of breathe too fast, or strained. Sometimes a bit nasal. She has great live vocals, barely gets out of tune. She sometimes opens her mouth in a side ways oval, which is a not good technique. She doesn’t seem to reach high high notes like lily, but she isn’t screaming when she is reaching higher notes.
Most strained: Sullyoon
Sullyoon is good, but she definitely need more training. She strains her voice a lot, she sometimes out of tune, she isn’t able to make good chest/head vocal voices. I say her tone is good, but her technique isn’t. She opens her mouth in a circle shape, which isn’t so bad. She barely opens her mouth in high notes. She kinda forces her vocal cords to reach that note when she isn’t ready and then she gets nasal or airy/out of breathe.
