@Jay Cardon this is how history is one by the oligarchs. It demonizes the people from our past that did the best under the circumstances they were in. We end up killing the people that actually drove us forward. What are National narrative losses those people that were willing to stretch outside the norm but didn't get it 100% right by our standards then we will never be able to stand on their shoulders we will find ourselves crawling again. No, that's not what she says. She encourages the viewer to understand the complexity of some of our heralded figures, and understand they were not perfect. Then, she encourages us to find out about other voices who were deliberately left out of the historical narrative because of the color of their skin.

Susan B. Anthony helped get Lincoln elected as the first Republican/Abolitionist president because she was an Abolitionist. She was also a member of the Underground Railroad. She was a heroine. The present is better than the past because people in the past left the world better than they found it, not because people today are better than people in the past. Anyone who fails to recognize this will not leave the world better than they found it.

It is well recorded history that Fredrick Douglas was a suffragette. He was a participant at the first women's rights convention at Seneca Falls, NY. He signed the "Declaration of Sentiments" at that very convention and even wrote about his support for the movement in his own newspaper "the North Star". But even if it were true that Fredrick was anti-women's votes, that wouldn't make it ok for Susan B. Anthony to be anti Black votes. Two wrongs don't make a right.

Anthony's "Arm" comment was made at an 1866 meeting of the American Equal Rights Association in response to her old friend Frederick Douglass saying that, while the ballot was desirable for women, it was vital for Black men. Douglas appeared to back down from his earlier commitment to female suffrage, and Anthony feared that if the 15th Amendment did not include women, it would take a lot longer for the issue to come up again. GUESS WHAT...4 amendments and 60 years later (after her death) it FINALLY did. I guess she was right!!

Wether Susan was referring specifically to white women or all women, is irrelavent when you consider he abandonment of her abolitionist roots when black men were being heinously lynched accross the country, for attempting to excercise their new right to vote.

I don’t understand why blacks people want to always make things about race, can we just work together for a greater cause, it’s getting exhausting being exclusive. Can we just give credit where credit is due whether they are black or white. All these stories are mutually important for the progression of all women regardless of race. MLK had a dream and it was inclusive.

This is a wonderful video about the history of who did fight for ALL women and who did not. 💕 Freeman is accurately explaining a side of American history that many people (in this comment section) are unaware of while also remaining politically neutral within this context. Susan B. Anthony was incredibly racist and is known for her role in First Wave Feminism (research “First Wave Feminism” and “white feminism”). Voting rights for women of color were not achieved until decades later, and a lot of white women continued to be opposed to it. Having more conversations about inclusive activists, such as Sojourner Truth, provides more insight into history; inclusive activists were erased from modern history books, so any arguments about how these discussions are “erasing history” are inaccurate (see comments section). If you are opposed to having conversations about the racist lives of historical figures, then you are enabling racism today by forcing a white savior narrative.
Also, a majority of negative comments here have nothing to do with the historical content Freeman is discussing. Rather many commentators are trying to invalidate her based on personal attacks using assumptions and/or irrelevant discourse such as her race and gender (research “ad hominem fallacy”).
For anyone who is still upset and is a US citizen, here is one last point that may upset you even more. If you are angry that others are discussing the histories of minorities (in this case women of color) and how they fought for this country more than a lot of white people, these inclusive discussions are supported by the Constitution (and have been ever since it was created even though people did not express it). Please do not try to cite the Constitution or “law” as supporting your unjustified racism because it simply makes you look foolish.

Everybody has their own biases and acted upon those biases thinking that they were doing right. You included. We should learn about the mistakes that Susan B. Anthony made. But that doesn't mean she didn't work tirelessly for the cause of women suffrage. She DOES deserve the "I voted" sticker, but we should also learn from her wrongs so that we can improve as a society too. This video is very hateful towards Susan B. Anthony, and I disagree with that sentiment. If you want people to support your cause, find common grounds with them rather than slap them in the face. Susan B. Anthony is a heroine to many people, like your mom or dad or whoever might be your heros. How would you feel if someone made a video on how awful your parents were, and that was the only message they gave? You would probably feel, "Whoa, they made mistakes but they also did good things too." And you would avoid that person's message even if it contains truth. Be humble when publicizing others mistakes, because you did not live a perfect life yourself.

Two notable mistakes: I’m a huge fan of Truth, but the popular Ain’t I a Woman speech is a fictionalized version of her Cincinnati address. And Lyndon Johnson was, in many ways, the most effective White champion of civil rights this country has known.

I agree with her but want to add something. I am a feminist and I'm sad and disappointed that early feminists were racist. However, I'm also sad that men use this fact to discredit contemporary feminists. We're not guilty of their mistakes just like white people today aren't to blame for slavery in the past. Yes, racism and sexism are both awful so what we, feminists, should do today is learn from mistakes of our predecessors, be more inclusive and fight for rights of all the women, no matter the race or nationality. There's no point in pretending the suffragettes were perfect, but using it to make all feminists nowadays look bad is ridiculous. So don't be like "Ha! Look at those hypocrites!" when most feminists nowadays fight against both racism and sexism.

Yeah, all the people who were envolved in the decades long struggle to give women rights and abolish slavery both men and women should be recognized but as far as champions go susan b anthony was THE CHAMPION for womens rights simply due to the fact that people were so racist in those days. If it were just black people demanding for their rights and their freedom in those days it never would have happened. We really should all be greatful for the sacrafices made by all the champions of the abolishment of slavery and for womens rights reguardless of our skin color then because slavery has been common place for all skin colors throughout history. For thousands of years people all throught the world regaurdless of skin color were enslaved it wasnt until the creation of the american values of freedom and equality for all that it even became possible for the social progress we have made throughout the world to have ever happened atall. I think we can all of us feel proud to be american when you realize that the american culture and history is in and of its self one of achieving success through overwhelmin odds. A culture and nation of individuals today stand on the shoulders of great men and women who were willing to sacrafice their safety, their security, their freedom, and their lives to reach for somthing beyond were they currently stand.

Marcus Garvey isn't down with race mixing and worked together with the KKK to achieve this ideal. Marcus Garvey actually helped change the world. This video does nothing, she doesn't even point out people to study instead of Susan B. Anthony. People aren't perfect, and we can acknowledge the facts and learn from them. Thats all I listen to, I just have to filter their opinions and come out with my own.

What? Lol just because Trump says it doesn't mean it makes sense. Of course you can keep doing whatever you want. This was just a piece on the white washed history of the suffragette movement.

Trump hasn’t said anything on this topic, stop thinking about him all the time, this racist girl just wants to make everything about herself and her race. It is now/this, so this is the type of reporting we expect from a racist publication.

@@ljlarrea literally two days ago he just called a black woman asking if she believed calling himself a nationalist further emboldened white nationalists and he yelled at her how racist she was. It's been a trend since the Trump presidency to just call the mentioning of racial discrimination or injustice racist for mentioning that race is involved. Like you just did. You completely ignore the content, or idk maybe you just feel uncomfortable for being confronted with something you don't like and shut it down with some half baked narrative of white victimization.

@@MyBrainVent totally hear what you are saying... But the funny thing is, Democrats say all this stuff about individuals that go against their cause but will stick up for people like Margaret Sanger of Planned Parenthood. That woman was Pure Evil... In every way she referred to African-Americans. But the left doesn't want to mention any of that... But instead keep pushing the agenda that Planned Parenthood is the only option women have and therefore need funding... Which is money stolen from us taxpayers... Only to be given to an organization that kills human beings.

Judge people in relation to the circumstances of their lives, as well as in relation to the current universal values and your own subjective values. It's complicated, Susan probably contributed to voting rights, but the biggest factor wasn't even activism, but rather changing economical incentives and technology.

This reeks of painting a totally narrow view of history where its only good vs evil. Susan B Anthony was a abolishinist who wanted the right to vote not only for black men but for women as well. That's where her school of thought divided and in the end she took a stance against the 15th when it didn't include women. She fought with Franklin Douglas on this point who thought it was the best that the priority was giving the African American men at the time the right to vote. The two later reconciled their differences. Yes she worked with racist in the suffragtte movement. That part can not be discounted but but proclaim the story is just one sweep of she was racist and therefore does not deserve credit isn't a good picture of the actual history if it.
I full heartedly believe we should recognize the mistakes of people throughout history. It allows us a chance to grow and move on from it. To completely discard it on both ends of the spectrum is idiotic and doesn't help the coveration too move forward in any way. If you want to convince those to your side, you need a balancing point. If you choose to rewrite it the the more distrustful of you people will become. No one in history is perfect and it'll tend to bite back at you with a simple Google search when people start gunning for you. It undermines whatever point you try to make.
