    I’m half Filipino, born and raised in Denmark, far away from the Philippines. I grew up with a love for singing, and it wasn’t until my first trip to the Philippines at age 13 I realised, that I had found my true people!! Today I’m in several bands, as a singer of course :)

    Nice observation. However, take note that before karaoke came, Filipinos were already on music mode. Barkadas or group of friends used to sit on a store bench with guitars in hand singing while drinking. Later when the sun goes down they would go to a girlfriend's or any girl's house and serenade her with romantic songs. This practice has lost steam with the advent of karaoke.

      Filipinos are naturally of happy disposition. When you sing alone or with the group this shows so much to the extend that the group is contaminated. The barkadas enjoy the laughter. In my case I taught my children how to sing with the karaoke. My eldest can sing the like of Whitney Houston, Dionne Warwick and even Eydie Gorme. The family is her avid fan.

      I remember the Sing Along. Before the world had Karaoke, we've already had the Sing Along. Growing up, I remember we used to call it Sing Along but of course it was Japan who had the capability to mass produce this kind of machine, call it a different name, market it to the world, and no wonder why Karaoke is now the accepted name for it in the Philippines.

      WARNING: Contain useless info about Philippines.
      Ummm... Not all Pilipino are good at singing (look at most of our celebrities who lip synch, mostly actors), but we are passionate and given the chance, will sing anywhere. And from our vintage movie to recent 90's generation family movies, they will always insert a musical (and let's just say it's no Bollywood).
      In grade school, singing is 1/3rd of a subject, called MAPE (which is Music, Arts, and Physical Education). And English is our second language, which helps for communication and belting out our favorite English songs.
      And that's why we can sing in English almost perfectly

    • @DavidDiMuzio
      @DavidDiMuzio  7 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      Definitely, I thought of that as well. That's more of a reason why they stand out here on TH-cam as well as internationally because Filipinos sing more fluently in English than most other nationalities (especially in Asia).

      because that's not our language. go tell SINGERS in your country to sing Filipino/Tagalog songs. and the thing is MOST FAMOUS SONGS were written in English and MOST FAMOUS SINGERS speaks ENGLISH. thats why filipinos stand out here in youtube and other International Competition because we can speak/understand ENGLISH. do you get my point? for me we are all equal, there is no such thing as only filipinos are best singers in the world.

    Born in the States, I moved to the Philippines in the 60s at age 10 and what astounded me was that at every corner I saw someone strumming a guitar. I was introduced to "Songhits" a chord book published on a regular basis which meant that there was a demand for it. And 6 years later, I picked up a guitar and taught myself how to play.....How? With one of those chord books that had a sheet complete with basic chords. Ariel Urreta introduced the word " -1 " on Philippine TV. He explained it was music minus the voice.....Karaoke today.

    • @aklanpinoy6717
      @aklanpinoy6717 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I believe they still sell them "Songhits" at ShoeMart Mall when i was in Iloilo on vacation a long time ago. It's not in a magazine format like they used to, but last time i bought 3 of them, they're in a book form, a thick one with all the songs you could imagine, in English and Tagalog. Yup, we Filipinos love music from the Carpenters' Top of the World to Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven. And of course generations up from Kulintang, to the Filipino folk songs, to the present, Filipinos appreciated good music who have listened to Nora Aunor, Victor Wood, Eddie Perigrina, Freddie Aguilar, Mike Hanopol, Sampaguita, Claire, Boyfriends, Hotdog, Rico Puno, Pilita Corrales, Florante, and these are just the few, at least to me, most influential. Nora Aunor, Victor Wood and Eddie Perigrina mostly sang covers of popular standards from the United States, but what set them apart were their voice, and I may put Pilita Corrales in this group. They were ahead of my time, but even then, as a kid, our neighbors would play songs on a record player (or should i say, phono player? Our neighbors were kinda rich, so they can afford to buy these records!), and through time the songs get stucked in the memory. Now, they're on TH-cam and listening to them, just bring good memories of childhood. Remembering, I see myself passing through their front yard hoping that someone is playing music, and just how many times I have done that! I grew up listening to the Seventies/Eighties music, when on the scene singing purely Tagalog at that time, there was Freddie Aguilar, Florante, Mike Hanopol, Sampaguita, Boyfriends, Basil Valdez, Coritha, Asin, but there was just so many!!!! Hahaa! And now they're all here TH-cam! We even have our very own humorous Filipino Yoyoy Villame who had way, way done things before Weird Al Yankovic had parodied contemporary songs in America! Mabuhay! :)

    also unlike in other countries where people are a bit shy to sing, specially in public since they fear being teased, in the Philippines, whether you have a good voice or even outright tone deaf, you can sing to your heart's content. whether it be in a drunken party singing karaoke at somebody's house, karaoke bars with your friends or co-workers, or even in a public bar or club and singing on stage with a real live band, just go up and people will appreciate your effort. some singers get discovered just singing karaoke in the mall!! music is simply a part of everyday Filipino culture.

      I was born 1981, 35. Though my playlist is versatile, I am more on 70s and the 80s, part 90s. James Ingram, Barry Manilow, David Gates. I think It's because of the professional mix esp 80s. When you are to listen with headphones, you will really hear and feel the surround and proper panning and positioning of instruments and vocals. 2000 have hightech recording studios with all those computers. But 70s and 80s are perfectly engineered music recording.

    when the video karaoke machines are not made yet Filipinos used guitars and sing a long together almost everyday with family and relatives, they most of the time change the lyrics of the songs to their own dialect and made it fun and nice to hear. Filipinos living in the mountains still doing this jamming even some people in the city. After guitars Filipino used cassettes - side A and B tape to record their voice, they love to play it one more time after singing until the video karaoke machine was made. Now, there are Filipinos who are enjoying singing together using instruments in a band...Like live bands... They play the instruments together and sing like a live band does, but its only for fun, like friends gathering..

    Great insight. #2 makes the most sense. Filipinos are just naturally very good at adaptation and emulation. When Filipinos settle in a different country, they never really have a hard time settling in because they quickly adapt to the culture, language, mannerisms and demeanors of the locals. You will rarely find a Filipino living overseas who does not speak the foreign language -- we are really good at adapting to new environments.

    Don't normally comment, but felt like stepping in to give my two cents. And I can't sleep.Having traveled to over half of your haul, what makes Filipinos perceived to be 'great singers' is that the barometer or standard used in this analysis is that of western, specifically, American pop music and songs. So the no. 1 reason, really, for me, is that Filipino 'pop' music and songs are influenced by the likes of Celine Dion (French-Canadian), Journey, Whitney Houston, etc. Filipinos are great singers, as far as the standard mentioned above.Now step back for a bit -- if you go to Sri Lanka, Japan, Nepal, India (North, South, Central), Bangladesh, etc. etc. -- these countries have a defined music culture of their own (ok, Bangladesh and Nepal pop culture is very Indian). But the point is, their standard of what is a 'good' or a 'great' singer is very alien to what is western or American. I did not hear Let It Go in Nepal, nor did I hear Don't Stop Believin' there. But I heard amazing vocalists with so much soul, particularly in Sri Lanka. Listen to Hindi music, or a Tamil song in the South (Sri Lanka or Maldives), or a pop song in Thailand, these have great nasal and/or throat runs to die for, it's just that the songs are not familiar nor are heard.Furthermore, Filipinos, like its neighbors and racial siblings Malaysians, Thais... ok, even Vietnamese and Cambodians, have the classic South East Asian physical built which impacts how the neck is built, and how their voices are developed. Throw in the ENGLISH language and 'American' diction here, you get a perfect combination of a speaking and at that, singing, voice that is highly nasal with great head control. Now train these Filipinos classically or karaoke-wise, wherein the voice should come from the diaphragm, you get a superb combination of East and West wherein the usually hard to achieve head sounds are just normal, the falsettos and runs are as if normal or organic (even the boys), and then you get the mesmerizing growls and power via the diaphragm. Last, throw in the Spanish (still Western) element of being romantic - you have a perfect singer who is A+ in all fronts: technically good as a vocalist, who sings familiar pop English songs, with seemingly so much soul.So, no Filipinos are not the greatest singers -- we just happen to be, in the ears of those that are familiar of the songs we normally sing. What would be amazing is if people invest in their cultural capital, and see that, hey, there is a big world out there - there is so much music, not just the pop ones we normally hear played in malls, television and jeepneys. Thanks for the time reading, appreciate it.

      Your right.. I watch music videos or anything that involves singing.. In almost all languages.. I could tell Filipinos are really great at singing. Others only became famous because of their song.. Not their voices.. And besides, other countries uses auto-tuning and etc.. Filipinos don't , you can recognize everytime they sing..
      But I'm not saying Filipinos are the greatest.. I'm just sharing my opinion..

    Thanks for the compliment to Filipino singers. Apart from the factors you shared that make Filipinos good in singing, here are my points:
    1. Historically we have so much culture because of the “visitors” from different countries - Spain, Dutch, USA, Japan, China, etc. Exposure to their culture helped us adapt to different methods of expression, most especially singing.
    2. Filipinos are romantic (which you pointed out too), and to sing songs like those would require a whole voice range compared to fast pop.
    3. Most of us live simple lives which will lead us to connect with family and friends more through activities that would have us share our talent. Hence “videoke” in almost any event or celebration is required because it doesn’t have us Filipinos spend too much. Videoke set, food, drinks and friends or family at home - a complete setup.
    4. The Filipino language plays a factor too because it is mixed and continues to evolved with other languages. Filipinos have an idea of diction or enunciation that helps the range of how we speak or sing in different languages apart from our own almost clearly.
    I just wanted to share what I thought, but I truly appreciate your detailed views.👏🏻🇵🇭

    All points considered.... i think you hit the nail on the head.
    I grew up in Philippines until 14, so these are my personal memories of how it was.
    Its fair to say, you're not a Filipino unless you havent done karaoke.
    But i think its just part of everyday Filipino life to sing. Biirthdays, funerals, shopping malls, clubs even beach resorts and everywhere in phils have karaokes everywhere.
    Singing is always encouraged and seen very positively.
    Imagine living in a country where everytime you turn on the television; most likely there is someone singing.

    Great analysis. All true. Haha. But I think my only criticism with Filipino musicians is there is not enough original song material that have become hits out there. Nothing that the world can point to and say that was a Filipino written song. They need to come out with more original music that can reach out to the world.

    • @HewbhurtGabon
      @HewbhurtGabon 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We just simply love American and English type of music. Most Filipino think that pop music must be anything like music in America. If music producers, tagalog or English OPM, arrange it like Asian, it certainly would not sell.

    • @devonferris
      @devonferris 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hewbhurt Gabon - I disagree. There are a lot of foreign music that are good and is well known internationally. When you hear it you can actually pinpoint that it came from that country because it's well known. Filipinos just have to figure out a way to make a catchy sound. It doesn't matter if that original Filipino song borrows a certain sound from other countries but as long as its original Filipino written it would be a HiT. Even other countries have borrowed a certain sound from other countries and have made it their own. Do you get what I'm saying?

    Filipino singers are so versatile that they can sing all types of genre of music. They're everywhere around Asia and part of the Middle East. If you go to the clubs/ bars, cruise ships, hotels etc, most of the singers you meet are Filipinos.
    Blacks are great soul singers (and best voice in my opinion) but Filipinos are a total entertainers.
