- Oklahoma death row prisoner Richard Glossip's execution was stayed by the Supreme Court on Friday, marking the ninth time he had an execution date put on hold. Glossip has maintained his innocence throughout his 25 years of incarceration; his accuser has previously attempted to recant his testimony. In an unprecedented move earlier this month, Oklahoma's Republican Attorney General Gentner Drummond filed a joint motion with Glossip's defense team to halt his May 18 execution, saying he did not receive a fair trial. For more, we are joined in Oklahoma City by Sister Helen Prejean, one of the world's most well-known anti-death penalty activists and Richard Glossip's spiritual adviser, who says she is hopeful the Supreme Court's intervention will mark the end of Glossip's legal battles. "I believe Richard's going to walk out a free man," says Prejean. She is the author of Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty and River of Fire: My Spiritual Journey.

Having the death penalty certainly doesnt make the US safe , neither does having an insane amount of guns . smdh
Are any organizations keeping tab of the number of innocent prisoners that have been wrongfully executed in the U.S.? I'm sure Americans know that they can do better.
Really this is just truly sad;!!
The Innocence Project is the best known organization tracking wrongfully convicted\executed prisoners. 55% of Americans still support the death penalty, so it’s not really tenable to say Americans know they can do better. However, 60% of the states in the union have terminated the death penalty, which is encouraging.

Thank you Sister for standing up for justice! So long as the possibility exists that a person can be wrongly convicted as has been the case many times, I am absolutely against the death penalty. Killing an innocent person is a crime against God & humanity itself!
Sometimes Westerners pursue the ultimate human rights too much. Similar to abortion, things are reversed. If a person does something that harms the lives of others, the law treats it as the same.

Sister Helen Prejean is an amazing saintly human being. Thank you dear Sister! May Richard's case go quickly and may he be freed SOON. And may the USA finally STOP TAKING LIVES VIA the DEATH PENALTY and STOP ALL the LIVES BEING TAKEN BY GUN VIOLENCE.

I've had the honor of meeting and working with Sister Helen on Oklahoma cases. Glossip is an innocent man and I hope he is saved from a wrongful execution.
We need to do away with the death penalty.

In this interview (and not for the first time), Ms. Prejean displayed an enormous disrespect for Federal Public Defenders who represent almost all death row prisoners in the U.S. independently of the availability of the so-much fetishized claim of innocent. Her assertion that "they [death row prisoners in Oklahoma] don't have teams like this [Mr. Glossip's private lawyers]" is materially false and loaded with prejudice against the public defenders who don't and won't (and can't) select high-profile cases or favored the alleged innocent.

Although I am skeptical of Richard Glossip's innocence, the Oklahoma Attorney General's concession that the man deserves a new trial is highly significant. This almost never happens except in cases where DNA evidence later conclusively exonerates a defendant. I do not agree with Sister Prejean: All of the Nazi war criminals executed and many others let go due to Cold War politics richly deserved execution. So did the Manson Family. Also her Catholic Church used to execute people for thought crimes as "heresy": Remember the Holy Inquisition! So I take the position that there should be a death penalty but only for the worst murderers ⚖️
