  • Point Panic - Captain Raf and Duke Caught Inside on "Big Saturday" March 20, MMX
    Captain Raf and Duke are taking out a group of tourists on their 40' sailboat for an ash scattering ceremony in Waikiki Harbor when a huge set rolls into the channel, outside the harbor buoy. With no time to avoid the waves, Captain Raf faces the swell head-on while Duke holds onto the mast for dear life!

    Absolutely brilliant. Making way under engine. This is like one of the most difficult situations a person can face. A boat that can handle extreme conditions, built for sail, caught in breaking waves.

      Coming in with a following sea is FAR more dangerous ..!

    • @harryvanhoo7235
      @harryvanhoo7235 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@CapnSchep Peril is peril. A following sea can lead to a stall of the rudder and keel, followed by a total loss of steerage, a broach in any direction and even a capsize. Thus the reason that most will prefer pushing into a sea. This can also lead to a vessel being overwhelmed, with similar outcomes. There are usually many factors involved, including the characteristics of the vessel, predicted weather and of course the position and terrain.

      Going out bow - to not so hard - the trick in that channel with big summer south swell - or any channel with breaking surf is coming back in - then a broach is very real danger and boats have ended up on the rocks if they didnt get it right

      This wouldn't have been a broach.
      Maybe a capsize / knock down but that's not necessarily the same thing.
      A broach is very specific - it's when you're sailing fast with the wind or waves behind you, and you get overpowered causing it to spin round and dig one side in from a combination of momentum and power.
      (If you're going into the wind/waves and get pushed sideways and tipped over that's just a capsize, don't think it has a more specific term.)

      well, one also has to consider what type of waves sizes can generate in the open ocean, where big waves are in storm conditions, not a day at the beach where you can enjoy the pleasures of a good boat and then return to safe waters within fifty yards without unreasonable risk, if you trust your drivetrain. I thought it was great fun to watch.
      when all around you is a relentless and endless ocean of sixty foot waves , you notice, plus you are in storm winds and running seas. you need a very good vessel at those times. I was in more than one storm where the wave energy would temporarily stop a 265,000 long ton supertanker, give it shudder that flexed three inch steel stiffener plates, before the momentum of all that weight pushed the ship forward again to the next wave. you try to steer to minimize impacts, as well as holding course allows, but the wave are not always lining up like shore break.

    Look beyond the breakers, there is minimal wind as the water surface is nearly calm. Impossible to sail without power through these waves and no indication to set sails. The boat has a Green Can '3' to starboard as it heads offshore, appropriate navigation for the channel, as long as hawaii coreg is 'red right return'. Some surfers are in the channel. He is exiting the harbour on an ebb tide, and incoming offshore swell has created a 'rage', which even good skippers can get caught in without warning on a calm day. Best way to prevent that is to go out on slack, or early flood tide. 10 degrees off perpendicular to the wave is max, after that the boat would probobly have broached. The skipper had no choice but to proceed and he did fine. The only question is whether he knew what was going on or not - clearly most of the commentors don't.

      @scottpringle5200 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Richard D I share your skepticism to an extent. At the same time, some commentators will have actual, valid experience. The trick is to sort through these, and not make a blanket criticism of all comments (which requires some boating/sailing experience).

    • @richardd3663
      @richardd3663 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Scott Pringle 50 years experience to date enough for you? 5 Atlantic crossings, the Baltic, the Mediterranean, English Channel, Biscay, Bay of Plenty New Zealand, Florida Gulf Coast, non stop round the British Isles, sail instructor, steel, grp, wood, ferro yacht builder, RYA Offshore skippers ticket, tallship rigger, sailmaker............

    • @scottpringle5200
      @scottpringle5200 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Richard D Super impressive. Sounds like some amazing adventures you must have had. But I was never questioning your credentials. No one commented on my lone point (below) which was that it's not a good idea to set out (even under power) with the sail cover on, because you can't raise the sail in a hurry in an emergency. Is that a reasonable practice in your experience?

    • @richardd3663
      @richardd3663 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Scott Pringle Sorry, I missed that point you were making. Yes, there are several 'points' like yours I would add, like the companionway being open. I believe it says he was 'caught out' so fair enough, he wasn't expecting to be in Cape Horn conditions!My thought re the sail cover is I don't think it would have done him any good to set sail in that particular situation, the motor is his best option. Also instead of taking the waves head on, each one almost stopping the vessel, the best tactic under sail or power or preferably both is to take the waves at a few degrees off the bow, thereby maintaining way, kinder on the boat too. Some books say to do this whenever possible as a survival tactic rather than run before a gale towing something to slow you down. All I have ever done in an 11 gusting 12 was to lash everything down and go below and let her ride it out her own way. I'm still here..........

    • @Antipodean33
      @Antipodean33 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Richard D He was carrying passengers for an ashes scattering ceremony, so i'd assume they were down below and i'd leave the companion way open in case the worst happens, you'd want those people down below an easy way out. Would you agree?

  • @DWileyOne
    @DWileyOne 12 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    The captain did an awesome job of managing the boat in a dangerous situation. To all of you who made comments implying that he was too close to shore, or shouldn't have been inside the break.... stuff like this happens all the time. Those of us who pilot boats know we are often at the whim of Mother Nature, although we try our best to avoid nasty situations. (Also, the camera perspective and angle makes it look more dramatic.) Nonetheless, Captain did a great job.

    • @aarontooth

    • @bayareablues2255
      @bayareablues2255 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@aarontooth The boat is coming out of Ala Moana Boat Harbor, which has (arguably) the best surf spot on the South Shore right at the entrance (Ala Moana Bowls) - thus the surfers. I believe the harbor master usually shuts down the harbor during big swells. The captain has skills - but was also very lucky. Absolutely no reason to be heading out during a swell like that.

    As others have commented, not sure if being in this location was a mistake on the skipper's part, or not (the surfer is not a good sign). I will make one point not mentioned. The sail cover is on, preventing the mainsail from being raised. This is a bad practice in my opinion and experience, as in the event of an engine failure, or other need to have sail, there will be a big delay in getting sail up. I think it should be removed before leaving the dock.

    Tourist passengers show panic when you simply set sail & first heel over, companion way is open (not critical, but you don't need 50 gal of seawater soaking everything), bow line is in the water and ol' Duke is clinging to the boom for no reason, but is in a great place to get swept off. Mess below in that 30 yo Winnebago is likely BIG. Good news:keel didn't fall off & the rig didn't come down.

      Good thing he didn't have any goop hanging out at the bottom.of his fuel tanks or the engine could have packed up before he made it out of that shipshow for lack of fuel flow after the racor got hit by a gallon of black slime.

    good thing he kept the boat headed straight into it, any veering off just a little and they would get hammered.

    Does anyone know what the make of that sailboat is? This video is a definite testament to the apparent toughness of that vessel.

    An engine failure there and that ship is going to be in serious trouble. The companionway hatch is still open and seawater is cascading in there. There are surfers in the water too. This is no place for a sailboat.

    Looks lika a CAL-40. Why is the companionway open?

    Never been Ala Moana side but in Maui there is a 'harbor' I have had to punch 20 foot waves before just to get outside on big swell days. Theres no way around it when swell comes from certain angle. Luckily I've only done it in power boat.

    I've been through something only a little less hairy just once. It was a classical wind-against-tide situation in a Florida entrance (Fort Pierce). Here it seems to be big swells against strong wind. The tidal range is small, but the entrance could funnel the current. This is quite dangerous, because the swirling of the breaking waves could deflect the boat from an exactly straight-on heading. A full-keel boat is probably better in the waves, but harder to straighten quickly if deflected.

    Why were they so close to shore, near such dangerous surf?

    Go sailboat ... keep that nose to the waves 🌊

    So foolish. The stress on the rigging and the base of the mast, the engine and transmission being thrown out of alignment - just wait for the swell to die down.

    I am sure that "Captain Raf and Duke" had to spend several hours cleaning up "group of tourist" barf after that trip.... Probably mixed with the deceased's ashes.... Dang. The sea has no heart.

  • @cprinspector1882

    Well done. The Skipper kept the nose directly into the force of the waves, slow and steady, just enough over-matching the power of each wave. Pretty full waves anyway, so not too much power for that shape of craft. There's no real issue or danger here for those that know the surf.

      What about fuel going sideways and your fuel pump drawing air... Sputter engine stall.... Truly the hero of the stupid

      There is a danger that motor will not provide enough of thrust, and you'll be carried back by breaking waves. If you past the break, it should be all good.
