  • Does your dog struggle with settling down in your home?
Does your dog have separation anxiety?
Have you tried creating boundaries with little to no success?
In this video we show you how to teach your dog the place command in 4 easy steps!
This exercise can be called different things like stationing, duration work, place, etc.
The purpose of this exercise is for a dog to learn how to control their impulses and relax in one spot (a huge task for many humans to achieve with their dog.
There is a BIG difference between a dog calmly following their human leader psychologically vs. obsessively and neurotically following around their human that they see as a follower but who they need to keep tabs on.
I see it ALL THE TIME. The humans perception is the dog just loves them so much. The reality is the dog has nothing else, sees their human as an unstable energy that needs to be led and therefore follows them obsessively to keep tabs on a member of THEIR pack.
As humans, we rationalize. When I tell people what’s really happening, you can see the wave of reality hit them. Their whole idea of their relationship with their dog was an illusion.
It’s a feeling of disbelief at first (against belief dog just loves them so much) but it’s a moment to be grateful that you can actually see what is happening instead of the illusion of what’s happening.
If you have an anxious dog, place training must be on your list of things to do with your dog.
The best time to teach a dog place is when they’ve been sufficiently exercised. That will put their body into a resting/recovery state (calmness) which will be associated to the bed.
Also know that every time your dog makes a mistake and attempts to get off the bed, he is giving you another opportunity to step up as leader by following through.
I can continue to show you the way but YOU have to earn leadership for yourself with your dog. It takes effort but the return in your effort when you have a well balanced dog that you have great communication with is SO worth it!

For anyone reading this: I know that dog training can be difficult sometimes, but you're doing great. Keep up the good work, and your dog (and your own sanity) will thank you for it! ❤️💕

You mention the “shh” command and a video. I wasn’t able to find the video and was wondering if you can link it?

It doesn't get any cuter than this. One thing I love about you is that it's always clear that Cesar is your inspiration 🙏🏻🥰.

This is so funny, I just came across this video because I've been having trouble teaching my dog Dawson this command. First time I've seen another dog with his name!

Great instructions. I have an adult rescue dog. She’s 7 yrs old. How long realistically will it take for her to really obey this command?

Thank you for such a clear, easy demo. I feel inspired that I can teach this. I have 2 doodles 3 yo and 6 mo. Both are doing well w steps 1 and 2. Working on staying in place and adding distractions. I don’t have a ton of space. Do you recommend separate places (beds) for each dog or is okay for them to share a large, elevated bed when I give command. They are both excitable when people come in or if someone knocks/rings bell so I’d generally be giving it to both at same time. Do you have any videos on eliminating nuisance barking? The 6mo is a rescue and a barker.

This is great, when you stay in tje room and move around, but what about when you leave the room and dog follows and doesn't want to stay?

Have you made a shhh video? Im also trying to find more on the nose, eyes, ears.

Okay so - big question. When I teach this, I don’t encourage food use, because I overwhelmingly find dogs get too excited - and I’m usually bringing place in for dogs that are chronically over stimulated, anxious, sep/anx cases. I’ve seen you and cesar both do place with food - is it just teaching younger dogs, or just on introductions? Or are you just countering the excitement with the tscht?

Great question. As always it's dog dependent. With a puppy I'm likely going to use food to engage nose (nose, eyes, ears). You make great points about dogs in rehab. This video was more the intent of teaching owners a simplified way to do this exercise for puppies or an adolescent/adult without major issues formed. I will do a follow up video on how I use it in rehab and you're right a lot of the time I won't use food because of the excitement and/or imbalanced mindset. The scent needs to create the desired effect or else not good to use. Again, appreciate the quality question🙏

Have you ever trained a pure bred Brittany puppy to obey "place" outdoors? e.g. in the presence of birds, squirrels, rabbits, etc? This little hunter I have is a challenge!

Sorry but if your dog isn't a service dog then you don't need to be training this command for the purpose of taking it into restaurants. Take your pet to pet friendly places or leave them home, don't pass them off as a service dog to skirt the laws! So tired of this.
