My son and I are sharing interest in ultralight gear and have purchased some nice Daiwa Presso rods since subbing to your channel. Please let me know what is your recommendation for braid line for trout fishing while jigging? Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences to help us create enjoyable memories!

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      i don't recommend braid, especially for kids and beginners.. Buy some 2 lb fluorocarbon instead.. maybe 3 lb... as thin as you can... If you do float fishing, go for 6 lb monofilament. Braid is a big pain with all the knots..

    How do you choice what color of trout magnets to use?

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      in clear water or when its sunny, i go natural. Otherwise something bright. However pink for some reason works even in clear water. It looks like eggs I think.. Also, if you have very small trout, they are so stupid that it doesn't matter what u put. But with older trout it begins to matter as they become cautious

    Random question, do you have any tips for keeping a super thin JDM rod that is 100% graphite WITHOUT a clear coat from cracking/threading with use or age? Do you store them in a specific way or treat them with anything?

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      no, i don't treat them with anything, and i don't recommend you treat yours with anything, as chemicals seem to work in funny ways. In my last video i showed u the silky rod cases I use. They are super soft and slippery and prevent snags. Other than that, my rods are either in the boat, or in my garage, which is very clean and temperature controlled. So I am not really concerned about mine,but I think your question is legitimate. But my advice would be to be super careful but don't do anything funny with them

    • @Evenaardez
      @Evenaardez 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ifishcatfish Thank you for the well thought out response! Truly it is just the lack of a clear coat to seal the graphite that concerns me the most. Going forward I think I will only order JDM rods that have one, even though the rod I have (tict rocking drift), is an absolutely perfect rod, just seeing the open carbon scares me haha.

  • @myth-hc9df

    victor, i have a question about your rods.
    of course i posted that i just got the air ags rod, absolutely love the rod.
    out of your jdm rods which ones do you consider your favorites?
    i know the eradicator is and the air ags rod, but any others regardless if hard to find or not, which other ones do you just absolutely consider top notch rods.

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I probably love the Eradicator more than any other of my rods, i think because it is so thin and yet so long. Super elegant feel with fish and super sensitive. But the Air AGS is better for twitching, and the $60 presso is better for float fishing, and the Soare XR is the most beautiful rod on the planet and yet most comfortable. I am getting older and see value in other things. Something doesn't have to be perfect for me to love it 100%.

    Is it possible that the bluegill are getting bigger because they do allow some harvest? I can think of three bodies of water near me that biologists are begging people to keep fish because there are too many and growth is stunted. Perch, walleye and lake trout.

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      a lot of things make sense superficially, but when u get into specifics they don't make sense. Bluegills grow extremely slow and not every bluegill has the genes to grow to 10" . Harvesting a 10" bluegill does nothing to reduce the number of bluegill, but hurts the best part of the reproductive population. If you ask me to harvest 100 six-inchers , i will say GO FOR IT! Then you reduce the numbers and don't hurt the fishery. But nobody takes 100 six-inchers. People harvest the best specimen in the lake, continuously, and it is PRECISELY THAT, which stuns the population - harvesting the biggest fish continuously. If this was my lake, i would have an UPPER limit for harvesting. Once a bluegill makes it to 9", harvesting should be illegal. Also once a crappie makes it to 14", harvesting should be illegal. These are the fish that you want on top of the spawning beds in the spring, and they would be, because the males are very dominant and would displace smaller, immature males

  • @johnbetbabanta3724
    @johnbetbabanta3724 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    That rod looks like a work of art. Those guides look like they belong in a museum. I wonder why they advise you to keep crappie. Maybe too many crappie and not enough natural predators to keep the population in check leading to disease and competition for food? Who knows

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They manage the lake for bass and bluegill, and crappie competes for food with both. They are trying to get rid of them and there are very few crappie left in the lake (which is the reason why the remaining units are so large). I kept large crappie from this lake before they told me that and now i feel really bad about it. I will never take another crappie from this lake. I will start harvesting BASS instead, to protest their management. The other TWRA managed lakes around are VFW and Laurel Hill and they also are managed for bass and bluegill and have no crappie.

    • @johnbetbabanta3724
      @johnbetbabanta3724 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ifishcatfish wow. I know bass fishing is america’s cup of coffee, but I’ve never heard of state managed fisheries recommending anglers to harvest other species of fish to boost another species’ population. Doesn’t seem fair to those crappie. Usually only when a species is invasive or diseased or poses a threat to the overall health of the water do they recommend you to take them out of that body of water. Follow your heart Victor. UL fisherman have as much right to fish for their favorite species as bass fisherman do.
