H&Y RevoRing Review: The best filter holder?

- Most filter holder systems slow you down and add bulk to your camera bag. The H&Y RevoRing magnetic filter system looks like a great solution, but how does it perform in the real world? We've been using the RevoRing system for weeks and have the answers.

I request for a comparison video between the magnetic filter system that is out there please (H&Y, Kase, Freewell etc).

Nice guys. Please could you consider doing a high quality filter system roundup, tested against each other, specifically for the optical quality? There’s 4-5 professional systems on the market at least but outside of the practical differences, which is the ultimate glass that doesn’t have any negative affect on IQ.

Another great review. I backed RevoRing CPL&ND 67-82mm since H&Y launched their Kickstarter campaign and get another empty RevoRing 67-82mm for my extra ND filter. Super easy to use and no more filter adapter (Normally, my lens range from 67 to 82). But, frankly speaking, I agree what Chris said that if we could have separated CPL and ND with megnatic, that would be even flexiable and verstile.
Very interesting. Pricey, but not compared to other square filter systems. Not having to use stepping rings is very attractive

I got a RevoRing (just the step-up version) because it can attach to lenses with dented filter threads. My Grandpa recently gave me his set of vintage Nikon lenses from the 60's-80's. Some of them had dented filter threads and, as a video shooter who frequently uses ND, that was a big issue for me. Then I had the idea to try a RevoRing and it attached perfectly. I've had a great time shooting with those lenses lately and my Grandpa is thrilled that they're getting used again.
I also use the RevoRing on my other lenses and it is definitely more convenient than carrying and keeping track of half a dozen step-up rings. It really is a shame that the plain step-up RevoRing doesn't have a magnetic version.

Hi Chris and Jordan, thank you for this, quite illuminating! I may be interested in both applications - still and video. I fancy the R5C but wish it had built in ND for RF lenses. Better still, Sony like variable auto ND!

I wanted to clean the filter that was behind the circular polarizer on my dad's lens and it was a pain to hold onto both ends to actually separate them. I haven't used his DSLR in quite some time now, especially during lockdown, and other things.

Most interesting. I recently purchased de VND from Freeweel and they adresses some of the issues that you mentioned.
As I film a lot of fishing I know the struggle for the perfect setup. You NEED the polarizer for certain shots. But you also want the ND. I recently went for the freewell magnetic filter kit which include a ND32/CPL. Perfect for outdoor fly fishing. I hate the case they included though.
Testing the DJI Mic I see! Looking forward to seeing your impressions of those. I thought about holding out for them, but ended up going for the Rode Wireless Go 2 at the end.
I pre-ordered the DJIs in November. Still waiting.
Hi, What filter system is best if horizon is uneven? Round square or graduated nd? Or Better take multiple exposures and post process?
FYI, you can buy a magnetic frame to attach to your square or rectangular filter and stack in front of the Revoring.
I keep hearing about Kase filters and their systems. It would be interesting to hear how they compare
I wonder how those compare to the Freewell magnetic filters system... they work somewhat different, you don't have to use a CPL but you also can't easily adapt 1 ring for multiple threads...
Readers / DPReview - what do you use now? As a hybrid sports shooter at the mercy of the game, I need quick on/off ND filter systems to shoot stills and shallow DOF vid with one camera. Looking for a solution - HELP!
I have had these for a year. And have enjoyed them. But do notice it's not the sharpest thing. Still better than separate CPL/ND filters bulking up my bag. Great for lightweight.
Hmm… neat way of doing it but yeah… if you start stacking filters not sure how much time this would save on set except when you switch lenses (prime yes, zooms… not so much).
Any opinions on these vs Freewell's Magnetic Quick Swap filter system?

Hey Chris, Jordan. H&Y had just launched a new kickstarter Revoring Swift System, did you guys get any samples? it has pretty much fixed the concerns you have with the original Revoring. Like separate VND 1-5 stops, 6-9 stops without CPL. plus u can add holder for 100x150mm grad NDs. Would love to see how it stacks up to your needs.
Does it accept a step up ring over this in case one has a larger filter?

Too bad Haida does not make a VND like the polarizer. or do they? I often do photos and video and would love the best system to quickly just add a VND quickly to the lens and or a Promist and VND. Thanks!

Can strong magnets affect AF systems? I'm not talking about the far end of the lens...if you're storing these near electronic mounts does that not have the potential to be problematic?
No. Magnets are not an issue for electronics, they were an issue for older hard drives due to the storage platters storing data magnetically. No modern camera uses such a system, they use NAND flash memory which is not impacted by Magnets.
@@ReflexVE You wouldn't want to store HDD or headphones near these filters...or mechanical watches.
Have you guys ever checked out the Kase wolverine magnetic filter system and if so what are your thoughts? Got the slight downside of stepping rings but they are magnetic I believe.

This is superscary - just the other day I was hoping to see you guys doing a review of filter system. I have the first RevoRing system, supported H&Y Kickstarter project and when I saw the magnetic version I though;
“I wonder what Chris and Jordan thinks about this.”
Now I’m thinking;
What if you guys wanted to give a hobby photographer in Sweden a Panasonic S1H camera and make an episode when we chase Northern Lights in Sweden…” ;-)

Ah, more expensive accessories - I have way too many of those. I guess it's really down to how much use you get out of them...
Oh and I'd always be a little worried about having strong magnets in my bag unless it upsets something. Cameras and lenses have magnets everywhere these days...
Stacking ND filters is very, very effective.
I would like to have a magnetic system that let's me use square and circular filters without the need to get a screw in step up ring.
For example:
A 67mm screw in magnetic adapter for circular filters that can stay on the lens forever.
I would use it when I'm hiking and don't won't the unnecessary bulk from a square filter system. One magnetic CPL and I'm good to go.
In addition a fully magnetic step up ring to clip into the 67mm magnetic adapter to get a big CPL and use square filters (i.e. for shooting with a tripod etc).
The Kase magnetic system comes close but doesn't have the option of a fully magnetic step up ring
A fully magnetic step up ring would only be marginally faster than attaching the Revoring...and the Revoring is more universal.

Hello! Based on the issues you still have with this system (especially always having a CPL) looks like you might want to take a look at the K&F (or Kase - interchangable) magnetic systems. They are soo much smaller and they come with a base option which is just the magnet with no glass (and as well the base with CPL or the the ND). Just get the size of the largest lens you have and stick the dumb magnetic bases permanently on a step ring for every other lens that's smaller (no need for unsticking that later!).
Or stick the magnetic base permanently on a Revoring...then you don't need multiple step up rings.
The biggest issue with ND filters is color shift. I am disappointed that this review did not address that concern.
I love the concept, but I wish the VND+CPL one had the ND filter removable or if it went to like 0.5. With MFT I sometimes can't afford to lose a single photon lol, and I don't need or want an ND filter for stills. Also I hope Hoya is going to make something similar!
The unit we are showing is just Polarizer. No built in VND. That does mean buying two revorings though for when you want VND or not.

It's a pity that the drop in system is also copied from H&Y k series. In fact, the two systems ,RevoRing and drop in system are both invented by H&Y
I had them fall off my lens twice and had to send it off to get fixed.
With t’ lack of depth of field on t’ gh6, I’m distracted by the environment, looking fo squirrels, er birds to release t’ boredom...🤪
You are forgetting one really important point. Magnetic filter systems are not good in high wind environment. They simply fly away.
Mmm...have enough disposable income would be easy to make one of these without the polarizer....LOL! Hammer and chisel time!! Little fine sandpaper to clean up the edges.
Rf 28-70 feels extremely left out.

Note: Revoring is impractical to use without a cap (again it costs extra). After using few days, I would say revoring wont solve any issue really, a lense adapter ring with magnetically detachable CPL and filters are the best. Can leave the adapter ring on the lens itself. If we can find an adapter ring with enough depth for a UV filter/lens protector which can b always left on the lens, best solution. Revoring without caps need to be removed everytime you put your system in the bag and fit again. Fitting the revoring is not that pleasant experience. Its not that easy to grab those spring rings and twist.
Chris looks a lot younger with the longer hair and without the beard. He seems to have got a bit chubbier (especially in the face) though 😆
