"only filter you ever need..." except I don't use variable ND anymore😏 Seriously that mounting solution looks interesting and kudo to them for their creativity!
The ring is pretty cheap, at 25-35 USD, but holy crap the actual filter is expensive. The only time I use a variable ND is for waterfalls. Where it is pretty darn useful, but a regular one is good enough for me. I occasional use a circular polarizer. But I can't think of a need where I would want to have both on the camera at the same time.
yeah, I'd rather use me own filters. However... back when I built my set I decided 77mm was about as much I'd need and everything since has been of that standard. But... non of these adapters are native to 77mm. Which imho is a bit of a fail as I think a lot of folks are in my situation having picked 77mm.
Thanks for getting this out before the kickstarter ends. It looks like an interesting system and a good deal considering how much filters are going for now.
Holy moly Kai it comes in three sizes so you could spooge about $590 for the set or get the biggest the Revoring Variable Neutral Density ND3-ND1000 + Circular Polarizer 67-82mm $199.0 and then $70 for 2 adapter rings and you can hook the ones up when you aren't using them for earrings and pretend to be a gypsy fortune teller
Justed backed it. The 67 to 82mm covers most of my lenses (for landscape anyways). And if the quality is good, the price is actually not bad either in comparison to other products. Especially considering the versatility. Thanks for the video. Would have missed it otherwise!
Any comment on how it attaches to the lens - any risk to damaging the lens thread? Does the 67-82 connect to the 46-62 thread? Backed through your link and looking forward to this.
I don't understand why the image looks so soft? Like at 4:29, that's 6k?? It looks like HD honestly. Viewing 4k on 4k monitor. Very odd. I have seen very sharp footage from te S1H, but this looks very unconvincing. Any ideas?
I wish you would talk about filters more often, because I generally don't understand them very well. I don't know what the different types are, what they do, or when to use them.
2:50 FYI, the Only the 100x150mm Graduated ND glass features Gorilla Glass . The 100x100mm square filter you're holding is Schott B270, not the Gorilla one. Fortunately you didn't follow us dropping the one in your hand. Glad to be featured in your video ;)
There's issue with cheap vari ND filters - they show the cross at longer focal length than normal filters. You can't shoot at 50 mm with filter closed mare than half the way to the max. On wider they are barely even have effect before they show the cross.
Seems interesting! I just got a GOBE variable ND and a step up ring and new lens cap for each of my lenses. That way I have one ND filter that can quickly screw onto any focal length lens I want to use for my videos.
4:40 - I've received mine as I backed this before this review and I can tell you that they did NOT fix the play issue as I have play in my ring (no pun intended), waiting for a response from them on KS!
"The Only Filter You'll NEver Need"- that's how would I call it. Dear colleagues, I just want to share my experience in case you are thinking to buy it. I want to share my experience of non existing support from H&Y as well as bad design. 1. The Lock mechanism is unusable and will not stay firmly, it not secure and will suddenly fall , like it happened to me, and I ensured it's very firm when attached. Did attach by instructions. The filter actually never "locks". It's just get tightened and then again loosens and rotates again, that's how it's built. 2. The X shape pattern on ND is very visible and not usable after ND5-7.
3. There are no markings on ND after ND 5 to 10 ND , so you have to guess. 4. There is grainy pattern when using ND/CPL, compared to my other filters I own(Haida, Tiffen, Hoya). It seems not as clean on the sky. 5. The support is non existent. Will not honor warranty. Will accuse you and say that it's your human error (that's what they told to me) The pins to control ND and CPL where supposed to be touched, to control ND and CPL, but every slight touch can lock out and drop the filter . No secure filter system at all. The company did not honor the warranty and didn't want to fix the filter within the first month of use. Shame company. I was securing and fitting to lens strictly by instructions. Will not buy again from H&Y. I will continue to use my regular, non variable ND's and CPL's from more true photography companies like Hoya, Tiffen and Haida I own. Never to H&Y again. They are for making money I think, not into a photography really. Lack of basic support is bad. Their boorishness to my support request is unacceptable, saying to me that I'm saying nonsense and accusing of wrong use. Just a trash Chinese company in my opinion. 1,2 and 5th point - see if you want this for yourself.
What’s the difference between nd/pl filter? Let me show you, proceeds to explain it perfectly and in the simplest way possible in under 40 seconds. While there’s dudes in TH-cam with 10 minute videos on TH-cam where they still can’t get their point across. You gotta love Kai lol
Can you remind me how much is a step up ring cost? I also don’t think you save much in weight unless you are carrying many lens with different filter size.
Look very careful on their kickstarter page. It sounds cheap but the first few pledges only give you one ring or one filter. Only the very last one of €421 will give 3x the filters + 3x the filter mounts. Very expensive stuff.
Hi, thanks to share the interesting video. Out of curiosity: do you think a variable ND filer is more convenient if it has a lever on the ring to be able to move the lens more easily to shoot videos? Thank you
First i hope you've had a mattress or anything under while holding your camera by the filter. Then, I wouldn't change my "cleverly chosen" filters for one to spectacular to be true. But the gripped adaptive ring ... I'll buy it anytime
How does the filter affect the sharpness of the image and what do you think, how he is a competitor against other high end filter like polarpro or something like those (~250$/€+)
Yeah that’s pretty neat! BUT something I don’t like about filters and I had a question on, its hard to get a lens hood over a filter if at all so if you have an ND and you are out in bright sun light, dust is pretty attracted to the filter, then you have no shade from the sun and boom you see ugly specs of dust and sometimes odd sun flare on the lens.
What's this fading effect you talk about when you get wider than 16mm? Anyone know what he says? I'd love to learn more about the science of that phenomena.
Figured it out. When light enters at an oblique angle, they have a different cross polarization ratio compared to the nominal light coming from the center so you get a radius dependent density
I bought the 82mm version few years ago, this thing pretty useful. But the little knob for the CPL is really annoying. I dropped it a few times and that thing is really hard to find.
This looks really cool but could you maybe go in to a bit more detail as to how you fit existing filters to it? It’s quite a big jump in price to include their own.
If you just get the ring, it has a filter thread on the front. It’s best to check out their kickstarter page and then scroll down, there’s a chart that specifies the size of the filter thread to the corresponding ring sizes.
Kai W thanks Kai! I used to have the manfrotto magnetic filter rings and they were fine, but one slight knock and the filter came off. It didn’t last long. This seems like a decent solution, other than a camera manufacturer giving us what we want; built in ND’s! 😂
stupid question but the sky is exposed better but if you have people they gonna be under exposed :( gradual ND isn't better if you have people in the shot?
"Kai Wong doesn't respect his gear like a true photographer should!" Me: "There's no such thing as a true photographer, Kai is just-" 1:06 Me: "Oh... Actually you might be onto something there...."
The mount is creative. However, no one needs a variable ND filter unless they are incompetent, adding at least four glass (plastic?) surfaces to your light path in order to further degrade your lens.
Why do none of these filters ever work with sun hoods? Do these people not know how bad these VND filters look when sun lands on them at an angle? Edit, i understand this filter is way oversized to fit multiple sized, my problem is fixed mount filters, I honestly wshi someone made a polarizer 67>67 and a companion polarizer with the filter flipped around to turn it into a VND with this also being 67
Ha ha ha, Twickers, I must have missed you by minutes, my mate has the vape shop around the corner from there. Lovely spot and I'm in the market for a decent ND.

K&f concept actually already has a cpl + nd filter all in one, but this variable ring looks awesome :o

Thanks for getting this out before the kickstarter ends. It looks like an interesting system and a good deal considering how much filters are going for now.
I have the Revoring version 67-82mm CPL + VND and I must say that it is wonderful!
Interesting, but I don't do Kickstarter projects. Been burned more than once. If it's not already on the market, I won't have it.
Very cool. I can’t really justify the expense when I’m happy enough with my current filter situation but I can definitely see the appeal.
That mounting is the type of real innovation required, when there are too many size variations between brands and lens types.

that has cracked me up so bad, I am crying with laughter!
How is the actual filter quality apart from the adjusting part? Color cast, sharpness loss, weird stuff?
Can the rings be stacked to completely eliminate the need for step rings?
