Also you said Iran was ruled by Mongols for lots of years, that was mongol empire which was second biggest empire so it’s not surprising. The French in the 12th century called themselves the "Franks", still we call them the French because their society and language already changed back then compared with the Frankish times. How people called themselves is irrelevant, Byzantine is an "historian" name to make it easy to differentiate the latin-based Roman empire and the medieval hellenistic Roman empire. It's convenient, so both names are correct.

Caucasus was more likely to be part of Anatolia I think. Especially the North Caucasus.
Whenever seeing map videos about the middle ages, I feel that it is overwhelmingly surprising for the Roman state to have existed since the archaic regal times, with Ancient Carthage, Athens and Sparta as its contemporaries, until the times of Mongols and Ottomans, with relatively prolonged and strong cohesion as a state. Arab Caliphates from the Rashidun to the Abbasids, after making the Roman state a shadow of its former self and depriving it of the naval superiority within the Mediterranean, along with of the long-held name Romans' Sea(Mare Nostrum), could maintain its unified hegemonic status only for 2 century and some decades from mid-7th to midlate-9th century.

That is indeed a lot of effort, I was waiting for this part since a week, it is a great three part series and all those who haven't watched the first two parts must watch them, also equally as nice.
The mapping this year is better than ever, I found no mistake in the Map, though at 0:24, the bust is not that of Yazid but from the coin of his governor Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad, though it really doesn't matter much.
I'll be looking for more Mapping videos, let's see what you do next:)
He should've made distinctions between the different caliphates. Also didn't see Muawiyahs and al-As rebellion etc. Great for general overview however.

But I agree that Muawiyah's Divided Caliphate from 657-661 and Second Fitna should've been shown.

Your maps are gold,other maps are rather simplistic, i did not know middle east was not few big empires, but balkanized like feudal Europe.

The detail in this video is astonishing, You pretty much got all of the middle eastern states that have ever existed, other mapping vids about the region usually gloss of many of the small countries and dynasties which makes the video oversimplified and bland...good job!!

I only have 2 questions. What does the asterisk by the Khazars mean. Also why did you decide not to include the rulers of Qara Qoyunlu and Aq Qoyunlu since they controlled a significant amount of the Middle East.
I'm not entirely sure what the asterisk refers to, but the word "unknown" deserves an explanation here. We do know many Khazar rulers by name, but we don't know exactly *when* they ruled (there is usually an uncertainty of many decades). This makes it impossible to add them to the video.
qara qoyunlu and aq qoyunlu weren't actual kingdoms, they were just like tribal confederations and possibly were just ruled by high leaders

What are the "Carian Turks" that appear in southwestern Anatolia in the late 1110s? I thought that area was fully subjugated by Byzantium.
Some Seljuk Turks indeed settled in that area after an offensive against Alexios Komnenos.

What a coincidence, I was just seeing right now your previous videos about the History of the Middle East. This one is also an incredible work, but I was surprised not to see the effects of the recent Civil Wars, like ISIS. For example, you could also have put the Iraqi Kurdistan in a lighter purple colour, like you do with client states, since it’s a very autonomous region, culturally different from the rest of Iraq. In the Caucasus, Artsakh could have been mapped as well. But I understand recent history is not easy to interpret. Great work anyways, congratulations.
Frankly, when you compare it to the history of the Near East as a whole, ISIL isn't more than a blip--random noise. It's not even the most important thing he left out (though admittedly you're right that it would be nice to see).
The guy making the video for example failed to show a LOT of things: the Zubayurid state, the Blues (Azariqah in Arabic: it literally means "the blues ones"), the first Muslim Civil War, the Abbasid revolution, the effects of the Tahkim afterward, or the civil war between Al-Amin and Al-Ma'mun, or the anarchy at Samarra (though he does show the aftermath).
And that's just in the span of 200 years marked simply as "The Caliphate".
It's like Showing the Roman Empire without its crises...
Because it's not recognized by most of the countries .
Nobody gonna mention how the Caliphate was able to beat the two super powers of Rome and Persia(at the time) alone???

I find it interesting that Mehmed II viewed himself as a kind of Islamic Constantine; consecrating a new Roman imperium to his Prophet of the Lord of the Universe. Every other dynasty of the empire had won it by right of conquest after all.

The Ottomans post-1453 were a "barbarian" empire that co-opted the (Eastern) Roman legacy, much like the Holy Roman Empire in the West.

It survived longer in fact. Remember that when the Roman Capital of New Rome fell along with the last Roman Emperor in 1453 AD, the government was exiled in the Despotate of Morea, still free Roman territory. After the Despotate of Morea had fallen (along with other roman polities), this government fled to the Mani peninsula, and formed the Republic of Mani, by Roman Greeks who were still free. This Republic of Mani never fell to the Turks, always repeled their occational invasions and declared war on them. Eventually it declared war for the last time in 1821, and merged with the Greek Republic that formed at the same time. Ergo, Roma Aeterna Est!
