    We've been feeding a magpie pair for almost a year now. The feeding became frenetic with mouthfuls of mince, cheese and occasional bread being transported to their nest to feed the two little ones. In the last three weeks these nestlings have become fledglings and in the last week mum and dad have introduced the kids to us. Now we've got two very healthy young magpies that are at our door begging for food more often than the parents. Foods been cut right back as they have to learn to find their own bugs and worms now!

    • @sakura5427
      @sakura5427 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry but they are not supposed to eat mince it messes with their diet, they need to eat 3 times a day and they will then be expecting fancy foods, like mince given to them and starve. Search it up

    • @philxray666
      @philxray666 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sakura5427 A year later and all four are very healthy and happy. Nothing negative at all. They get mince and cheese twice a day, dawn and dusk. The rest of the day we see all of them out on lawns and in gardens foraging for their natural diet. The mince is sprayed with water to prevent it sticking to the inner beak. For the past week though, mum and dad have been shuttling food back to the nest to feed their new season chicks. If they are anywhere near as healthy as the two one year old girls still a part of the family they will be fine. Please don't make a comment that mince meat "messes with their diet" without explaining exactly HOW! Your statement becomes completely meaningless otherwise!

    • @gav1nbeyond
      @gav1nbeyond 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@philxray666 dude a quick google search will tell you how bad this is the mince can rot holes in there beaks, and it doesn't have enough calcium, get meal worms from the pet shop if you must feed them. Birds also can't digest lactose very well, so feeding them cheese is also a no from all Bird experts.

    • @philxray666
      @philxray666 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gav1nbeyond You are correct in your assertions on mince meat. Maybe from days after I wrote this comment every bit of mince meat has been thoroughly sprayed with water to prevent such issues. Small amounts of cheese have done no harm whatsoever except supply any calcium shortage from the mince. After three years they are as healthy as could possibly be hoped for. We've raised two nestings this way and the third has hatched just three days ago. Dad only two months ago or less chased away these same two that had reached two years of age. It was so sad as they were so friendly and wanted to stay but the pressure and attacking from dad to get them to move on was immense and finally they gave up. I hope they found a mob of magpies to be with and are safe in the group.

    • @philxray666
      @philxray666 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gav1nbeyond BTW Tried the dried meal worm repeatedly by refusing them mince for days. All refused outright to even touch it in that time. Other bird species were okay with it but the maggies, no way were they gonna touch it!

      Doubt it's forgotten. Magpies are EXTREMELY intelligent animals. It may have migrated/been driven away, or found a mate. It may also have died, however that's only. One possibility and the greater odds have it still out there. I'm sure if it came back it would recognise you pretty fast, mainly by your voice

      Well, up here in the canadas, we can't really do that, because hawks or eagles will eat them. So we do have a "safe place" for them to go if they feel threatened.

    • @joeglaysher2231
      @joeglaysher2231 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. You shouldn't cage Magpies. They can't be tamed and once they are capable of looking after themselves they will choose to be independent, flying off to seek territory and a mate (both for life).
      Our suburban lawns and gardens are ideal territory and having selected their territory the pair will fearlessly defend it against other magpies, as well as perceived threats such as cyclists, postmen and children. They know who their friends are and where their enemies live!
      The argument that capture and caging is a form of population control is simply wrong: take the male out and another will take over the territory; take the female out and the male will find another mate quite easily. Plant a forest and they'll go elsewhere.
