"Rechenka" is a tragic fable that must have resonated deeply with Diana. The setting is the wedding day of a girl whose impending marriage, about which she otherwise feels joyful, has not been blessed by her parents (and to whom I think, but cannot remember for sure, she had promised that she would not marry without their blessing). The reason the parents have not given their blessing is that they died before her betrothal. Desperate for their blessing, the girl goes to the river - symbolically, the river that separates the dead from the living - in the hope that she might communicate with them -- perhaps indirectly via the spirits - and obtain the blessing she feels she must first obtain. In the superb production in the 2018 TV show "You are Super" that preceded this more intimate performance, the implication of the final scene is that the girl is unable to communicate with her parents while remaining with the living, and so drowns herself. It was only in that original TV production -- which is truly amazing, and in most respects superior to this (still very fine) one -- that Diana was 14. Here, she was a couple of weeks past her 15th birthday.
Diana has opened her solo concerts to this song acapella in darkness. It's hard to imagine what the experience would be to hear this live. One can only hope that someday I'll have the opportunity to witness the amazing artist.
She’s another extremely talented lady from the Eurasian countries. This song has a tiny bit of MiddleEastern vibe. When you follow the migrations, it makes sense.
