How To Know When Your Painting is Finished

How can you tell if your painting is done? This question comes up regularly when I teach so I want to share some of my thoughts on that as well as my best advice.
So how DO you know if your painting is really finished? What do you look for?
I think is important to mention that every painter has their own approach and there is no real right or wrong way. I tried many different ways so what I'm sharing is just what I found works best for me. I always encourage you try new ways and find out what works best for you and your painting journey.
Do you also know the feeling of having gone too far in your painting and wishing that you had stopped earlier? We've all been there and I find it helps to take frequent breaks and not to rush your painting along.
I feel closer I get to finishing a painting the more time I spend looking and less time actually painting. Bonus tip: look at your painting in black and white. If it works in black and white it will also work in color.
At the end for the day YOU are the painter so YOU get to decide when your painting is done :) Happy painting!
