I love that you are repairing grandpas old tool and still use it. When I was 5 my great grandfather and I used to work in his garage and he made me a little wooded toolbox big enough to hold real tools so i could carry some tools of my own to help him while he worked on various projects. Well long story short I still have that toolbox and still use it today and I will be 53 years old this year, so I have 48 years of memories in that little box and I think of my great grandfather every time I reach for a tool from that wood toolbox and I read the engraving he put into the bottom of it. To Craig from G Grandpa Apple Never throw away things that just need a little attention. "1969"

That came out very well, I made a shaving horse to do this very job, but I use an English drawknife where the handles are the other way round, Ash is getting difficult to find now, with all the disease that is hitting them, but we have a few unaffected trees in our garden in France, soak that in linseed oil and it will last far longer than a bought one .The added bonus is that you have some excellent fire starting tinder for when you let your wood burner go out,(which I think would not be often).Chris B.

Great job. Really enjoy your videos. If you want to speed up the job you could make 4 more passes on the table saw set at 45 degrees. This will give you an octagon and remove most of the waste. Then you can do the rest by hand just as you did. There is a trick to doing this without having to do any measuring.

Hi like the video, just one thought, why not take off some of the stock on each corner ripping a 45 degree cut with the table saw, then finish up with the drawknife. Or you could use a rounding over bit in your router, and, knock down the edges with that before doing the finish work. One note about tools, go to estate sales, garage sales, ect. and look for tools made at least forty to fifty years ago, I guarantee you the quality of the steel is much better.

Flaxseed oil, also known as linseed oil. Flax, if not rancid, can be used as a food product, but I believe in the US, if it is marked "linseed" it is not meant to be used in food (may contain preservatives?).

Suggestion: For simple build videos such as this you could probably film the entire video with zero talking. Many people find them relaxing and they appeal to a large audience. You can always make a second video talking about the project and the tools you used if you find a need to explain some things.

A spokeshave would be more the proper tool to finish a round handle, the drawknife does the initial shaping. To peel logs the tool is called a spud. You can also do it with the drawkinife though.

Love the beautiful and rich slide guitar version of Amazing Grace! The music is a good addition. I would love to be able to afford Gränsfors tools. Superior quality, superior price. Great camera angles of your work, showing how sharp your tool is...satisfying to cut ash like that. Is the oil linseed oil? It is a common natural means of preservation.

In the US, the food grade oil is called flaxseed oil, whereas the industrial grade oil is called linseed oil.
Food grade flaxseed oil is also usually cold pressed, whereas I'm pretty certain that most if not all linseed oils on the market use a solvent based extraction process.
Same source plant, but not exactly the same thing, since linseed oil can have toxic chemicals still in it from the extraction process, and might even have some chemical additives to help it dry hard, so using it in cooking or as a supplement might end up in a trip to the hospital.
