    Always was amazed at Bluefish migrations. I'm 67 and I fished during the great Bluefish invasion of the the mid Atlantic inshore waters 1970s and early 1980s. It was a sight to behold every spring and fall from the Outer Banks to New England. Millions of baseball bat sized Blues. On November 28 1982 I was surf fishing Oregon Inlet NC on the Outer Banks and saw what I can only tell you was a 30-40 mile blitz that lasted from sunup to sunset. They were feeding on Speckled Seatrout millions of them too. They would beach themselves to escape the packs of Blues. The locals on OBX would walk up and down the beach just picking up Specs and putting them into buckets.

    There was a time when we had the best winter fishery on the east coast. The Feds decided not to regulate commercial fishing in the NY Bight so now we have a 6 month long saltwater fishery when we used to catch many species until mid January or longer. Whiting, ling cod and flounder were very abundant until greed wiped them out.

    That was great info. I always figured it was a combination of factors that drove their movements up and down the coast. It feels that weather and environmental changes have the most effect on the spawning aspects. And the fluctuations in bait availability along with water temp effect the range that the fish are willing to go. Here in NH and southern Maine it seems the water temp has one of the bigger effects. The Pogies have come back and the blue fish seem to spend more time around us and venture further north. But you guys are spoiled with the longer season, LOL. Our Fall run is usually done by mid-October give or take. Great video and info. Thanks, tight lines!

    Weakfish was believed to migrate south for the winter but there was a report of them migrating out to deepwater wrecks caught on offshore wreck trips article on fisherman magazine years ago.

    This is just one man’s opinion but I’ve been fishing from Jersey to Cape Cod for my whole life and 30-40 years ago they were not as many seals, whales,dolphins etc. as there are now not only do they eat what these game fish eat they even eat these gamefish and this isn’t a complaint I love seeing them while surf fishing but I think they are being overlooked as to the effects they may have on these game fish and they forage.

    Male fluke don’t typically get longer than 16” so, with size limits at 18” and up, they are specifically targeting breeding females. Been to a number of tournaments over the years, where biologists from Rutgers sex all of the fish brought in. I asked what percentage of the weigh ins are females. They stated 99.2%. When I asked why the fisheries council doesn’t address that, and they stated because they don’t listen to biologists.

    Great Vid! I am convinced a small portion of the fluke winter over in the mud in the deep holes of our back bays.
    I regularly catch fluke into November in the back bays of LBI and a lot of them look like they have been buried in that mud and feed on warmer, sunny days!

    The amount of information available on this subject can be overwhelming to say the very least. There are so many "experts" with many valid explanations for why this or that happens but, truthfully, get off your phone, get off your ass and just go fishing!!!!! Having fished New Jersey fresh and saltwater fisheries for over 60 years, I think I have some knowledge of the subject. Historically, saltwater; Yes, I can remember "Whiting" by the buckets, now, gone. Bluefish, by the burlap bag, no limit. Flounder; three guys, 60 a day, no limit that's the same with Fluke. etc., etc. Definitely, things have changed here in Jersey, environmentally true but, It's the environment that has changed. There are so many more people. Where once there were many non-developed stretches of beachfront and backwater bays, now it's condo development ad nauseum but, that's time for ya. Believe me, if you want to catch a striper, or fluke or bluefish AKA "yellow eyed devil", they're there. ALSO, and I believe the most important factor as far as my Jersey coast and its saltwater fisheries goes..."Sandy" From Sandy Hook to Island Beach State Park the destruction to both property and physical coastline were catastrophic. Post Sandy saw the Army Corp of Engineers add approx. 3ft. of additional sand atop existing beaches from Sandy Hook to Island Beach. In some cases, 250ft x 3mi.of totally new beaches were created. Naturally, to protect coastal communities. The "Beach Replenishment Project" I believe, drastically changed the coastline and the fisheries. Add to all this, commercial fishing, population growth, demand for fish globally, regulations, and loss of breeding waters. Why do fish move? It's what fish do. They always have and, God willing, always will.

    Been hearing a lot of people talk about the bio mass shift because of ideal conditions needed for survival. Quite a few are seasoned captains who are on the water every day of their lives almost. This is not a regulatory issue. It's an issue of the fish changing their patterns. The fishermen and the regulatory board in the Chesapeake Bay area are blaming the fishermen in NJ and NY for overfishing, and it's just not the case. The fish are just changing their habitat.

    • @Rick6452
      @Rick6452 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There is a clearly a biomass reduction issue. Its is not just migration patterns which change all the time.

    • @Tracker7266
      @Tracker7266 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Rick6452 If one wants to believe the government data .... be my guest. Who do we know who's telling the truth? If there is a reduction, it's not from the recreational fisherman. I'll blame the commercial fishery on it then.

      I’m a surf fisherman and can say without a doubt it isn’t fishermen hurting stripe bass numbers. Most guys don’t even keep any fish and with the change in size limits we barely see keepers nowadays anyway. I can’t even remember the last time I’ve harvested a fish. I think I may have took one bonus fish a few years back because I like the smaller ones. When I’m on the beach and see hundreds of guys casting I don’t see anyone keeping fish so again I can’t see how fishermen are to blame.
