      nice video , at 4:52 I think that is a 1940 mccormick tractor , I tried fixing one before but it was hard to fix , it had 2 fuel intake and I didn't know if its gas or diesel although it was probably diesel , ended up scraping it

      Dude I've never been to Montana or Alberta or anywhere west but I would never go hiking without a weapon , wild animals are generally friendly and I've never had a problem with wild animals and I don't hunt , I think hunting should be banned , I think people who sport hunt are chickenshit , but if I'm hiking in some remote mountain I would probably take a weapon , wild animals are unpredictable although wildlife is generally friendly

    My great-grandfather (98 on march 19th this year) is still driving, ranching, and walking around just like normal. I asked him one time when the last time he rode a horse was and he said that it was when he was 94 years old.

    My father passed last year and was born the same year as John. John's mental acuity and physical mobility is amazing for a man his age. Both men were born 15 years after the Titanic sank, were 2 years old when Wyatt Earp died and were born 24 years after the first Wright Bother's flight. They both lived through remarkable times.

      RIP to your dad. My grandmothers friend made it to 104 and just passed away this month just after his birthday. How crazy it would have been to live thru everything that’s happened. Born in 1918. Just 10 years after the first ford model T was made - back when the cheapest model was $800 ($18000 today)

    What an amazing person John is. I can't believe he lives by himself through Montana winters. His only regret in life is not relaxing enough. I think that is why he has made it to 95. God Bless you John.

      Yup, gotta keep it going. A lot of people check out shortly after retiring (the ones who make it that far, that is) because they have nothing going on anymore. I'm sure not getting married extended his life some too, haha.

    I’m almost 60 and still have my grandmother who is 97. She’s very much like this gentleman and I’m very lucky to have her.

    My father was born in 1924 and just passed away last year in 2021 at age 97 . The day he die was the day he drove his pick up truck back to his home in West Allis in Wisconsin from Ho Chunk Casino in near central area of Wisconsin . He drove his pick up truck there almost once a week in his 90’s . He’s Cantonese of Italian descent. RIP papa .

      @@ICcreepers He does not speak norwegian. With a norwegian father and german mother, they spoke english at home. A 1.5 hour movie following him through all season at his farm, made by a norwegain, is now running at norwegian TV, It was filmed in several stages about 2017-2020.

    He’s amazing for his age. That lifestyle has kept him strong and mentally sound. I know a 81 year old cowboy who ropes when they do the branding. He wakes up at daylight about 5:00 am to still work the ranch.

    I have known John for 20+ years, he is a character. Great guy.
    When he was in his 80's he had a Bull that started giving him issues and getting violent, and he got it into the pen, got a couple of ropes on it, and got it stuffed into a trailer and took it to billings all by himself.
    He is featured pretty heavily in a documentary I did with Robert Osborn about Photography, Bob took the photos on John's wall.

    Loved loved loved this video!❤❤❤ My grandpa grew up near Livingston in Wilsall. He would have been Five years older than John and I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't know him.❤ Grandpa's dad was also from Norway--like John's folks. 😊 I remember Great Grandpa Louie, who had never seen a sugar beet, so we stopped and picked one up. Grandpa cut into it, and G. Louie thought that was quite the thing! 😁 My Grandpa grew up in that beautiful country--left home 🏡 at 14 and became a sheep 🐑 herder. When we were growing up, they took us camping 🏕 all the time on the Boulder River. Thank you 😊 for letting us meet this great man, John. What a wonderful attitude for living he has. ❤❤❤ He's a great example to me. 😊

    John is amazing. My Grandparents went to Montana in the early 20s. It was rough. The air was bad due to mining of metals. The first two children got very ill, breathing that bad air. It still seems to be the wild west to me. I have an old photo, with my Grandfather sitting on his horse, somewhere out there in 1918 or so. Great video!

    It did my heart good to hear him say "shivy" for "Chevy." That's how it was pronounced here in Colorado when I was a kid, 60+ years ago. I wonder if his dad ever met my grandpa, who also served in France in WWI. I'm glad a few people like him are still around!

    It's all about living and existing where there is nothin and no one. Moved to the middle of nowhere a year ago. Best decision for my overall health. Loved this episode. He's incredible.

    Very touching to see John making the best out of his life. My wife's grandmother is also born in 1927. She's still with us and she still lives at home in the same house for 65 years now in the country John's accordion was built. Would love to hear John play once again. By the way: what a beautiful landscape!

    This man was featured in Norwegian theaters in a movie in 2021 entitled “John; The Last Norwegian Cowboy.”
    Great film. Love his Nordmann heritage … ❤️🇳🇴

      @@8_days_a_week no, John lives in Montana. But his family moved to America from Norway. Some Norwegian film makers came to Montana and filmed him for this documentary.

    What an amazing character, John !! His memory and knowing dates on everything is amazing !!!!
    His sight , hearing and getting around is so extremely amazing at that age !!
    And talking about digging his own grave besides his parents. John is very rare and someone needs to truly do a documentary or book on John.
    He is truly a rare breed and need to be known for sure !!

    Awesome video as always Peter! My Granddad passed away from cancer 2 years ago. He was 95, only a month away from 96. He was as Montana cowboy as it gets and lived there his entire life. He was also a Purple Heart veteran from World War II. He definitely had a lot in common with this man.

    I had the pleasure of meeting quite a few men and women cow pokes of a similar age with my grandparents at their hand-built cabin on their ranch in Eastern Idaho. We were all of Norwegian descent. The work ethic was incredible. I'm blessed to have had such strong mentors.

    My great grandma was 95 I was 7. I remember all her stories of the times she grew up in. Great depression. She had 11 kids. She was just as witty like him. What a amazing man. God be with him🙏

    My Father was born in the same Year, but he had to join WWII after he finished middle school with 16 in 1943.
    He was for about 2 years in the War against Russia.
    1 Month after the War ended, he went 18.
    He had physically no scratch, but was mentally destroyed.
    He got with 56 his first heart attack and with 58 the second and died.
    I wish this old man a good health, that he can getting 100 in good condition.

    My husband's grandma is going to be 101 in December, her hearing and eyesight isnt doing well but her mind is sharp as a tac. We live in rural west central Iowa and she still lives in the farm where she raised all 10 of her children. It's absolutely amazing to think of all the changes she's seen in the world. I always think of how many miles her legs have put on. Her family also farmed with horses for many many years. She actually lived through the dust bowl in Nebraska and then moved to Iowa. It's pretty amazing. She's got 10 kids, 35 great grand children and almost 80 great great grand children. What a legacy this woman will leave. Thanks Peter for always having wonderful content!!!

    Peter that was unreal! Thank you for giving voice to the elder. Yes so many elders (and not so old) are bored with life just looking to go, to end suffering, that's a nice lesson he's givin, not suffering from loneliness or poverty... It changes the perspective. I appreciate it!

    Very heart warming and interesting how this man really lives moment to moment but can zip back and forth across time , his history, without a hitch.     Reminds me of my grandpa who spent 3 months in the heat of the Texas summer building a new dam for his pond at 91 years old on a tractor for 12 hours a day, smoking cigars while he did it. He lived to 96.

    Love this man, my mother was born and raised In Ryegate Montana. We went back every summer to see grandma and family there. They were all ranchers had cattle, horses. What's amazing my mother was Norwegian-Swiss as this man is also Norwegian. Love when he says the road is "a beautiful mess" 😂🤣. He talks with common sense = which isn't common anymore 😂

My grandparents owned a restaurant in Liberty where the old Arthur Treacher's was a very long time ago before it was Arthur Treacher's and before they had my father and moved to Fowler where they started a farm and built a new house that I now own and live in. But I remember the stories about WW2 from my grandfather and my grandma working in the factories and to hear how people came together for the war was amazing. I'm worried these days that wouldn't happen if there were to be a WW3.

    YES! It's him.. it's freaking John! Some while ago (2021) I saw the documentary about him, on the Norwegian state channels streaming site. A doc called ''Last Norwegian cowboy''. Also, Montana is so beautiful. I get why it's called the Last Best Place, and why the ppl there fight for it to stay just that.
    Thanks Peter for giving me an update on him. So good to see he still up and about.

    Wow this man is the same age my grandfather would’ve been. It’s amazing to see someone from his generation living a different life. It’s just amazing to show how different life has always been for different people in different places. I mean with modern technology I’m watching a man that lived for over 8 decades at the same time as my own grandfather who never would have seen him. Amazing and rather humbling, thank you.

    Peter, the research you do to find these amazing people is second to none 👏. As someone not American I’m fascinated by these real stories. Coming from Ireland I feel a connection to these farming ranchers 🐮🐎. I will cherish this series and this episode, we should all listen to our elders stories such a life and what an outlook he still has. Bravo

    Loving your videos! John is amazing… God bless him. He never had a wife, but he sure did acquire a collection of vehicles! So interesting to speak to the elderly … so much wisdom and history. My Dad died one week shy of his 91st birthday and I will miss our chats till the day I die.

    My dad is 94 he's a Utah/Montana cowboy born and raised all is life cowboy.
    He just drove himself from Utah all the way to Montana for my baptism on this coming Sunday.
    Also he's going up in the mountains horseback to do a couple weeks camping at some high mountain lakes while he's here.
    Yes he has a clear mind and he can tell some stories also and the memories these 90 some year old cowboys have is just unique.
    He's on the go all the time never stops to rest.
    He lives in Corvallis Montana
    His name is Andy Scott.
    And his daughter is Vicky Scott Carter a champion barrel racer.
    And her son Colton Carter is also doing very well in the rodeos.
    I'm sure if you'd like to meet up with him he'd meet up with you and if you felt like you could handle a horseback camping trip up into the mountains to the lake he'd probably enjoy your company.
