Eric Satie was pure genius, and I do not use that term often. His music was timeless, which is one of the hallmarks of a musical genius. If his compositions were first played today, he would be revered for his originality. Pretty amazing considering he died in 1925! I love the simplicity and how he uses dissidence so well inside melody.

Satie had a rough life with his drinking problem, he loved very few, but used that loneliness to compose a lifetime of music!

      Interesting.

    • @shadowk3
      @shadowk3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

Those burdened with genuine natural skill and/or talent often do not lead happy lives. I feel it's because inside they have a something others do not which allows them to create beauty or have original thoughts, while at the same time requiring a lonely soul as the vessel of that ability. So many amazing artists, musicians, inventors, painters etc.. had very troubled lives. I think it's simply because they understand something others do not, and that perspective is a lonely one. It's a viscous circle I think. The interesting thing is in a large portion of all classical music, there is an aire of sadness or lonesome wandering.

      As Neil Peart put it:
      "I hear their passionate music
Read the words that touch my heart
I gaze at their feverish pictures
The secrets that set them apart
When I feel the powerful visions
      Their fire has made alive
I wish I had that instinct
I wish I had that drive...
      It's cold comfort
      To the ones without it
      To know how they struggled
      How they suffered about it
If their lives were exotic and strange
They would likely have gladly exchanged them

Loved his music in this video, but I'd like to explore more of his works. Judging from I just what I finished reading in Wikipedia, it seems he lived alone all of his life, save one short love affair he had with an artist's model, who after about six months left him So sad, but not many of us with the happiest of lives are able to leave a legacy of compositions for the generations to come.

Films are the last stop for many of the classical sounds. Many film composers do indeed utilize a lot of those sounds. I find that pieces of beautiful music such as Gymnopédie No.1, Barber's Adagio for Strings, George Winston's Winter and many of the great works by film composers like Ennio Morricone, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Joe Hisiashi and John Barry and so, so many others are the soundtracks to so many of the beautiful, poetic, poignant and often heartbreaking posts that accompany these beautiful songs. If nothing else, the internet and TH-cam have made available such beauty to all who have ears to hear, hearts to feel and tears to shed and in doing so allows us each to know and to say that we do matter and life in the end is a beautiful mystery.

Some of the best music, of which Satie is the patron Saint, is JUST WHAT ONE LEAVES OUT. Instead of filling in every silence with basic, wilted licks. On the other hand. I would welcome the joy of doing these arrangements -at home by myself with a glass a scotch-

Even if you're not a fan of classical music, you simply must listen to Satie, Ravel, Debussy et al. They are to their period as the Beatles were to theirs: timeless. This is a gorgeous collection and the artwork is spectacular.

Gracias!!

How someone can possibly bring the senseless monotony of our lives to our ears and it still sounds absolutely beautiful ? Life even with its mind-boggling complexity and paralyzing pessimism flows so effortlessly beneath our petulant and rambunctious existence. It goes forever with no demand or infringement, no turbulence and stop ........it goes forth and take with it all our vacuous universe to that ever-receding point at the end of that perpetual linearity with not a shadow of a purpose. And it is beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.

ok - so, I got here from another youtube comment under a Jack White's live performance video and for some reason, I immediately "fast forwarded" at 16:40 (Gnossienne no 1) and I started to listen to that and I thought 'this perfectly captures a melancholic feeling of things that have yet to happen, things that will never happen and things that have already happened and never will again' and I teared a little and then it hit me: it's the soundtrack from The Painted Veil. beautiful movie and absolutely beautiful music - thank you!
