Hi. You are right to question how many don't brief trainees in the classroom first, this is my experience and I'd have much preferred a briefing like this prior to the driving ,even at the expense of less driving time .
Fantastic video. I've 'shared' this on FaceBook (I hope you don't mind?) because SO many drivers either have always been confused, or have simply forgotten. Like good manners, knowing where to be, what to do, and how to indicate, makes driving so much less stressful for oneself, and all those around you.

Yes, so if the third exit is follow the road ahead, then you would require the left-hand lane on approach. Good to see the fellas, informative information as always. Very well articulated in a concise manner, many instructors could take a leaf from your book.
Another useful video. Why do some mini roundabouts have give way markings rather than the single dashed lines? Should it make a difference to how drivers should approach them?
Roundabouts are nightmare people don’t signal or give wrong signals or people over speed on roundabouts.Large roundabouts should be always controlled by traffic lights to prevent disaster.
Hi guys, I've watched loads of your videos and the reason i came back to this is cos i failed twice now on the same thing, i failed Thursday and just now 😢 what i failed with was, i used a bus as a blocker and a car to my right on the roundabout switched lanes to come around the back of the bus and i had to brake hard to stop and Thursday a car came shooting out at a different roundabout so by time i pulled off the car was on me so i had to brake hard to stop again, rest of the driving was great and i was so proud of it all apart from pulling out in time at roundabouts. Absolutely gutted, any other tips although this video is amazing. Thanks for all the effort you put in. Also ive been taught at mini roundabouts to only signal as i come off it and not to signal when i come on to it, is this wrong because in this video i noticed you said the opposite. Also ive been taught if there is no road marking coming upto a roundabout then i can take the middle of the road but if there are marked lanes i have to stay in the lane. Thanks again
So sorry to hear about that Jake. These roundabouts can be a bit tricky. It can always be a little bit challenging using a large vehicle like a bus as a blocker, because your observation is reduced heavily, (By the Bus) and the chances of a small car or motorcycle creeping round can be quite high. This is especially the case when we test in Croydon south London. If vision on approach to the roundabout is reduced for example buildings or trees then reduce the speed on approach, so the observation can be a lot higher for that speeding car. With regards to mini roundabouts, absolutely not, imagine how you would feel if that vehicle turning left or right didn't indicate on approach, it would be extremely frustrating. Therefore indication on approach is absolutely necessary however, with the mini roundabout indication to leave is not. With regards to paint on the ground, read the highway code. This states if there is no paint on the ground, then left lane for left turn, left lane for straight on. right lane for a right turn. Obviously if it's tight then, of course you would struggle on approach, this is where you're going to use your Position, Speed and Look technique. If there is paint on the ground, giving you a designated lane then this is the lane you should be in. However again if it's tight, then a struggle may be required, depending on the category of vehicle you're driving. Hope this helps if you've got any problems or questions, please give us a call. Kind Regards Paul
Thank you so so much for the reply, I have my class 2 again on Wed 7am then my test again on Wed at 9.38am. Third time lucky and all that lol. You've helped me and so many others out there and we all appreciate it 🙏🏻
Brilliant video im going for my hgv this year and just been trying to get some pre knowledge in before i start the course Hahah not all us m3 owners are that bad on roundabouts 😂 😂
@@NationalDrivingCentre i hated it on the motorbike and hate it in the car Pretty sure left lane ends up being 1st 2nd 3rd exit Right lane ends up being 3rd & 4th exit Unless it’s a BMW driver
I passed my c + e with the national driving Centre Croydon Great easy people to talk to nice company if you listen you will get the training done and get your pass I had a wonderful instructor called Andy real stand up guy it's always nice to drive in the summer😁
I get this but my examiner on really busy roundabouts put me on a minor for undue hesitation for not going but I always felt on very busy roundabouts of unpredictable vehicles vs a slow class 2 lorry
This can be very true, but this is where you're using your experience. When you say unpredictable vehicles you're thinking of the clues that we look for to tell us where they may go. Remember you're not new at driving. You're just new driving this category so using your experience and looking for the clues to tell you where they may go as for the slow class two lorries, there are many times when they may try and help you, or we can use the slow speed as an advantage. We are not saying this is easy and it takes practice and an understanding of the vehicle that you're driving, for example, how to position it and how fast it will pull away. Hope this helps. Thank you so much for your comment and input. 👍👍👍👍
19:06 I should have thought why you do not indicate left on exiting a mini-roundabout when turning right is nothing to do with being busy. Surely it is because all drivers know which way you are going from the beginning and if you did signal on exit there is no time for other drivers to react to your signal. They already know your course anyway.
Unfortunate not Keith, when negotiating a mini roundabout if we were to indicate as we mentioned in the video, the back of the the vehicle may not have entered the roundabout yet, and therefore indicating left at this stage could be misleading for people behind you or approaching the roundabout. As we know from the highway code, an indication indicates intention of direction, it does not always mean that the driver is going to follow through with what they're going to do . Rule 103 Signals warn and inform other road users, including pedestrians of your intended actions. You should always give clear signals in plenty of time, having checked it is NOT MISLEADING to signal at that time use them to ADVISE other road users before changing course or direction, stopping or moving off cancel them after use make sure your signals WILL NOT CONFUSE OTHERS. Remember that signalling does not give you priority. We hope this clears up any confusion. Thank you so much for your input. 👍👍
@@NationalDrivingCentre But drivers already know which way you intend to turn with the initial indication, You are now not signalling because the back of the vehicle has not entered the roundabout? Drivers of any vehicle exiting a mini-roundabout subsequent to turning right are advised not to signal left. This already gives the instruction of what to do not signal on exit. If what you say were true you would have to consider size of min-roundabout and whether you had a short vehicle such as a loose artic tractor then indicate under certain specific circumstances which would be nonsense. Similarly you would be signalling left when driving your car as they are universally short.
Another good video. Would an examiner take exception to you confirming where he'd asked you to go by repeating it? Also, if you find yourself in the wrong lane, I take it best practice would be to stay there - even if it means going in the wrong direction (?)
A simple confirmation to confirm you've heard him he's fine I probably wouldn't be repeating the order back verbally, however definitely repeating it back in your head to help build your plan for the roundabout. Yes, if you find yourself in the wrong lane then definitely be prepared to go the wrong way to try and fix a mistake can be extremely more dangerous than just going the wrong way. Thank you so much for your comment and your questions. I hope this helps. Kind Regards Paul 👍👍👍
So nice video but I dont get it with the bus in one of the red bus companies the instructor says on turn right position to the right turning left position to the left the way you sat straddled was for turning left in avoiding the kerb on your left then when you exit in the roundabout the way you exit this is considered that you just had cut off the vehicle on your right even though it will just sit behind you so what is wrong here? Talking about Bexleyheath roundabouts exam routes
I'm so sorry, JC I'm just a little bit confused here. The main thing to remember when navigating a roundabout is the size of your vehicle. If you remember what dictates the lane position, is it the white line or is it the kerb, obviously the kerb is going to be more important, so on approach if you do need to straddle, then absolutely take that defensive positioning. Let's put that aside and now imagine the roundabout it's very large, if there is no paint on the ground and you are turning left at the roundabout then you will require Lane one on approach. If you're following the road ahead second exit, you will still require Lane one on the approach if you're turning right on the roundabout, let's imagine third exit you will require the right hand lane. If there is paint on the ground, then this becomes different, and if you've got two lanes, turning right, then you will require the left-hand lane of the choice. I hope this helps, and if you've got any questions or problems, please give us a call. Kind Regards Paul 👍👍
Failed my test the other day in HGV for not going straight over a mini roundabout when I was taught you have to try going around as much as possible not just drive straight over, now I’m worried for my next test what do I do? Go straight over or try to go around as much as I can without mounting a curb etc my instructor even said I was right to try going around
The best thing to do is trust the highway code, which states make an attempt where possible. There is no point trying to make things extremely difficult for yourself. There is a really good reason why it's a blob of paint. Best of luck for the next one. 🤞🤞👍👍👍
Say for example if I take the overtaking lane to turn right a turn right end up on the overtaking lane then move back to the left lane would that be a serious fault in driving test
This would all depend on the size of the roundabout and who is around you and what they do because of what you've done. For example, if there is no one around you when this happens in this could remain as a minor fault. However, when there are other road users around you, this has the potential to put them in danger as well. Also the size of the vehicle, for example, category, C,C1, D or D1 could be okay, however the C+E would give you far too many blind spots making it very difficult to see anyone around you and you are putting them in danger. We hope this helps, if you have any questions please give us a call. Kind Regards Paul.👍👍
I understand the left lane left turn instructions what else would you use the left lane for, would it be possible to highlight when the right lane used, I have watched other videos regarding use of right lane I am found I'm getting different instructions for the use of the right lane. Thanks everyone keep up the good work 👌
@@shaynewalsh1950 if there's no paint on the ground, then the left lane can be for left, turns and follow the road ahead, however if there is paint on the ground telling you the left lane is left turn only then obviously alternative lane to go straight on would be required. In the same way, if there is no paint on the ground, the right lane is a right turn only and again, if there's paint on the ground, giving you multiple lanes are turning right down, the left lane of the choice would be required. Obviously, the reason behind this would be, in the right hand lane, knowing that there is a vehicle on a blind side (the left side) doing the same manoeuvre. I hope this helps and clears up any questions. If you've got any points, please give us a call. Kind Regards Paul 👍👍👍👍👍

Im doing my c+e and i hate roundabouts because nobody actually signals. I failed my first exam because someone came in to the roundabout and i went in thinking hes going straight, then he turned right without signaling.
This happens so often, so sorry to hear that. I know it's easy to say after the fact, but just remember the top tips from the video eye contact, speed on approach and Lane discipline. These are all factors that are going to help you decide where these idiots that don't signal could potentially go. Best of luck for the next one hope all goes well 👍👍🤞🤞
Hi I been told by hgv driving instructor that at mini roundabouts you still indicate left if you going straight ahead Is that for real or you are wrong????😂
Unfortunately not, as we said in the video, you are too large to be indicating by the time the front of the vehicle has got onto the roundabout. The rear of the vehicle hasn't even reached the roundabout yet and any indication could be misleading.
The HGV driver who told you that is complete pratt, who doesn't have a clue about roundabouts Indicate LEFT and go straight on! Everyone around you will plan their driving for you turning left, and you don't.

🤣Thank you so much. Best of luck for the training. 👍👍👍👍
24:45 that looks Like a roundabout in Rotherham 😅 i hate that bloody roundabout too no one ever seems to be in the right late when entering it
Exactly, right, yes, it is a bit of a challenge🤬🤣🤣👍👍.
@@NationalDrivingCentre i hated it on the motorbike and hate it in the car
Pretty sure left lane ends up being 1st 2nd 3rd exit
Right lane ends up being 3rd & 4th exit
Unless it’s a BMW driver
I passed my c + e with the national driving Centre Croydon Great easy people to talk to nice company if you listen you will get the training done and get your pass I had a wonderful instructor called Andy real stand up guy it's always nice to drive in the summer😁
Thank you so much for your kind and honest words, it really means a lot. 👍👍👍 and well done.
That BMW M3 can go anywhere even when it indicates left 😂😂😂😂😂😂 made my day ( btw I drive Skoda estate ) you've got a sub. 👏👏👏

Thank you for this tutorial
You are more than welcome 👍👍👍
@@NationalDrivingCentre well I have an hour before a re-test so I’ll work on the roundabouts which has been my main issue
Very informative and helpful video guys; roundabouts give me the willies.
Thank you so much 👍👍👍👍
Excellent, need more field legible videos
Thank you so much. 👍👍👍
Rule 103
Signals warn and inform other road users, including pedestrians of your intended actions.
You should always give clear signals in plenty of time, having checked it is NOT MISLEADING to signal at that time
use them to ADVISE other road users before changing course or direction, stopping or moving off
cancel them after use
make sure your signals WILL NOT CONFUSE OTHERS.
Excellent mates
Thank you so much👍👍
LOL The irony of that car pulling out on the Iveco in the intro 😂
So funny 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love it thanks 👍👍🙏🙏
No problem. thank you so much 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Really helpful thank you.

Did Paul appear as a guest on a tv show called , hell on the highway ?
Yes i did👍👍👍😬😬😬 what did you think?🤞
@@NationalDrivingCentre it was good 👍🏻
Good job
Thank you so much 👍👍
The highway code also states indicate to let other road users know tou are leaving the roundabout 🤔🤔🤔🤔
Very true 👍👍👍

Do you have footage of parking on the left and moving off thanks all.
Not at the moment. Thats one for the future 👍👍
I failed my psv for slowing someone down. Done my checks no cars coming from the right. So moved on and a car come flying from the right speeding. Failed me

Spiral roundabouts tend to confuse people.
Very true, they can be very confusing at times. 👍👍

🤣🤣Oh no, Best get another one ordered pronto 👍👍
Hi I been told by hgv driving instructor that at mini roundabouts you still indicate left if you going straight ahead
Is that for real or you are wrong????😂
Unfortunately not, as we said in the video, you are too large to be indicating by the time the front of the vehicle has got onto the roundabout. The rear of the vehicle hasn't even reached the roundabout yet and any indication could be misleading.
The HGV driver who told you that is complete pratt, who doesn't have a clue about roundabouts
Indicate LEFT and go straight on!
Everyone around you will plan their driving for you turning left, and you don't.
