My cats do not like the cone either, but I found on Amazon a post-surgical suit for female cats, it covers their stomachs but still allows them to use the litter box and eat without a problem. My male cat also fought with the plastic cone and for him I was able to find plush toy-like collars that are more comfortable for them, he wore the strawberry collar.
Same here. Only one of my dogs ever bothered his stitches and needed one, but he found it so depressing that I improvised an outfit for him with some of my clothes. Worked really well.
