    I think with the newer varieties in store that this would be great to redo a taste test like this

    Growing the J, Black Trifele this year. Thanks. Need to do this again with other varieties, and other veggies. Great video.

    I raised the Japanese Trifele for the first time this year and it became our favorite...our second favorite is Amish Paste.

    What a great,creative idea for a video! And your mom looks so young! Looks like you all had a ton of fun doing this. I'd like to try that Jersey Devil paste. Is this what you use in your sauce?

    You'll need to do this again with the 87yr old tomato!

      It’s not a real tomato taste test without the Crimson red tomato. I think it’s been a couple years now so it’s probably close to time for it to be sold to the viewers.

    Can you list the winners? I cannot understand what one of the names is...is it Tasty Lee?? I didn't see that one for sale on your site or any similar sounding name

    Nice video. Was nice to see others involved in a different way. Your mum looks very sweet, she must be so proud of you :P I currently only grow Roma's but will definitely try these others, now that I know. Thx.

    Amy made a really good point - some tomatoes taste better cooked/put into recipes than eaten alone. It would be great to do something like this for sauce, salads etc! Looks like you all had a lot of fun!

    interesting! I grew grape tomatoes this year and they were exceptionally sweet. They produced like crazy & everyone ate them like popcorn. I've never seen these trifels, will look for them. Which of these tomatoes would you suggest for sauce & canning?

    How do the Japanese Black compare to the Cherokee Purples?

    • @MIgardener
      @MIgardener  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +TigerSaint About the same, but the J. Black Trifelle is much more meaty.

  • @anneirenej
    @anneirenej 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    LOL at the grassy taste. I will have to see if I can get the trifels to grow here. It is funny that the tomatoe varieties we usually get at the store had the least flavor. Interesting information. thanks Luke.

    Well, I guess I'll be trying the Japanese Trifele next year.
    I do tend to plant a lot of romas to use in salads and for a lot of cooking, but they aren't really the most flavorful.
    I did enjoy this concept :)

  • @Claudia80nin

    Thats wonderful :) Please make a note on Facebook when you put them up so I can get some. Are they determinate or indeterminate? I grew Marglobes this year and they ended up tiny with a tough skin and don't think I will be growing them again.

    Very cool video, and it was so nice seeing your mom :-) After this, I'm going to have to start trying more kinds of tomatoes, I think I've been depriving my taste buds of the best tomato varieties out there lol

    I agree, Old German is a wonderful tomato, excellent flavor and texture. I've had Roma's that were mealy and flavorless, but some that were juicy and sweet, I think the growing conditions have a lot to do with it. Great taste-test and panel, loved it!

    Best taste test video on youtube, nice one Luke! Funny how your taste buds changed from last year, or possibly the growing conditions. Last year the Black Truffle (black trifel?) was one of your least favorites if I remember correctly.

    I remember watching this taste test when you first posted it. I was reminded of this video last Fall when I attended (but didn't participate in) a similar, yet much more thorough (maybe too thorough - lol) type of tomato test. These people performed the test in a tournament format. The 20 "contenders" were divided into 10 pairs. Each pair was taste tested with the testers drinking water between each taste to "cleanse the palette". The "winner" of each of these would move forward to the next round and be paired against another "winner" of the previous round until the top taste winner was determined. It all seemed a bit overkill to me but logically it made sense. I don't even remember the name of the variety that won - lol. I'm personally not quite enough of a tomato connoisseur to justify all that effort. But while I was there, I couldn't help but remember this video. Sorry for the long comment. This video popped up in my "suggested videos" page and it just took me back to this video and that contest. I just wanted to share that with you and your viewers.

    Horses for courses so they say. We're growing Big Boys and Early Girls. Not much difference in taste, but quite a bit in size and in production. Early Girls come early (early July in Iowa) and often throughout the season. Big Boys come a week or so later (midJuly), but not in the daily quantity of the mid-size Early Girl. It's nice knowing that on any given day, I can expect something from the garden. If I were growing only one variety, that wouldn't be the case. I just wish I could grow everything, but don't have the space. I'm evolving a strategy where a new variety will make a guest appearance in the garden each year, while the EG & BB do their thing...

    No Brandywines? Some good ones on the table but not the best ones.... ;)
    One of the biggest flavors I've had this year was the Lemon Drops I grew for the first time, big taste in a little package!

    You guys sold me on the Japanese black trifele. We grew, Tiny Tim, Dwarf Roma,Beefsteak (Hybrid), Chocolate Cherry, Dagma's perfection, Husky Cherry Tomato (Hybrid). Tried Cherokee, failed. Never got to try the Dagma's grew tall and produced tons of flowers but not even one Tomato,lol We both loved the Beefsteak best. She likes the Husky second and I like the Chocolate Cherry second in line. We both thought like you, the Roma were bland yet, better than our least favorite Tiny Tim.

    Great video. I could never do a taste test like this for the simple fact that the closest I can get to eating raw tomato is maybe in a salsa or bruschetta lol All the tomatoes I grow pretty much end up as sauce or in curries.

    Come on!!!! Be adventurous!! Try the green varieties. The best tasting in my opinion is Emerald Evergreen. This year I am trying Aunt Ruby's German Green. I intend to run the gamut in future seasons should time last.

    thanks 4 the review. Japanese T is exactly what I searching4.
    every1 should have COYOTE tomato. strongest seed, earliest, latest produce, wild, and yes it grows wild.
    get GALAPOGOS TOMATO. might be only remaining indigenous original tomato left. has strong seedling phase.
    Principe Borges has exceptional seed strength. seeds are so important.
    goose creek was actually my best tomato ever in flavor.

    This would have been better and more informative if you were more organized in your tasting. A blind taste test is better with scoring.
