Holy cow look at you six and a half years ago! I hadnt went back this far in your videos before, so I was a little taken back when I saw teenage (just guessing) Luke pop into frame. Really shows your dedication to gardening/farming and to educating people for you to have been doing this since you were a kid...literally! My 2 sons are not quite interested in the green thumb experience, but my daughter loves it and hopefully will stick with it like you have. For my birthday, the boys got me video games, while she got me large tubs to plant in, new gardening tools, and tomato cages! Gotta love the passion! Oh...and great video lol!
I just saved the seeds from some brown cherry tomatoes and put them in strainer and rinsed them in water very well and then dried them with a paper towel and placed them on a plate for about a week and then planted them and they all sprouted nicely and are little 2 ' tall tomato plants already.
Great video! I will try this method for saving seeds. I have used paper towels in the past. I put the seeds with gel on a paper towel until it dries. The gel is absorbed into paper towel. I fold the paper towel and place it in an envelope labeled with the tomato type. In the spring, I tear off a small piece of paper towel, water and watch the tomatoes grow! LyNette R. In CO
DANG ! ZAP! POW ! I’m new here ! I’m loving all the things I’m learning from you ! Thank YOU !!! Ok, today I bought these really yummy brown tomatoes from Trader Joe’s. As I was cutting some up for a cucumber tomato salad, I thought to myself I’d like to saves some SEEDs to grow some this spring ! So hours later I turn to YOU and some other Organic Gardeners to learn from ! You are the first one I’ve turned to. And Man ! I looked at this Sweet Looking BOY /MAN person ! How fun ! You’ve been doing this ALONG Time ! I LOVE that your Father had that sigh made for You ! He knew and saw your potential!!! So Cool !!! Thank you so much ! Debra in Southern California!
oh my the hair.... and that baby face..... you are turning out to be a great young man with much knowledge keep growing, learning and sharing with us all.. we all, young or old beginner or seasoned just may learn something new.
WOW!! He was soooo young.....and what was up with that hair??? I cant believe it has been so long. You have come so far since these earlier videos. Great job!!!!!
I just put the seeds into a fine strainer and wash all of the gel off of them then dry them on newspaper. Been doing this for years and most of the seeds grow just fine.
Thanks for this tip. I dried mines a paper towel, gel and all, and the seed seems to be sprouting. I just put it in a cup and put it in between a damp paper towel in a sunny window.
Nice video man! I like the tomato stand. I could use a sign like that. Have you thought about selling at a local farmers market? The atmosphere is great and people love heirloom tomatoes. In Missouri, they sell for about $2.50-$4/lb depending on the market. There is also a great alternative to the USDA organic program for direct market farmers called "Certified Naturally Grown". CNG is much cheaper and less paper work. Oh, keep the tomatoes stem side down on your table. Great seed saving vid too
oh my goodness, you were just a baby in that video! lol :) I hope my kids will be this excited about gardening and seed saving one day. You're a great inspiration.
I am certainly NOT criticizing your method at all, but this is too much trouble...I take my heirloom ,my best ones and maybe a little over ripe, cut them open AVOID CUTTING THE SEEDS , and damp them on paper towels, sun dry ,until dry, usually a few hours ( make sure the seeds and paper towel are completely dry)...THEN role the paper towel up and store them in a sandmich bag and store in a drawer somewherez...Upon germinating, I simple tear the number of seeds you need off , dampin the seeds, role them off paper towel into seed starter immediately ..OR plant the paper with the seeds.. nearly a 100% rate..thanks for the info!
Did you put bags around the flowers you wanted to protect for saving seed? Or do you just roll the dice and hope your varieties don't mix and create a different variety?
You know I've heard of this but never tried it. Thanks for breaking it down :) I can see the the up side being the crap seeds float. Though I rarely have a germination problem w/ my tom seeds. I've always just gut the seeds then throw them in the strainer. Faucet on blast to remove the gelatin, dry them on the wax paper and done.
Good Job!!! My Wife & I like giving a bunch of veggies to our local food Bank also!!! Last year & had garbage bags of beets & a lady at the Food Bank said she would take some because they were going for around $1 per beet here in Canada last year .. Crazy Hey !!!! Well I brought a Garbage bag to the food bank, & The lady broke down in tears thanking us while the other workers complained that "They are too big" bla bla bla.. O well the big ones are good for preserving!!! Just cut them into quarters before boiling them a bit then you actually have less work because you need less beets for your jars or freezer bags!!! Plus I always buy a lighter beet so when they do get bigger, they do not really get woody tasting at all!!! Well Thanks 4 Sharing bud!!! DEv
I do not think you could have done a better job. Your fermentation method is just Fantastic. I think you method made my seeds very fertile. Thanks a million.
Great stuff, thank you! I wasn't sure how to save my tomato seeds for sure, I've got about 3 different varieties and wanted to make sure I saved them correctly.
I very much appreciate this vid, but I have to agree with the many here suggesting you use you absolute best tomatoes for seed and instead use the funny ones (to small, scarred, etc...) for sauce or something so you keep your genetics strong over the years/generations. Also just an fyi because the way you say it made me smile - 'Ananas Noir' is french for Black (noir) Pineapples (ananas).
haha, checkout the hair. This is great reference in 2019, as my mother accidentally stood on the "Tommy Toe" tomato harvest. Will be saving those for the next season for sure :)
Really enjoyed this video. I didn't go back in comments very far, so if this is a repeated question, I apologize. My question - I don't have any tomatos already homegrown; can I do this technique from tomatoes I get at the non-organic farmer's market? Or for that matter, from grocery store tomatoes?
Unfortunately I saw this process AFTER I had already saved lots of seeds on paper towels & they're dried. Seeds that I don't have more tomatoes to do it over the right way. What can I do with those seeds or will they grow next season? I had already done the paper towel method last year also. Yes, they are stuck in clumps but soak a clump after pulling it off the paper towel & they will separate. I know that hair style was popular that many years ago for your age group, but I don't miss it & I'm glad you're not still sporting it, Luke!
Is the fermentation process 100% necessary ? Is it okay to just plant the seeds (with removed pulp of course) straight into the ground? If so what would be the difference between the process and straight into the ground
+Roger Sprecco I think he addressed this - the gel coat is a sprouting inhibitor and needs to be fermented away. If you can grow immediately when the tomatoes are ripe you can simply slice the tomato horizontally into slices (like you would eat) and simply plant those whole slices in the ground. the 'pulp' is necessary to break down that coating on the seeds so they can sprout!
Actually the fermentation step is also to help prevent diseases that may have gotten in the tomato but is impossible to see. Also you want to choose at least one tomato from 3 of the same variety and mix the seeds so you can have some diversity. Every year choose the very best examples of your favorite varieties.
What do you put the seeds in after they come off the wax paper? I always used an envelope, but I've been told to put them in Ziploc bags and put them in the freezer.
This year I picked up a starter plant 'Jet Star' and loved it so much I'd like to save the seed to grow my own next year as this variety hardly ever comes to market where I live. However it is a F1 and Dr. Internet says will not grow true from saved seeds. Yet Jet Star seeds are available from several retailers. My brain can't wrap around how they manage to get seed from the fruit but I won't? I know you are busy with the new house but I'll save the seeds from the last beautiful Jet Star tomato harvested just in case you find time to answer.
Instead of getting seeds from the f1, they repeat the process of hybridization, from the parent varieties, to get the f1. That's the only way f1 seeds are made.
Great How to Vid! Question: Since you plant all your heirlooms in one garden, won't they cross pollinate leaving seeds of possibly questionable origin?
My oops! I try to catch all your vids..must have missed it...sorry! I really enjoyed your tomato tasting video! It was great to see the inside of sooo many varieties all at the same time. Thanks so much for showing your gardens :))
That's a lot of steps for some tomatos seeds. What I did was spoon out the seeds front the tomato into a paper towel then let it dry in to chip like flakes and that's it.
I'm thinking that either way works, if the seeds aren't ripening on the vine, it uses the water and nutrients from the fruit to mature the seeds. After all, the plant's objective is to make seeds and this process happens naturally
I'm wondering... is there any reason in particular that I shouldn't use a tomato that has started to mold to save seeds? We had so much rain this year when it should have been hot that most of my tomatoes split, and some started molding, before I could even pick them. I got rid of them, but it only took a couple of days for the good ones to start to mold, I guess because of the moisture. Just trying to figure out if I can save from my harvest, or if I should buy again next year.
I've grown seeds successfully the following year after having mouldy tomatos, without problem. we also had a huge rain fall and ruined the tomatos, so i picked most of them to save them and they all grew ;) (I grow black tomatos so for me losing my generation would be a disaster.
tomato seeds do not need t be put in the fridge. That is for seeds that need to be stratified. Most vegetable seeds this does not need to be done. Thanks for watching!
Awesome! Thanks, I will try that this year! BTW great how to vid. I have never tried to save my heirloom seeds but after watching your vid I am going to try this year.
You could be making more than just tomatoes.. At 10:12 the supposed mold appears to be a premature Scoby. Scoby is a colony of yeast used in the making of kombucha. Kombucha is a drink that is very good, I drink buddhas brew kombucha and it makes me feel great. you should think about trying to make some. Look up how to make a scoby and you will see what I mean.
Thank you. How long do you usually ferment it? I kinda smush my tomato into a paper towel - and call it seed saving. Yours is neater...but i dont want to destroy seeds by oversoaking
Boy, I bet you really cringe when you look at these old videos!! hahaha That said, it's so awesome to see your passion go this far back (and I'm sure farther). Thanks so much for making such great, informative and helpful videos and putting them out into the world!
I remember a method my relatives used to use for saving tomato seeds. They would just cut a tomato in half or in quarters and leave those pieces to dry in the sun. Is this still a decent method for saving the seeds?
Ya that's effective. A lot of people will put them in a jar for a week with a little water and let it sit. Fermenting it so that the gelatinous material surrounding the seeds will disintegrate.
I cut mine in half, the way you said not to. Then i squeeze them and all the seeds come out and it takes like 3 seconds. Then I have all the meat to use.
Luv this vid i just ate my first spears tennessee grn mater today it was awesome saved seeds to use nxt yr try them their is only 1 utube about them thats how i knew it was ready weighed about a lb
Ok, after watching all the 2019 and 2020 videos I WAS NOT PREPARED to see this haircut on our favorite internet gardener! Great video.
Or the video intro, reminds me of WordArt 😂
😭😂
Such a young pup! I thought I had logged onto the wrong channel.
😂😂😂
I WASNT READY FOR THE OPENING GRAPHIC
The amount of time this man has putting in to share knowledge is astounding.
Holy cow look at you six and a half years ago! I hadnt went back this far in your videos before, so I was a little taken back when I saw teenage (just guessing) Luke pop into frame. This video is such a gift. We learn something and get to see young Luke! You have come so far, and it’s fun to look back at your beginnings. ❤
I just saved the seeds from some brown cherry tomatoes and put them in strainer and rinsed them in water very well and then dried them with a paper towel and placed them on a plate for about a week and then planted them and they all sprouted nicely and are little 2 ' tall tomato plants already.
It would be awesome to do a follow up to this video now that you had the seed store! I'm sure you have further refined your strategies
How adorble is this!?!?!?!?! A 10 year old video from our guy! in the garden
Holy smoke!! I didn't know your channel's been around this long!
I’m watching your seed saving going alll the way back 😂🍅❤️
Oh my gosh, this is too cute and Vintage MI Gardener video. ❤💕🐝
I know!
Back in 2019 for a refresher for saving seed this year!
Great video! I will try this method for saving seeds. I have used paper towels in the past. I put the seeds with gel on a paper towel until it dries. The gel is absorbed into paper towel. It's the intro music for me🥰 We've come a long way I see
Luke, do ever get a little nostalgic and go back and watch your older videos and reflect? At any rate, this was a really fun video. 😊
Retro MIgardener... I like it. I'm going to give this a shot, thanks!
oh my the hair.... and that baby face..... you are turning out to be a great young man with much

WOW!! He was soooo young.....and what was up with that hair??? I cant believe it has been so long. You have come so far since these earlier videos. Great job!!!!!
Thank you for sharing this video -- many people have no clue of how easy it is to save some seed.
I just put the seeds into a fine strainer and wash all of the gel off of them then dry them on newspaper. Been doing this for years and most of the seeds grow just fine.
frank grimes I do the same for years or I just put in the ground open a hole and dump them in
Thanks for this tip. I dried mines a paper towel, gel and all, and the seed seems to be sprouting. I just put it in a cup and put it in between a damp paper towel in a sunny window.
Much easier than his way. Also alot less "wordy" than his long winded video!

Does this work, or do you need to rehydrate them before planting?

The sign your dad made for you is awesome! This was a really nice, helpful video. Thank you!

Oldie but a goodie! Good information on saving seeds.
How long can you store them after? Like how do you store tomatoes at the end of the season? How do you prepare them to store.
I do not think you could have done a better job. Your fermentation method is just Fantastic. I think you method made my seeds very fertile. Thanks a million.
I noticed you grow a lot of different varieties of tomatoes. How do you isolate them so you don't risk cross pollination between the varieties?
Tomatoes self pollinate. So there isn't an issue of cross pollination like there is with other plants. xD
Sorry for the response 7 years late, hah.
Great stuff, thank you! I wasn't sure how to save my tomato seeds for sure, I've got about 3 different varieties and wanted to make sure I saved them correctly.
When you’re doing bulk seed saving, do you just let the pulp ferment as well? How have you adjusted this process for the tomatoes in your seed store?
I very much appreciate this vid, but I have to agree with the many here suggesting you use you absolute best tomatoes for seed and instead use the funny ones (to small, scarred, etc...) for sauce or something so you keep your genetics strong over the years/generations.

Hey thanks for sharing, didn't know it took so much to save tomato seeds I am going to give that one a try after this years growing. Awesome!
Man I love the sign, oh and the tomatoes too :) So many different varieties ;)
2021… wow…talk about throwback! 😂
Where do store while fermenting ? Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks for the video! Do you know if the healthy mold at the top, can it be added to soil for nutrients?
Unfortunately I saw this process AFTER I had already saved lots of seeds on paper towels & they're dried. Seeds that I don't have more tomatoes to do it over the right way. Wow you’ve been at this for a really long time! Thank you for the videos
Well done sir. Thank you. Planning to do this soon.
Great How to Vid! Question: Since you plant all your heirlooms in one garden, won't they cross pollinate leaving seeds of possibly questionable origin?
Tomatoes self pollinate, within a single flower, unlike many other veggies, no separation is required.
Where do you store the plastic bags of seeds? Do they stay out?
Why do you cover them? How long do you leave them to ferment? Is it ok to leave them outside if it's in the high 90's?
Came up in my suggestions. Wow. Young Luke. Awesome video.
Informative video, thank you! Can you use place the mold in your compost pile/bin? Or in some way use it as part of an organic fertilizer?
pam, the mold can be thrown into the garden for sure. It is just an organic product so it will break down and feed your plants for sure.
Got it, thank you! :)
How long do you suggest germinating? Is a few days sufficient?
Love it Luke! You’re great at this!!! All the way from Nova Scotia
So once I have the seeds cleaned and dried and stored....do I plant the seeds outside in the spring?
My oops! I try to catch all your vids..must have missed it...sorry! I really enjoyed your tomato tasting video! It was great to see the inside of sooo many varieties all at the same time. Thanks so much for showing your gardens :))
😀 the hair, like all the kids that age! Really good info Luke, thanks!
Thanks! I appreciate the reply. Anyt adivce on bagging the tomato?
good tip about the floating seeds and doing it twice to be extra sure they are sunk and viable for next planting.
That's a lot of steps for some tomatos seeds. What I did was spoon out the seeds front the tomato into a paper towel then let it dry in to chip like flakes and that's it.
Does it need to FULLY ripen on the vine or can it be picked when just a little red and finish ripening inside?
I'm thinking that either way works, if the seeds aren't ripening on the vine, it uses the water and nutrients from the fruit to mature the seeds. After all, the plant's objective is to make seeds and this process happens naturally
Why is the mold beneficial? Do you have to have that done, to get growth later?
+Applepiebetty not necessary. Putting the seeds in the sun has the same effect.
I'm wondering... is there any reason in particular that I shouldn't use a tomato that has started to mold to save seeds? We had so much rain this year when it should have been hot that most of my tomatoes split, and some started molding, before I could even pick them. Do you recommend putting them in the fridge for a month before planting? I've heard of folks doing
that.
tomato seeds do not need t be put in the fridge. That is for seeds that need to be stratified. Most vegetable seeds this does not need to be done. Thanks for watching!
Nice vid, fellow gardener and seed saver.
Thanks for this informative video! I love your channel!
So glad it helped Ruth! It is a bit old, but still very good information none the less.
Awesome! Thanks, I will try that this year! BTW great how to vid. I have never tried to save my heirloom seeds but after watching your vid I am going to try this year.
so I tried this method and wound up with half a cup full of germinating tomato seeds?
Omg, you’re just a baby here!! Love this channel so much :)
Yah...I used a coasted paper plate last week...and it stuck and I ended up throwing it away. Will try wax paper this week :)
You could be making more than just tomatoes.. At 10:12 the supposed mold appears to be a premature Scoby. Scoby is a colony of yeast used in the making of kombucha. Thanks for sharing. I learned a lot
What kind are the tomatoes in the quart containers? There are a lot of them whatever they are.
Thank you. How long do you usually ferment it? I kinda smush my tomato into a paper towel - and call it seed saving. Yours is neater...but i dont want to destroy seeds by oversoaking
I think that's what happened to mine after trying this process this year. Perhaps I left them too long
I’ve heard it is best to soak for at least 3 weeks to a month
Thank you so much for putting this video together and sharing it great work, kind regards Roy
If you bag the flowers that means that you are self pollinating correct? I'm really not sure how that procedure works.
You should do an updated tour of your garden & another vid like this.
Boy, I bet you really cringe when you look at these old videos!! hahaha
That said, it's so awesome to see your passion go this far back (and I'm sure farther). Thanks so much for making such great, informative and helpful videos and putting them out into the world!
Great video, very helpful.. thanks so much
thanks for watching! glad it was helpful!
Luke, is that you?? Lol great video as always🤙
I have planted tomato slices from the grocery store and they grew. So why do you ferment them?
I remember a method my relatives used to use for saving tomato seeds. They would just cut a tomato in half or in quarters and leave those pieces to dry in the sun. Is this still a decent method for saving the seeds?
Ya that's effective. A lot of people will put them in a jar for a week with a little water and let it sit. Fermenting it so that the gelatinous material surrounding the seeds will disintegrate.
It's not necessary to lose the tomato in the process.. scrape the seeds out and eat the tomato instead!
Can you use a dehydrator with "no heat" to dry seeds?
Ted Papesh not the best, just use this method and they will turn out AWESOME.
So how much money did you make and what price were you selling the cracked ones for?
apesar de não entender nada do que voce diz gosto muito dos seus videos, suas plantas são lindas
I just rub the anti sprout off and they did great.
Revisiting this video 2020, my god you're a baby!
Wow were u in high school when this was filmed?
Uploading it now. Is there a certain video I should upload the reply to? I know you said youtube won't let me do the same video for my second entry.
Very interesting. Thank you! I hope you have a nice week.
can you plant these seeds right away?
I cut mine in half, the way you said not to. Then i squeeze them and all the seeds come out and it takes like 3 seconds. Then I have all the meat to use.
I don't see the need to apologize for making a profit. Do you apologize for getting paid for work?
David Raley you l .
I've been wondering about this, really I wish other men would appreciate the work besides feeling they are discharged of my gifts to them by money.
Luv this vid i just ate my first spears tennessee grn mater today it was awesome saved seeds to use nxt yr try them their is only 1 utube about them thats how i knew it was ready weighed about a lb
