Dr. John Damicone, Professor of Plant Pathology, joins host Kim Toscano to highlight some of the diseases homeowners are experiencing in their tomatoes. #4103 Airdate: 7/19/2014
Anthony Poole had some major hail earlier this month. Then it got really cold, and stayed cold for at least 3-4 days. All of course after I transplanted my seedlings for the season..
Very good info, one of the best videos I have saw on tomato diseases. Mr. Damicone is very well versed and does an excellent job of explaining these problems. Kim is an excellent host, thank you for sharing this video.
Copper spray helps a lot. I've tried it, and my friends did as well. However, dont wait until the disease occurs. Spray when seedlings are around 6 inches tall (before planting), then a couple of times every 2-3 weeks (not earlier, as it will damage the plant). IT'S IMPORTANT YOU SPRAY EITHER EARLY MORNING OR LATE EVENING, SO IT DOESNT KILL THE BEES (if the spray it wet on the plant, the bees will carry it to their hive and kill other bees or the queen, which eventually weakens the colony, and if no queen, kills the hive). Ideally, its also good that it rains 3 days after the spray. The fruits can be eaten a few days after the spray.
Thanks. I see this is 5 years old but its still helping newbie gardeners. I know that the 2 plants with leaf roll are experiencing Physiological leaf roll And this really messed up 1 has beet curly top virus. QUESTION Should I also toss the soil. It is in a 5 Gallon food grade "Wicking bucket" . Is there any possibility that it can get into the soil ??
The healthiest tomatoes seem to be the volunteers coming right out of my compost pile. I have 3 or 4 that have sprung up on the perimeter of my compost heap. Go figure. They receive no care from me, watering, nothing and they're as strong and happy as can be.
Rotate through three different anti-fungal spray mixed with bt powder. Spray every week or after a rain then restart. Start spraying when planted.use malathion as per lable when fruit sets. Or grind hot peppers and spray every week for leaf hoppers and stink bugs. Chlorothalonil (doconil) or sulphur (until 80) copper mancozeb mix before fruit ripens, quadris top early on for anthracnose. If you live in the south you have to spray. If organic spray more often.
Are the fruits still ok to eat? I have no idea what's going on with my plant. It's fruiting and some are now ripening but then the leaf roll started and now the leaves are all turning yellow. It's in a pot.
My problem is my tomatoe plants are turning to mush at the base. The plant looks healthy have lots of tomatoes on them the stem starts to turn brown at the base and its mushy like something was inside. We have taken the stem apart looking g for a worm and nothing. What could it be? Please help!
Thanks for watching +Josephine Rock! Rarely do the pathogens that infect plants have the same effect on humans. They are safe to eat, however they may not be desirable. Avoid eating moldy or rotten produce though! Great question, and happy gardening!
6:25 in the video, I can tell that you will be sick because in the top right corner there is a lizard most probably what the guy hired to look after the tomatoes and they could easily infect the tomatoes.
My tomato trees some of the leaves are getting white. Those yellow and turning dry I cut it off. What is the best thing to do to keep my tomatoes healthy? I put water twice a day because summer here.
Hi there I have been searching the cause of my problem.... Ireland based, stared 2 varieties from seed (scatolone and oxheart) I transplanted seedling once, all good. I transplanted them again in single pots over a week ago. The soil is not soaked just humid. Watered from the bottom, they are in the house on the window...they started get their leaves wilted and then dry. I am removing those leaves...the situation is not getting better and the leaves left curl up towards the bottom. The stem is nice and strong and green. No sings of rotting... the roots are not as developed as I'd like them to be... and out of 8 plants all of them are losing lots of foliage with 3 that have barely any left on (in middle small new foliage) ....what can I do...please help...
I mail-ordered purple (black) tomato seeds. Most of the full grown plants now have what looks like curly top. I have a mix or cherry and large purple tomato plants. They are making only a few tomatoes so far. I'm very sad and disappointed to see them afflicted.
Curiously it looks like the plants have recovered. I also read it may be too much nitrogen that caused the curly/gnarled growth. That has resolved itself.
Love the info you both gave. We planted our tomatoes, then we got 5 inches of rain everyday for a week, then more the week after. The plants looked good then they got dead brown leaves. I heard that you can put down a fungicide in the soil before planting. Will that help? Also, I am going to solarize. Do you think that will help. I am so tired of putting money into the garden and have the plants wither and die, but the tops keep growing and looking good for a while till they all wither and turn brown. Another problem is the leaf-footed bug. I spray them with soapy water and pick them off and drown them in a cup of soapy water. Is there any way to get rid of them? Thanks for any help.
It's a worm! Saw one on my tomato plants! So whats next for a fall garden, in southwestern louisiana! So i should just scrap or compost my tomato plants?Because I have everything that you are saying is going on except the curling with purple veins! My tomato leaves are curling! But no fruit and at least 5 to 6 large plants , without fruits and maybe a flower or two! What can I do?
I have a good crop of tomatoes but noticed that some tomatoes have small soft areas on the bottom. I never had this in years in New York now I am gardening in Nevada and last year had two seasons in the Las Vegas area. I would like to know to treat this disease.
We are so sorry to hear that! Here is a quick fact sheet that discusses tomato diseases and their treatments! pods.dasnr.okstate.edu/docushare/dsweb/Get/Document-1323/EPP-7625web.pdf
3 things. Remineralize the soil. Azomite is cheap and affective. Compost. Get your microorganism population up and happy. This is easily done with the compost and a nice mulch layer. Mulch is key to making the microorganisms happy. A soft bottomed tomato is just days away from being a black bottomed tomato. Either you dont have enough calcium or it's not available. If your ph is inbetween 6.4 and 6.8 your perfect. Outside of that range and your going to give the plants problems being able to uptake the calcium. This happens often Nutrient absorption is directly related to your ph. Google nutrient ph absorption chart and you will see the list of macro and micro butrients and the range in which they can be absorbed. Very interesting stuff. To test your soil ph, you must do whats called a slurry test. You can google that as well. Oregons constant gardener has a youtube channel thats helpful with this but there are many videos that can assist you. Good luck
If it is a brown spot sound like blossom end rot and can be remedied by putting a little gypsum around the plant. It will not affect those that already have it but will protect the next generation. Gypsum is CaSo4 or Calcium sulfate and it is the calcium that fixes the problem.

Note to Dr John D. thanks GREAT and helpful insights ! that leaf curl had me stumped ,just wont plant Abraham Lincoln tomatoes here any more ! pure curl ,,huge plant 1 tasty tomato! (California) bye the way I managed to eliminate fusarian wilt from my soil using WORM TEA made from my home made worm compost .Mychorisal compost minerals, and some fert and food and kelp .. using same soil I had extensive fungal damage ,now I never see it anymore. also worm compost in soil mix bout 20% or less, and ALL my compost is aged at least a year.
i've been plucking the leave off bottom up to 4th roll to the top or 4 rolls down leaving them. THERE DOING EXCELLENT i also been leaving suckers, on em, if they bloom They don't bloom? i snap em off These are ROMA tomato's> been black lighting them at night time > to fine worm ect they glow green or yellow
ha, just did the research... "pimp", or Solanum pimpinellifolium, is the wild ancestor of all modern tomato plants; still found in Peru and Southern Ecuador. Although it has tiny, pea-sized fruits, it can thrive and produce in many various environments and can thwart-off many diseases. It seems that today's tomatoes are weak and sensitive...
+LARRY'S BRAIN I found one in the mountains behind my house, planted and watered it, it grew fantastic, no disease at all. They now grow wild around my property, to small but tasty. The wild natural tomatoes are very good.
I've got more of an issues with wind damage in my whole garden from two different storms. Made a mess of my garden second year in a row
Anthony Poole had some major hail earlier this month. Then it got really cold, and stayed cold for at least 3-4 days. All of course after I transplanted my seedlings for the season..

By plating tomato’s for so long like my self make you learn a lot because over the years you will see enough to understand how to grow them

I found Copper Fungicide at full strenght burned a lot of my tomato plant leave, but it does work. I will try 1/2 strength next time I spray.
You need to talk about exact sprays to put on your tomato plants and leaves
I have 8 plants in a row. 4 are doing great! 4 I think have fursarium wilt! Should i pull them? Need help! Would they kill the healthy plants?
The actual cause of the damage is from a mite that's called russet mites.
I love growing *_everything!_*

My roma tomatoes are doing great...however my beef steak all got diseases.
Look at the disease resistance of the plant. The label will tell what it has. VFN are some things to look for.

it would be interesting to see a truly "wild" tomato plant in nature; it's level of productivity and it's ability to withstand disease ???
ha, just did the research...
Thanks for sharing that information! Happy Gardening!
grate info man thanks!
+LARRY'S BRAIN I found one in the mountains behind my house, planted and watered it, it grew fantastic, no disease at all. They now grow wild around my property, to small but tasty. The wild natural tomatoes are very good.
Not alot of definitive information from you brother...
GOOD VIDEO,GOOD JOB!!!
