Interesting! I have used Musescore extensively and my decision was to go back to Musescore 3 using Spitfire for the sound engine. Musescore 4 does a pitiful job handling dynamics, The Muse Sounds only work with Musescore 4 so if you want to use a daw to cleanup or make any adjustments to the score, you are out of luck. Musescore 4 does not have the ability to route the audio to other applications, something that is easy in Musescore 3. Musescore 4 does a better job of formatting print than Musescore 3, but everything else is a downgrade compared to Musescore 3. If you have never used a professional grade of music software, then Musescore 4 is a cheap way to get your feet wet. Otherwise, there are better choices available.

Problem with Musescore4 is that it is a kind of preview. They still have a lot of wok to do before it can become what it should be (and time is here expressed in number of half-years, I'm afraid). They have many bugs to correct. They have many features to redo which are missing from Musescore 3. Dynamics currently do not work as it should because they only started to change the way dynamics work but they did not finished it. And we hope that they will also find the strength to implement completely new features (including some that we wait for long time). Fast forward a few years and we will see :)

The upgrade in term of UI was HUGE between 3 and 4. It's clear that it was the main focus of the update.
If they keep working on developing it at that pace, future versions of musescore are going to be absolutely great.

Musescore 4 and 3 are open source programs continuously updated and developed, so it'll take time to see if the problem you found would be resolved in future updates for musescore 4 or would become Musescore 5 thing.

I still think in relationship to the notation heard here , Sibelius seems like a really good option. What is important to me is the range of articulations available in my platte and how I can can shape these articulations . My preference is the Spitfire option …it exhibits really nice close miking ..and an avalanche of articulations. I know people have so many different budgets and fortunately for composers ,of any means , it is true the availability of tools in this category has become really democratised ..such a good thing ..so all the candidates are winners ..it depends on your pockets and ears. Having said all that for the initial stages of composition I use Notion (IOS) which sound wise is on a par with Sibelius’s sonically to my ears and the notation view and export options are excellent. It is a wonderful period in time for budding composers , many of whom have restricted finances, there are so many free good quality resources out there ..we should thank our lucky stars ✨✨🙏🏿🎩👍

I have recently just abandoned my use of Sibelius for Muse score 4. There are draw backs to the switch, yet it yields pros as well. First, Sibelius's play back will work for any standard ensemble size. Muse score has problems with play back once the ensemble reaches even a Romantic sized orchestra. Sibelius has more options for articulations and retrogrades..ect. Muse has some, however they are limiting. Overall, I am very pleased with how easy and well rounded Musescore is, you can't too wrong with free on this one.

This test is heavily biased in favor of Spitfire and against NP3 and MS4 just by virtue of the differing volumes you presented them at. Human perception has an inherent bias towards louder=better. Punch NP3 out with some strong treble and bass+low mid boost and you'll find out that it too can rock...

Is the gain in NotePerformer so choked down? It is hard to compare one soundfont with another when the disparity in playback volume is so great. I use Garritan's library that has some nice sounds, but it too is choked. Engineers seem to have an aversion to the input of musicians.

  • @OGrauMusic

The comparison is not fair. 3 score edits against a DAW? it's absurd because with a DAW the sound design options are endless. My favorite here is Muse 4 (it's free) and Noteperformer very easy to use (write everything on the staff and it will play just fine, the smart algorithm takes care of all the hard work of sound editing and articulations, the wish of most composers) they have to update the strings (they sound weird) NotePerformer 4 will win...

    • @javiermedina5313

definitely the strings is the worst part of NP. I really hope they change that, also it has a cut off in the lowest frequencies, that's not very good.

No worries! To get a better sound at this point you need a live orchestra or start diving into the world of music production using a digital audio workspace like Logic Pro X, it can be a big learning curb but there are lots of tutorials on how to use Logic (or digital audio workspace DAW Of choice) and sample libraries on TH-cam. I would always use the free stuff first before paying for any sample libraries as they can be quite an investment. I have done some videos on writing music in Logic, but what you can do is transfer your score from Sibelius into logic and then add the good sounds but again that’s a big learning curb and a lot of work. I do do private online lessons in music production and using Logic Pro x

I've been with MuseScore sense MuseScore 2. The Sibelius 7 sample sounded slightly better than Muse 2. In that sample, NotePerformer was comparable to Muse 3. Between Muse 4 and Spitfire in this given sample, the strings sounded better in Muse, but the brass sounded better in Spit. However, Muse is capable of better brass. The odd thing about Muse 4 is that it is inconsistent. The brass can sometimes sound incredible in ff, but is normally lacking in anything less than f. And there isn't enough flexibility with sfz or fp

The articulations on Spitfire audio are so wrong...I can't handle it. Also you have differences in levels, reverbs and compression. I think that makes a lot for the general perception of any sound library. I think that with a little of your time working on the mix, noteperformer can really achieve incredible results.

  • @NidusFormicarum

Muse Sounds are completely unusable, since you can't balance the score properly. Am I missing something? There are SOOO many issues with it so I don't even know where to start ... I prefer to have worse basic sounds, but a well-balanced score with good sounding articulations and dynamics every day of the week. But then again, some instruments like the euphonium, for instance, I haven't even manage to find a sound fint for.

It seems that only you re the only one to have this issue, but you can always tweak things up if it doesn't work the way you wanted it to. Yes, not all instruments have a musesound, since it's a lot of work and musesound was rushed for its release, but more and more instrument have been added, last time, some months ago, we ve got musesound for guitars, and it's wonderful.

Without wishing to offend, your piece really doesn't have the orchestral or arranging skills or content to test any of the examples. There is no proper independence of parts and the piece comprises basic piano semiquaver patterns with woodwind following the highest notes in the piano sequence. There is no attention to texture and scant evidence of much arranging skill going on. Under these conditions it is hard to judge the quality of the sample comparisons. Sorry.
