In case your MDL files were downloaded differently, I added a copy of the sfz folder in the .drm file pack. Hope that helps anyone who cannot locate them!
Thank you so much for making this video! I just got Musescore 4 and was very disappointed that the MDL plugin wasn't supported, then I found this video. I followed you along step by step on a Mac and I was very surprised that everything worked perfectly (because usually computer tutorials on windows don't work on MacOS).
Thank you for making this video. I’m currently writing a fanfare for the Low Brass and needed some better snare sounds, like rim shots, for their little fill. So helpful!
Ive looked through the new MS Basic soundfont (which for the most part is just the MS3 HQ soundfont), and the interesting thing is that it actually contains the sounds for Musescore Drumline.
You mentioned in the video about not knowing how to change where Musescore 4 looks; I'm on the mac but it looks like if you open up system preferences/settings for Musescore 4 and then go to Folders you can change it.
I loaded the sounds in, and when I pressed on the different keys in sforzando, it sounds like if you slapped one of those echoey child microphones. How do I get it to sound normal?
This worked perfectly, but every time I close out of Musescore none of the sounds work. I can fix it by manually re-importing each instrument one-by-one in sfz, but is there a better workaround to keep the sounds running in sfz?
You should be able to just click "Ignore" when that pops up and it will still work as intended. Let me know if that fixes those issues for you! If not I can work on getting those updated.
Are you getting any sound without using the .drm files? So like when you load up Musescore, load up sforzando in the editor, and place a few random notes (without switching drumsets), you're not getting anything? You may not have sforzando setup correctly, refer to 4:44 for that. but if you think that's all good, then that's really strange. No other popups occur, like "assets not found?" Let me know and I'll see if I can help you out
When i try using it, i can use it with other soundfonts i downloaded. the only issue is with the MDL soundfonts. It says there's not assets found for any instrument. it loads the tenors, but the keyboard is completely blacked out.
nothing in sforzando is making any sound. ive configured my preferances to DirectSound with my headphones and nothing is working with any of the sfz files. please help
You're welcome! Can you be more specific with the triplet buzz roll? Are you using standard snare "hits" and trying to add the buzz tremolo to them? Or are you using the "buzz" notes? Unfortunately with Musescore 4, the buzz tremolo no longer works, so you'll have to insert those notes manually.
Hi! Is there a way to edit the bass drum sounds? Tenors and snare are fine, but the bass drums for 3 4 and 5 are all defaulting to clicks, and the unison bass drum is also a click.
No, but in the meantime you can use the "General MIDI" drumset in VDL. It uses the same mappings as Musescore's drumset I believe and sounds a whole lot better.
When I tried to import the snare drum sounds into sforzando, it said there was an error, and that the assets were not found. Is there any way that this could be fixed? Thank you so much for the video too
Sorry - nearly a full year late. Let me know if this fixes the issue for you. Everything in the "sfz" folder needs to be in the same location. If your "MDL_instrument.sfz" files aren't in the same location as the folder titled "MDL_samples", the code will not be able to locate any sounds (hence the "no sound asset" error). In my video, I like to keep the "sfz" folder in the Musescore4 folder in My Documents, just to keep everything together. Hopefully this helps!
a year late, but i thought i'd just add that, at least for me, there was a distinction between the musescore folders created in Documents vs. Program Files if that helps anyone
This is honestly an incredibly disappointing oversight for musescore 4. This video shouldn't need to exist. I was so excited for musescore 4, and as soon as i opened it i was dashed
Yeah, but on the bright side, they are adding new drumline samples in an update coming soon from what I hear! It will be a major overhaul to other percussion instruments as well, similar to Virtual Drumline.
Nope. Musescore 4 gave us the ability to add VST Plugins to our scores. This uses one of those plugins, so older versions unfortunately cannot do this.
Nice video. But unfortunately I had a problem trying to load the drumsets. The program (musescore) is telling me that the drumset archive is to old so the program may not be able to load it ... I need some help...😢
Hi, I tried, but when I ran the musescore and replaced it with sforzando it didn't make a sound, but if I opened it right away without using the musescore it made a sound.
Sorry for no response! Seems like a goofy bug within Musescore that's doing this. There's a few things you can try. A) Place a few random notes on your score before you change the Drumset file or change anything in the mixer. B) When you switch the mixer over to sforzando, place a few random notes before you change the drumset file and see if you get any sound. C) If neither works, remove the instrument and try again. No idea what's going on between Musescore and sforzando but this problem never happened before. If none of that works, just add a Piano to your score, switch the soundfont in the mixer to sforzando, and see if you get any sound just by adding a few notes. Hopefully you won't have to deal with that though.
I have like everything downloaded and i got to edit the drumset to and i put all the snaredrum line sfz on all the instruments but it keeps saying no sound asset located and idk what to do
Switch it back to musescore default soundfont, place a note down, and then switch it back to the MDL soundfont, and that should work after a few attempts
Sorry - over half a year late but hopefully this fixes the issue. Everything in the "sfz" folder needs to be in the same location. If your "MDL_instrument.sfz" files aren't in the same location as the folder titled "MDL_samples", the code will not be able to locate any sounds (hence the "no sound asset" error). If you're working in a DAW, this method should work. Load the SFZ plugin on an instrument track, open the .sfz file for the corresponding instrument, and use the piano roll to put the notes on the track. If you already know the tempo and feel more confident writing the parts within Musescore, you can export as a wav or mp3 (File -> Export). Then, just go over to your DAW, import that file, and line them up.
I've been searching to make a template for "scottish" snare drum notation. Right hand above/Left hand below line. I can't figure out how to do it. Would it be possible to do in an easy way?
In theory you could check the option to force specific notes to a barline. Just write everything with typical snare drum notation and then move the R's up or L's down to another line when you're done
hey dude, i downloaded all the files recently and for tenors, no spocks or skanks work. when i open the file is sfz, i doesnt show the audio files for those, whats up with that?
@@ryansmallwood3601 Hey Ryan, I'm really sorry I didn't get back to you! Let me know if you're still having this issue. I may have a crude way to get it fixed.
@@ryansmallwood3601 Check that those sounds are still in your MDL_samples folder (this should be in the same location as your .sfz files). Go into the "tenor" folder and look for any files that start with "sp1", "sp2", or "4_skank". If there's no files that start with those, ignore the next part and go to the next paragraph. If there are files there, double click on them to see if they make any sound. You should be able to open them by using the Media Player on Windows. If there's an error or they don't play anything, then you'll have to do the following: It might seem crude, but just remove the "tenor" folder entirely and replace it by downloading a new "tenor" folder using the link in the description. See if that fixes things. If those files ARE there and the DO play audio, then that's an entirely different problem. You might want to delete the "MDL_Tenorline.sfz" and "MDL_Tenors.sfz" files and download new ones and see if that works?
How do you adjust the timing with flams playback? When I notate flams and play them back, they're very open and concert sounding. I want them to be tighter for marching music.
Unfortunately I don't think that's possible right now in MS. Make sure you use the grace notes that have a slash in em. Still, flam playback is SIGNIFICANTLY better than Sibelius and Finale tbh
Hm, that might have something to do with sfozando or musescore not being able to process the samples fast enough. Maybe try increasing your buffer size if you havent already? In musescore go to Edit>Preferences>I/O>Buffer Size. After talking to a member of the musescore team, it seems likely that the sfz player can have those sorts of troubles. If there is no playback AT ALL, not even the basic triplets, then it could have something to do with the way that MDL processes tremelos. In Musescore 3, when specific notes are given specific articulations/tremelos, it plays a different sound. The most common case would be putting a buzz tremelo on a standard snare hit to get a buzz roll sound. unfortunately, i do not think there is a workaround for that at the moment, but if I can replicate the problem on my computer I can maybe provide a workaround.
Upon further investigation, it seems that this is a broader Musescore 4 problem, as triplet rolls do not play back properly even on a MS Basic concert snare drum. I guess the only workaround at the moment would be to instead write the triplet rolls out as sextuplets and write the sticking as RR LL RR.
In case your MDL files were downloaded differently, I added a copy of the sfz folder in the .drm file pack. Hope that helps anyone who cannot locate them!

I changed the sound font on preferences from Direct Sound to MME and that helped the Audio A TON

would assume it's an issue with the kit, try making random new notes in the kit with random midi inputs till you find them
