Agreed. Marcy Levy. She takes this song from a 9.5 to a 10. Talented songwriter, too. Co-wrote, "Lay Down Sally". Great pick, Brandon!

This is EC of the mid 70's Slowhand, No reason to Cry, Backless and 461 Ocean Blvd. era. He always had great backup singers, Marcy Levy on this, Yvonne Elliman on others.

Love the background image for these lyrics. A cold, lonely bridge leading into the darkness - perfect match. Mr. Eric Clapton constantly impresses with his evolving versatility. You've probably already reacted to my 2 fave Clapton songs, "Layla", in his Derek & the Dominos incarnation, & "Cocaine", live version. But just in case you haven't, sir, I'll put in my request. Thanks for this stroll along ol' Slow Hand's lonely bridge, sir!

Thank you for a lovely reaction to a great song. Promises is one of my favourite Clapton songs, because it's the very opposite of what makes some of his others so great. In contrast with Layla, which is epic, Promises is very understated, which might be why many people don't know it.

If you want to hear the blues influence on Clapton listen to his "Unplugged" album from 1992. The entire album is straight old school blues cuts, except for "Tears in Heaven" which is a soul wrenching song concerning his own personal tragedy.

This was recorded during Clapton's 'J.J. Cale' period, early to late '70s and my favourite period of his. He did away with long solos, and largely went acoustic and showed that he had a quiet, soulful voice. Other gems from that period are, Lay Down Sally, Better Make It Through Today, Pretty Blue Eyes,, Let It Grow, Please Be With Me.

No - EC never does the same song twice, a tribute to his diversity and unending creativity. Yes, his voice does sound more country. It fits the song perfect. The more you listen to him - the more you’ll be able to spot his voice - rock, country, blues. He also did different things throughout the decades. Personally, I think his voice just gets better with time. Yes, I can tell it’s him.

I shouldn't like this song - but I really really do. The ingredients are not promising, about helf the lyrics are "la la la" and it's the kind of thing that George Hamilton IV might have done - and yet somehow it draws me in every time. Something sonicly magical about the unison guitar, female and male vocal. He works the same trick on his duet with J.J. Cale "Ride the River".
