You could call this the redundant circuit. You added a diode to a full bridge rectifier that is composed of 4 discrete diodes. You did all that just to use it with a DC power source. All that just to reduce 5 volts down to 1.5 volts. It's not particularly useful. A battery on a quarts wall clock will last a year. If you loose power, you'll have to reset the clock. You'll also lose your freedom to put the clock anywhere you want.
I guess the clock is just an example of a battery device. You could use it for something else that requires a battery but that isn't in continuous use.
I just raid used battery boxes at work. People tend to throw away all batteries from a device when often it's just one battery that has gone bad or too low.
Clocks like the one shown can run for months on a battery that might be half used. A cheap battery tester will tell me in seconds which batteries still have a decent amount of capacity left.
The same application (converter 5Vcc>1,7Vcc) don't require more than a resistor, capacitor and LED (in this circuit was used as 1,8V zener). With the 1KOhm resistor you can only drive a clock or similar.
Also the 5V supply is DC (see multimeter). In which case you don't need the bridge rectifier.
well then what we should use to "drop" the voltage beside this super easy to follow circuit, sir
you and all those 30 people gave you like should've take the lesson instead of "correcting" the guy.
you know when we don't have access to the fancy transistors or mosfets or whatever we need to build something, sometimes creativity is needed to "replace" what we lack with entirely different function components to achieve the same result as the component we don't have in hand. the goal is to get 1.5 volt from "the only power supply he have", which is 5 volt. it's way much cheaper, it's salavaged from trash.
so, it's not the type of current he needed, it's the voltage value. diodes in general have this thing called "forward voltage" which is droping voltage accross it by half or 1,2 volt.
@@welehweleh-zb6jcthat was my take too. He's building circuits with the components he has available.
It could be adapted to power something that requires 3V DC (two 1.5 V batteries) and a low current, by wiring two LEDs in series.

Casio.

Another great idea Thanks! I have a solar battery and ionistor, it has been working for several years🎉🎉
It is possible to increase the alternative
Yes. I use a rechargeable 3,7 V battery and a resistor . Very simple.
I have no idea what the point of this circuit is. What's the input? Running the clock on an AA battery for a year or 2 seems far simpler!
I just cannabalize USB chargers all day but your solution was ok if you have some extra components laying around = I really like that multimeter. The genuine apple USB chargers have a really nice no noise circuit. The rip off ones.. if you plug something into them, like Samsung USB chargers and many other brands.. you can hear the electromagnetic feedback when you turn on a radio to AM .
You can do the same, using "voltage divider" with only two resistors : 30K and 100K with Input of 5VDC

CHEERS! Mr. Zafer Yildiz
Too Many people negative comments that do not understand what this video is. This is a video that shows how to replace a battery in general. Nothing more. Nothing less. Its a project if you wanted to use a constant power supply
Low current applications only. A voltage regulator added to the circuit replacing the resistor which doesn't regulate voltage, but limits current. Not a circuit I would build.
Zafer bey birde çıkışları osilaskopta görsek güzel olurdu. Kolay gelsin.
Honestly you could just jump the battery terminals out to the clock with a solar light. Use the charged battery to run the clock. No need for anything extra. And it will save power.
look, there's a million things one could do. That's what's so cool about electronic circuits .
Still would need a capacitor to smooth out the pulsing voltage from the garden light, they _look_ steady but that's a persistence of vision thing that tricks our brain into thinking it's always on. The pulsing voltage may cause the clock to run slower, also the peak voltage to the garden light LED can be around 2.7 - 3 volts

@@pawellok W Polsce ponad 15 lat temu też kupiłem ładowarkę do podładowywania ogniw alkalicznych - w czasach gdy jeszcze królowały akumulatorki Ni-Cd. Ładowarka miała diagnostykę i nie dopuszczała do ładowania zbyt rozładowanych bateryjek.

The voltage that will occur on a diode is 0.6 volts. LEDs work with 2 or 3 volts. If you use appropriate resistors instead of diodes, you will be successful. .

Was the power supply damaged? Looking at the board it appear be a good quality ATX PSU, I'd use a working PSU to substitute batteries, using it's components to other circuit is only a deal if it's damaged and there's no fix, because the amount and quality of energy submitted by a PSU is so high. I'd never take of components of a still working PSU. For example, a PSU can be causing BSOD on PC, but it's still working, we can change the capacitors, and the quality of power is good again, if the PC have now a newer PSU, we can use the older fixed to power other circuits like raspberry pi, motors, LEDs and whatever, but is better use components of a not working without fix available board to do the voltage regulator.

An even better solution is a solar panel and a rechargeable cell.
Constantly putting 1.7 volts across a 1.5 volt primary or secondary (rechargeable) battery will cause it to fail unless, you block it with a diode. For emergency running, a relay is the best answer.

I’ve built Bluetooth speakers and arduino projects etc. model train layouts. Step down voltage circuits. Speaker boxes, amplifiers. All sorts of things. But this simple walk clock is driving me crazy. Maybe I just need a 1.5volt lithium cell.
If you have to rotate the battery then you have a problem of dirty or corroding contacts. Clean them, and keep them dry.
@@occamraiser You are correct, even slightly corroded contacts or a loose spring will drop the voltage.
Rechargeable batteries are a waste of time since both the voltage and watt/hour capacity is lower than a primary alkaline cell.
If the mechanism is worn, it may also need replacing, they are dirt cheap and will solve the whole problem.
What´s annoying about changing a AA cell every couple of months? I´d rather change the clock instead of wasting much more money on the power loss of a contraption like the one shown. I´m not worried about the milliwatt or less burned by the clock. What worries me is the energy lost in a "cheap" mains power supply.
