Hi Henry, my Stag is an auto but I too needed to access it and had to remove the two exhaust pipes, in the process all but two of the exhaust manifold to down pipe studs sheared off levei with the exhaust collar. I ended up taking the cast manifolds off and drilling them out on the bench so think yourself lucky yours have come off in tact. Also my exhaust wouldn't move just like like yours with the remains of the studs holding it in place so I ended up removing the whole exhaust system starting at the rear and pulling everything off rearwards, nightmare! As Chris says loosening the engine mounts may help but the engine/bellhousing is very close to the bulk head but could still be enough to give you that wiggle room, good luck Henry looking forward to the next episode.

Hi Henry, thanks for showing the video in great detail. I feel your pain, sort of. One idea: are you able to slacken the engine on it's mounts and hold with a trolley jack? This might give you enough wiggle room to put pressure on the front exhaust joints to allow is to move. I wish you every continued success moving on.

Hi Chris, that is a nice idea. I'm also thinking about cutting a chisel down to a wedge length and seeing if I can then tap that between the flanges. Along with the engine being supported, it might help

@@HenrysGarage Great stuff Henry, it just goes to show what lengths previous owners have gone to, to secure a tight system. Perhaps the joins have exhaust cement in them, although it looked a neat job. I had similar issues getting my centre box off the TR7, what with it being partially welded!!

Thank you for an excellent video, just wish I watched it before I started removing gearbox. I am currently between your pt 1 and pt2!! I am also missing the gear-lever spring etc... Off to find my crowbar

Thanks Steve, I think the removal video was slightly more comprehensive than the reinstall. My arms weee torn to threads trying to get the belhousing connected to the engine. Get extensions for your racket sockets because you’ll need them for to top bolts. A second pi of hands will also help to get them started

Hi Henry... a monster of a project. I remember swapping gearboxes on cortinas when I was a kid and how chewy a job it was. The Stag looks 20 times more stubborn. This will be a great series finding out how you get on.

Thanks Anthony, but you are assuming I managed to get the exhaust off! Wouldn't that be aweful if I'm stuck here

@Henry's Garage you'll get there Henry... escalating brute force through pure frustration normally wins the day

Hi Henry, Not an easy one! The exhaust has too many fixed points, two of which face in opposite directions so it will never move.
Looking at how the system is designed I think you need to loosen all those clamps around the silencers and take the downpipes off individually. That crossover pipe has a clamp on it so you should be able to disconnect it there as well to get more movement. Have you definitely removed all the brackets that connect the system to the body?
Once you can get all the pieces moving individually it should come apart easier.
Looking forward to the next episode.

Thanks Carsten, it did come off in the end. Patience and time were needed to work it free
