The Helix Nebula Using the Optolong L-Ultimate Filter

- With one clear night available, I set my target as the Helix Nebula using the Optolong L-Ultimate filter. The results were amazing. It’s been a while since I was able to open the telescope due to another extended period of dismal weather here at the Heavenly Backyard garden, but this one night proved fruitful.

Helix Nebula "The Eye of God!" is my favorite nebula. Thanks for doing this! Very cool!
It's a good one, if you can get to it in the sky. The way I figure, within about 2 years, those blankety blankety trees will have grown enough to block my view. I might need to rent a silent chain saw and go on a midnight outing. HA

Those poinsettias are a bit more red today. I might need to cover them with a sheet Thursday night as we might get some frost ... our first of the season.
Fantastic capture Pat! The Helix is so low for me I’d have to setup outside my observatory to get any decent time on it.

We are both at nearly the same latitude ... I'm right at 32 N. At least you don't have trees to contend with ... bears, yes, but no trees.

Hey Pat - Considering how low this target is for you you got a good result and managed to bring out some of that Brow section too. Yes indeed we get it nice and high here. Clear skies. :)

I figure at the rate those trees are growing, unless I buy a (slient) chain saw soon and go on a midnight adventure, I will not be able to see it within two years.

Awesome video Pat and a fantastic image of the Helix, especially given how low it is in the sky for you "north polars" 🤣. Down here in NZ it gets to 74 degrees so we get tons of time for imaging. I share you're pain when it comes to the weather - nothing but clouds and rain and thunderstorms forecast down here for the next 8 to 10 days. I don't think Ollie is doing any better over the ditch in OZ when it comes to the weather. Hey, you're a weather guy, can't you fix it!? 👍. Mmmmmmm those beans are looking mighty tasty by the way.

So you got it bad too, weatherwise. I just got a comment from Belgium where it's been clouldy there for weeks. I just surveyed the beans ... bojt green bush beans and wax beans. If you ever had fresh wax beans, you will always want them.

Yes, it is barely visible here at 32N ... no way at your latitude. I hope you are getting some clear weather. I still have LOTS of clouds streaming overhead. I might be able to see some stars by Sunday (Nov 27)
@@HeavenlyBackyardAstronomy I'm not holding my breath, 100% cloud cover and snow all week. I guess I will have to work on some tutorials :)
Pat to see NGC 1579 in Stellarium you have to hit the DSS ( digital sky survey) button next to the telescope button to switch between what mount you are using ..

@@HeavenlyBackyardAstronomy I ment it asks you if you are using an equatorial or atl az , glad you found it but it slows the program down a lot

Today we saw some snow sticking around until the temp went over the freezing mark again. Snow is inevitable
here in southern Ontario and can’t complain about the gorgeous fall weather we recently had.

Hello Westlake ... I just watch Trevor's Backyard Astronomy's video and he was out cutting the grass there in Ontario ... in November! Sure I do it here in Savannah, but Ontario? I am sure the cooler air is rather welcomed there. I hope your skies are clear there with the cool dry air. Makes for great seeing conditions.
Beautiful image Pat, great job processing. Well you are not the only one with bad weather, here in Belgium I just got one night of clear sky over a period of 30 days, and it even wasn't a complete night. at the morning hours (about 4am) fog rolled in and the images weren't usable

Thank you, "ghrvjdev". I live near the coast of SE Georgia. Looking to the SE through the SW is nothing but marsh and ocean (about 7 miles away). to the NW through the NE is Savannah. I can see the milky way on clear summer nights so I lable my Bortle rating about 4.5
@@HeavenlyBackyardAstronomy I see you’re really lucky, I live under Bortle 7 skies in central California, in Fresno, so it took you one single five minute exposure undler Bortle 4.5 🤔 with the Optolong L-Ultimate to get a decent image. You see I have a redcat 51, the Orion G26 color, I’m still planning to get the star adventurer gti once I save up enough. I’m trying to do what you’re doing with the Helix Nebula, you’re lucky Pat, because even though you have a few tree branches but you still have plenty of sky on the south. My situation is a bit more complicated, a large tree is covering all of the sky southwest, and my apartment is covering all of the sky southeast, so the only view of the sky I have is south. I only have like 10 minutes of exposure time every night, for any deep sky object in the south to appear and disappear from my field of view from my apartment balcony. You’re really lucky Pat you live in a great area.
Would love to know your opinion on the stellalyra ten inch dobsonian scope as I’m thinking of getting one.great channel✌️

I have no experience with dobsonian scopes. From What I hear thogh, it is quite good. I would think it would not be the best scope for astrophotography but great for visual observations.

Speaking of Nebulae, how is the SN2022hrs doing? I haven't heard of that Supernova in a while. Is it still destroying things or has it calmed down? I would be surprised to see what's left of the galaxy because of its massive explosion.
Hi Tim,
I haven't heard anything about SN2022hrs. It won't be visible for me until the end of Decmeber, with better positioning January through April. Once I can get a view of it, I will take a peek.
