  • Straight outta Chengdu, China, the Higher Brothers are making Sichuan hip-hop a global sensation. It all started when the four friends spent a winter holed up in a tiny bedroom writing songs about their beloved childhood cartoon, “Haier Brothers.” The guys began to mix trap beats with local dialects, Mandarin and broken English to create a singular style-one that caught the attention of New York-based music label, 88Rising. In this Great Big Film, we kick it inside the studio where “Brothers” Masiwei, Psy.P, Dzknow and Melo make music that’s impressed the likes of Migos and Playboi Carti.

    Their understanding and respect in hiphop and their humbleness and recognizing of their role in the game and as artists was so appreciated... I support these dudes forreal... They seem like good people.... And for the record it seems like there are more comments about how they ARENT appropriating then how they are... But hiphop could always tell the real from the fake, hence why the beastie boys, Eminem, 3rd bass, Mac Miller etc neverrrrrrr caught the level of shit that Iggy Azealia and Macklemore caught... Cause you can tell when someone lives and breathes the culture and when they don't... It's all love here honestly... Hiphop has always been wayyy more diverse then people make it out to be

Hip-hop is a lifestyle, and just like you said, you can tell when people live and breathe it and when they’re fakes

    the awkward moment when people are screaming cultural appropriation when BLACK rappers actually enjoyed it and were not offended.... the disconnect is real. What next? The Beatles and Elvis were cultural appropriators because rock drew heavily from jazz and blues?

    • @Thecor13
      @Thecor13 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      badum dadum the only cultrual appropriators are the mileys and the biebers.

    • @Simmexoxo
      @Simmexoxo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Many artists like Elvis were actually appropriators because they stole music and songs from black artists in the 30s-60s without giving them credit. Many songs that were famous by white artists at that time came from lesser known black groups and solo artists. A simple music history class can tell you that. The Higher Brothers aren’t appropriating because they are influenced by Hip Hop by also infusing their own culture and aesthetic without ripping anyone off without credit.

    • @doggyninja
      @doggyninja 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Where did you take your "simple music history class"? I would suggest getting a refund and sue them for your wasted time. Rock&Roll didn't come from nothing, it drew heavily from jazz and blues which were predominantly black, but it also drew strong influence from country, boogie, and swing which was predominantly white. Get your facts straight. Tis sad when you make up fluff.
      (see below for citation and more joyful sass)
      Presley would nevertheless publicly cite his debt to African American music, pointing to artists such as B. B. King, Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup, Ivory Joe Hunter, and Fats Domino ( Peter Guralnick (2008) Last Train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley, Paw Prints, p. 248, ISBN 1439508623.)

    I love the way these kids manages to distill the pure essence of hip hop in an otherwise conservative and traditional culture. It's easy to see why: they were influenced by 90's hip hop pioneers (ie Pete Rock) who placed self-expressionism and social awareness as the gold standard. I hate the way hip hop in mainstream Western culture has morphed into this consumer-heavy, self-stroking ego fest that's prevalent among popular 'mumble rappers' today.
    For those crying 'cultural appropriation', you're completely oblivious as to why hip hop was created and spread in the first place: to serve as a medium for young people to express their suppressed emotions and bring awareness to their struggles in their environment. These kids are utilizing hip hop exactly as was originally intended. They have nothing but love and passion for the art and in my opinion, it's damn refreshing. I hope their music continues to bring about an emotional revolution among Chinese youth who are undoubtedly drowning in societal expectations and insane standards.

    This has given me a lot of insight into these guys. I had always thought that they were just some dumb run-of-the-mill noisy hypebeast Chinese guys, even with their musical talents, but this video shows a lot of their character which isn't always visible from the English interviews, and they seem like decent people.

    • @shengcheng7562
      @shengcheng7562 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      CZZ 123 China need more people like that, honestly. There’s so many people in China that have so much talent, but most of them wasted their talent because they don’t believe they’ll be successful. Just like the soccer in China, China has spent so much money on Soccer, but still Chinese soccer team is one of the worse team in the world, even American Soccer is better than them lol. China should definitely just let their youth fly, sky is the limit

    • @davidb5205

      Literally no one RELEVANT has ever said that only black people can do Hip-Hop. Eminem is well-respected by his peers. Even further back, you have the Beastie Boys. It's a non-issue.

      Untitled That's the dumbest Nazi thing l've heard! Music has no race and is universal. I don't see people criticising African American choirs even though choirs aren't from Africa. It's not appropriation, its appreciation so its not racism. Talent belongs to no race. Sorry this was what was meant to be said

    • @bananaman2694
      @bananaman2694 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Untitled How? Tell me how it is racist. Eminem and Logic are doing rap and they are ADORED in the rap community. I can only understand if some person said the n word and they are not even black, but both Eminem, Logic, and even the higher brothers don’t even say the n word.

    'what a great doc on the higher brothers. I genuinely like their music. The cultural appreciation argument comes from a place of stupidity and jealousy. Looking to blame others for their misfortune. It seems China is a very conservative and restricting place. It seems Rap was a way out so to speak for them and you can see it. This is great for their country.
