    I sent the DJI Mic 2 back today. Apart from the fact a lot of my lav mics don't work with it and it sometimes has odd distortion, I felt I just don't need it and I'd rather use the $350 on some good craft beer.

    Be careful, the DJI fanboys might come after you! I had pre-ordered the DM2 and then canceled when I heard comparisons to the Rode Pro and thought it didn't sound as good. Call me crazy, but first and foremost a mic should be judged on sound quality and not all the ancillary features. On some other reviewer videos I had mentioned that I canceled the order and was going to stay with the Rode Pro and some people got all up in arms over that "It's 32 bit, sound quality doesn't matter when you can just eq it later and make it sound good and then you get all the features!" or.... and hear me out.... maybe I will just stay with a mic that I prefer the sound quality if because that is the #1 feature I care about. It's like some people just don't like how I chose to spend (or not spend!) my money.
    Never tried Hollyland, but I bought the Lark Max as a gift for my brother and he loved it. He might even like the M2 even more.

    • @PhillipSkraba
      @PhillipSkraba  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      The Hollyland sounds fantastic, I think even DJI has to admit to that. The Rode Pro sounds incredible, used it a couple of times and it's superb. I'm not too bothered about the fan boys, I'm mean I'm a DJI drone fan boy but I'll tell them if they F up somewhere, like they did with the DJI Mic 2. They developed features before audio, which I think is a mistake. The whole point of a mic system is audio. 32-bit float is a cool safety net, but not one I actually ever use, though it could be beneficial in some use case scenarios.

    • @kneepayne
      @kneepayne 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@PhillipSkraba "They developed features before audio, which I think is a mistake" this is the best summary of the DM2. I love DJI in general. Had a few of their drones and gimbals, and even the first DJI mic, and was really pleased. I guess my history with DJI made me set a really high bar for the DM2 because I know they are capable of delivering solid products.

    • @PhillipSkraba
      @PhillipSkraba  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@kneepayne I am big fan of DJI too, and I enjoy using their gimbals and drones, but they really should have put more effort into sound quality for the Mic 2, it's a shame really. The Lark M2, that seems like audio first.

    • @kneepayne
      @kneepayne 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@PhillipSkraba following up here. It turns out the sound quality issue was because by default there is a lo-cut filter enabled. I watched some other reviewers who initially butchered the DM2 in reviews retract their statements when testing it again with the filter turned off and it sounded much better.
      With that said, DJI needs to make matte covers for the mics. There is no good functional reason why a lav mic should be that distracting. I had the same issue with Rode but did find some matte covers which made a big difference in the visual aesthetics.

    When you say you can't use a lot of lav mics with the DJI, are you referring to the fact that the input type doesn't allow you to use more expensive lav mics that typically use some type of pin layout for input, or that the standard jack doesn't receive input from other cheap standard headphone jack input?

    My issue with these products is they are rechargeable batteries wrapped with audio electronics, so they have a shelf life. The Lark M2 is small but this means the battery could last even less.
    I currently work with 2 rode filmaker kits and have a sarmonic 2 chanel reciever on my camera, its clunky but it works just fine.

    • @PhillipSkraba
      @PhillipSkraba  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Well, I don't think size makes much of a difference when it comes to quality of battery, so I'm not worried about that. My Hollyland Lark 150 or whatever the hell it's called is dead, so that does make me fear if they've put better batteries into the Lark M2. Right now it's a superb system, and IF they make the Lark M3 with bluetooth, and a 3.5mm jack, add 32-bit float, it will dominate. The sound is great. The Rode kits are by far the best, you can't compete with them.

    Good video. I have the Lark M2 and it's great for use with a camera, mobile phone, and even with my MacBook Pro. It's a bit of an apples to oranges comparison with the DJI Mic 2. DJI Mic 2 customers may be more demanding for onboard recording and the ability to split the two transmitters into two channels even when recording via mobile phone. You can only do that with the Lark M2 when recording to camera via the camera receiver.

    • @coleplacemb
      @coleplacemb 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I've read you can use cable adapters to connect the camera receiver to an iPhone which allows for 2-channel recording. Basically, with an iPhone you do the following:
      iPhone -> Lightning port adapter -> TRS to TRRS cable -> Camera Version RX (Hollyland M2 receiver with the volume control knob).
      I haven't tried this myself, but others have noted that this works with the Lark M2 and an iPhone.
      Oh, and I think there is a setting on the camera receiver to choose between stereo and mono. I have no idea which one of those needs to be selected to enable 2-channel recording.
