    Each of my school age kids has a binder with their name on it, and I use printable blank planner pages to lay out their work for the week. I bought the printable planner from Confessions of a Homeschooler 6 years ago and we're still using it daily. Love it.

    For some years now I have been mildly curious about what homeschooling looks like. This video gave me a wonderful view of this subject. I think it is so great that you are including Bible reading. Kids need to learn about God's love, mercy, and blessings.

    Hello !!! I use a planner and My son (grade 3) uses a weekly printable planner that has little boxes that he can check off as he finishes his work helps with being independent. Now my Littles ones 5 and 4 they have a printed schedule above their work boxes that are colour coded so they know what comes next. Love planning !!!

    We do a whole mix of planners and notebooks depending on what I feel like. I haven't settled on one thing or another. The past 2 weeks I just write the date when we start and then as we go I write what we did.

    • @HeatherTorresTV
      @HeatherTorresTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Love it! The easier the better. In my mind I want to be the pinterest speadsheet cute binders and planner mom but in reality I just keep it super simple and we don't make a huge fuss over it.

    • @Tanya_loudestgarden
      @Tanya_loudestgarden 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I would love pretty little planners that I've personalized for each of us but then reality hits like a giant pile of forgotten laundry and I'm scribbling in a dollar tree notebook haha

    • @HeatherTorresTV
      @HeatherTorresTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      YES! You nailed it! It's thanksgiving next week and I'm just now planning what we are going to learn. To say it was an afterthought is an understatement. Keeping it simple.... that's the hard part.

    • @Tanya_loudestgarden
      @Tanya_loudestgarden 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha I am giving my kids the week off because I didn't plan anything lol I'm so bad. I do have one craft I picked up at dollar tree. It's a little glue together foam turkey. I'm trying to think of a good service project. Mine are on the young side so it might just be doing some baking for a neighbor this year.

    thanks for sharing Heather! I don't plan. ahhh. at least not in these young ages. we just have a list of what subjects need to be accomplished for the day. it works for now. we just go on our own pace.

      Truth be told..... once I figured out I could put the books on hold and NOT have to search for all of them myself I was sooooooo happy! Now the library is my go to place and I'm saving a ton of money because I'm not having to purchase them on Amazon to save time. :)

    Such a cool homeschool mommy, I currently homeschool 4 children 10th, 8th, 2nd and Kindergarten. I do Abeka with all 4 and love how free your homeschool is!!! I'm thinking of branching out with the little ones and letting the big ones continue any suggestions??

    • @HeatherTorresTV
      @HeatherTorresTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Welcome. My suggestion for the little ones is to really focus on the essentials. Reading, writing, and math and then let them be exposed to what the olders are learning in a group setting but allowing them to dive deep into those three areas. Have you read the book The Three R's?

  • @juanitaarbelo5409
    @juanitaarbelo5409 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I do exactly what you do. I buy two planners (one for my daughter & one for my son) at the dollar store. I also write what needs to get done for the day and make those same squares for them to check off what they did. They like it so since it's working, it stays...lol TFS!

    It's so hard to show a mess and have it truly show that it's a mess because it still looks clean to me!! But I get it. I try to take pics of the mess to show what 'real' homeschooling looks like and it never translates well. It was nice to see your KG schedule and how it differs from our own. Thanks for taking the time to document your day!

    I love the extra handwriting with the gratitude journal. I'm new to homeschool with my 5-year-old and already our least favorite thing to do is handwriting. Maybe I can sneak it in that way... :)

    • @HeatherTorresTV
      @HeatherTorresTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      We were in the same boat with my little guy. Don't force it. Let her creativity be there in word form and you write it out for her. Then maybe once a week ask her to choose ONE word you wrote down for her to copy. Writing is not actually something kiddos should be doing this young unless they have the passion for it. Pushing writing too early can actually hinder the creativity because they are too focused on getting it right. :)

      Heather Torres I needed to hear that! I know in my heart that one of the beauties of homeschooling is being able to NOT push things...yet somehow that seems like the best idea sometimes. 🙄

    Loved this video. We use paper style planners as well. I plan out about 1-2 weeks at a time, in pencil of course, because life happens! My boys just check off as they go through their days. Right now I'm trying to plan us through Christmas break when Big brother comes home from college and we take about 3-4 weeks off to be together as a family. I loved taking a peek into your day. Thank you.

    Since we have 2 more little ones (3 and 1) aside from our homeschooler, we divide the subjects among my wife and I. Basically, she does science, math, bible and arts in the morning (divided into different days, of course!) and after arriving form work, I do computer, social studies, english and some lessons in the morning that they cannot finish. We usually plan for a weeks lessons, and we follow a set of schedule that my wife created.

    Ha, just got done reading the Action of Subtraction to my kiddos for a bedtime story :) My planner looks a lot like yours (and so does my homeschooling, er, dining room), too! I have been writing the weeks lessons in my planner every Sunday (only homeschooling one of our 3 kiddos currently). I've had my daughter's weekly lessons list on a clipboard, for her to check off with a dry erase marker, but she really isn't using it :( I think I'm going to switch it up and put it in a planner (that I already have) for her and see if she can be more in control of her day. Great video!

    I'm studying translation and interpretation in Germany and I've grown up here, too. Since we discuss the difference between the culture, school systems, politics, etc I was quite curious how homeschooling really works.
    Note: Our school system is indeed quite different from school in the US. There are some different types such as Montessori or Waldorf education but they certainly are far from common practice; those types are mostly private schools. Other tradtional-style private schools exist but are either catholic/protestant schools or exceptions. Homeschooling as such is, to my knowledge, forbidden. Therefore, most kids attend public schools and more and more attend college/university (which are public and this does not mean that they're bad - it's the opposite, actually) where they only have to pay a small semester contribution. It's not really a fee since this money is used for "free" public transport, administration etc. For those, who do not want to study at all, they can make a good living after doing apprentice ships. Skilled workers are important and appreciated.
    So, thank you, for explaining so well! Your videos really help to get an insight into something that seems rather strange for one coming from a place where this way of teaching simply doesn't exist. :)

    Hi Heather, always great lively vids. 😉. having just started HS'ing (4weeks) I decided on paper planner, but I didn't think to split them up. I may visit that, if the single planner doesn't work. here in Nashville we have abook store Mckays that resales inexpensive books. I worry that time will slip up on me with checked out library books. I did just sign up for a library card though, again (because even cheap books can get expensive😐).

    Heather it looks like your homeschooled day is fun and made simple. I really like your type of homeschooling. I have trouble keeping a planner and forget to record what we do in the day. I really want to have a record of what my kids do in the day. What do you suggest for someone who just can't keep up with a planner system?

    • @HeatherTorresTV
      @HeatherTorresTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for watching! i would suggest doing a "what we do in a week" style. Instead of what do you want to get done in one day, I would decide ahead of time what you hope to accomplish in a week. So for example, for math I would say: lessons 13-16. Then at the end of the week sit down and check that off if you completed it or move it to the next week if it wasn't all done. You should always have a goal of completion.

    this is my first year homeschooling. I feel like the homeschool day is taking so long. it takes my daughter 2nd/3rd grade so long to complete things. I haven't found a routine for my son who just turned 5 either. Other than working on learning some letter identification and practice, and some pre-k math work, I haven't done anything too structured for him yet. I have puzzles, magnet blocks, stamps, coloring books, all kinds of activities for him to do, but it doesn't keep him busy, and therefore there are tons of interruptions. Hence our school day taking upwards of 5 or 6 hours lately.I Need tips

      Heather Torres I really like the charlotte Mason style, we joined classical conversations in the fall, I guess somewhere between your style and traditional, we live in the country, lots of nature we love just being outside , I am surrounded my family and lots of friends who are school teachers! so I love the laid back approach of Charlotte Mason, I just don't want to overwhelm him, but definitely not under deliver, I have talked to alot of great homeschooling moms who all are different and have different ways, I think that may be the problem! God is going to be my Guide! I have subscribed to you and Grace and Grit, but I love how your homeschool groove is, I just read the unhurried homeschooler which has been amazing! probably best homeschooling book I have read so far, with have a 4 year old and 6 week old boys plus my first grader, I just don't want to be overwhelmed by homeschooling, I know God has given me a call to homeschool, I don't want to get in the way!!

I'm a new homeschool mom, my kid is going to be kindergarten this fall and I'm really overwhelmed... you seem to have it all together, do you have any tips on how to make this fun and educational? also, I noticed your bible part of the video... is that catholic or simply a Christian based?

      Hi and welcome to the homeschool journey! Oh I do not have it all together! :) I just really value the time we are spending together and to me that matters more than finishing every single math problem on the list - if that makes sense. I also LIVE by my calendar! haha. You got this! :) To make it fun I try and forget about what "school" is and just really focus on making sure they are learning. Our bible is Christian. :)

      Hi! For science we are using Exploring Nature with Children and for social studies we were doing A Story of the World but now we have transitioned into all living books through a time period.

    i do want to know how I can make my 4 years old son sit down with me and learn with me together. Sometimes I feel that I'm not a good mother...:( he doesn't want to sit beside me and learn anything I planned for him... I don't know what the problem is. Yes, he's just 4 years old and he's a boy and especially he's now in his sensitive and active period... it's not that easy for me to discipline him. Then I feel very failed as a mother😓. I understand that each kid is different... but I still would like to ask you to give me some advices or tell me about your experiences on it. Thank you!

      @HeatherTorresTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You got this! :) I would start with teaching him through BIG movement then and do smaller learning lessons at meal times (when he is already sitting!)

      Heather Torres thank you for your reply! You mean, i just follow his way or his style to teach:/? I have tried at the beginning but I found it's very inefficient... I've tried to make him feel interesting on learning with me but it seems he's always more interested in playing something else such as toy cars... 😔

    • @HeatherTorresTV
      @HeatherTorresTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would make toy cars then part of the learning time. If you are doing math -- line them all up and count them. Add a car and take away a car. Put numbers on the ground and have him match piles of cars. Make sense. I would do a TON of reading out loud to him while he is playing cars. Use the things he is interested in and work with that first.

      Heather Torres hihi! Thanks for your advice:)! I see from the video that your son uses left hand to write, my son does the same. Is thee any troubles or problems that you have ever met during his study or your teaching?

    We have a very crazy day to day schedule so to save time. I made a list of all the things I would like us to do on school days printed it and bound it and the boys just highlight what we actually get done. Most of our curriculum is teacher lead so I flip flop between the two. it's looks something like this:
    week: Days in
    day: school
    (I leave this blank for the date and they copy it underneath)
    time with God
    good morning activities
    breakfast /Bible/Bible loop
    prayers
    character traits /virtues
    Enrichment loop
    Memory work/clean up
    alone bible
    handwriting
    grammar
    copywork
    phonics
    spelling
    math
    history
    science
    read to mom/ baggy books
    mom reads aloud
    practice time
    Spanish
    special note: (this is for anything going on outside of school or you space for me to say I love you!)
    and that's it. we get to what we get too, most days we don't get to everything and a few days we almost did, but Spanish just never seems to happen. My boys love jumping while I read or playing with legos and I'm usually tired and ready for rest time. our rest time it's listed here because we usually have it after school is over. And if it take us days one week or 6 days the next week to complete a week I have planned, well at lest we are having forward motion in our learning on step at a time. ideally I want us to be done with most of it before lunch, but sometimes we a dragging or we stayed up late hanging out with dad or reading books, so there's no start time or end time, just get in and learn what we can! and I try ready hard not to let my type A personality get in the way.
